Of course bitcoin, it is the first coin in the world and starts the blockchain 1.0, the 5.0 technical revolution. Thus, i think no one can defeat bitcoin nowadays. Every alcoins depends on the bitcoin trend.
Altcoins cant surpass bitcoin as long it is use on the market. any use on cryptocurrency like on buying altcoins bitcoin is always the way to buy between altcoins. you must buy bitcoin/etherium before you can buy any alternative coins thats why if your hoping that alcoin will surpass bitcoin maybe its imposible. most of the time there are directly use of bitcoin that altcoins can do so for less hassle your option is to use bitcoin if they have the same use on the market right?
as you mentioned, in this case ethereum is the best candidate because it already has a conversion partner with the widespread use of smart contracts, it seems it needs more time to convince many investors, but some altcoins look ready to be successors, another altcoin with real stability is Tether, this coin is also able to make a sense of comfort for price stability on the market.
My opinion, bitcoin as the first crypto currency, will always dominate the altcoyins. There are many reasons for this.
Of course bitcoin! bitcoin has more than 50% of the marketcap in cryptocurrency, from that we know how bitcoin's influence and control on the crypto market and until the next few years I still believe that bitcoin will still continue to dominate, maybe until bitcoin becomes obsolete

I appreciate your opinion, but in my opinion bitcoin still has a strong influence on the crypto market, although it is true today many altcoins are emerging and promising attractive benefits, but I believe that will not be long, altcoin is not necessarily consistent with what they offer for a long time different from bitcoin which has proven that he can survive until now
For now bitcoin still dominate the market, and I guess it still takes control over all cryptocurrencies. However we don't know exactly when it can survive. It could be someday there will be another coin which takes control the market. Just not sure when.

Bitcoin is the leading coin of all crypto currency's, no matter how long the price deflations of bitcoin...still bitcoin controls the market capasity. Yes we see and observed that their are altcoin has potentially increasing it's price value but it can not over take the price value of bitcoin.
Well, cryptocurrency market is usually controlled by bitcoin, but i don't bitcoin controls the market all the time. Looking at the market right now we can say bitcoin is a bit in control of the market.

Looks like it is bitcoin who is in control of the market and that too very firmly. Day by day bitcoin dominance is on a rise. recently it crossed more than 50% and now it looks like it is going to increase only. on the other hand alts have suffered badly due to this. They have lost a lot of market share and seems their recovery will now take more time. Bitcoin it seems will go for a bull run anytime.

In my opinion, Now I see the price movement of bitcoin is very slow, actually there are some coins that I see price movements start fast. One of them is the altcoin, for that I predict that there is a possibility in the future that altcoins will be able to control the market and beat bitcoin.
Until now bitcoin still controls the market, but I am not sure that bitcoin will forever control the market.
