Bitcoin is the cryptocurrency that will really give you financial freedom, it turns your financial difficulty into good one. Therefore people stored their bitcoin because they firmly believe that bitcoin will rise again just like what happen last year. So I think storing your bitcoin will really benefited you a lot if and only if bitcoin will continue to rise.
They store it into their wallets because they do believe that one day in future btc will be worth much more than it is now and they would become millionaires just the previous holders.
