I think that ICO thing is stretching out the ability of bitcoin as a cryptocurrency. And I think this will help bitcoin to promote itself in the whole world.

The assumption that bitcoin holders sell off their bitcoins to join ICO is false. It does not necessary mean that getting into ICO is selling a traders bitcoins. It can be a holder of bitcoin will invest his fiat direct by purchasing new bitcoin for ICO which will not affect his initial holding.

I dont think it will actually hurt bitcoin price. Most of the ICOs need BTC to buy and also ultimately it have to be exchanged with BTC. So I think ICO is putting positive impact on bitcoin.

Maybe in the short term in 2017 it resulted in some capital inflow to BTC. But the fallout from countless scams and garbage projects that are resulting in almost zero real economic value is sure to come back as a stain on the reputation of cryptocurrency in general. It's just an absolute dumpster fire out there in the world of ICOs.

the huge amounts of new ICOS that arise every month could be hurting the price of bitcoin? you who think about the ICO?
I don't see how ICOs projects hurts bitcoin price, in fact, with the large increased number of ICO project on ground, I was expecting to see bitcoin price increased base on it high number of demand from investors that want to use it to invest on ICOs projects.
But the reverse is the case.

I don't think ICOs are hurting bitcoin directly. They just create more diversity and competition. Moreover, unlike bitcoin most of ICOs have particular narrow fields of application.

I think that most icos are pretty much junk and I highly doubt they have any impact on bitcoin itself anyways. If anything it is bitcoin affecting the price of icos

This belongs to 'speculation' board: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=57.0

As I wrote in some other thread recently - Yes, ICO can, and likely do have negative impact on BTC price. The mechanism is simple, devs raise funds (in BTC/ETH etc) during the ICO, then they'll have to eventually dump all, or most of it, for fiat money, driving the price down.

But there's more than that. Most of tokens/altcoins have the highest trading volume in BTC pairs. That gives BTC a utility, a practical use which drives the price up.

Similarly, there could be a lot of people who would only buy bitcoins just to be able to participate in ICOs, so - positive effect on the price.

There's no way to make a definite and fair judgement without looking deeper and considering all the factors. Personally, my gut feeling tells me that without altcoins/tokens, Bitcoin wouldn't be where it is right now (price-wise).

ICOs hurt Bitcoin in the sense that they associate Bitcoin itself with all of the various scams and garbage investments thaat ICOs represent. There's probably not much direct impact, but it terms of public relations and the general public's perception of crypto and Bitcoin there's likely a lot of damage.

I'm happy to hear this thread, I think it's interesting that there are a lot of people out there who enjoy ICO investment and I prefer to work as a bounty worker to collect bitcoin in my wallet, I do not sell it to date and buy it when it's really cheap from My personal money, I am also sad many ICO scam cases that spend a lot of investors money and very unfortunate, hoping no further ICO scams in the future

I dont think that new tokens will put impact on the value of Bitcoin that much. There are some already established Altcoins that may effect the price of bitcoin but ICO or new tokens will put minimum effect. Rather it will strengthen the cryptocurrency community and altcoins along with bitcoin will be more popular.
