I've heard a lot about E-gold from the whole list. Thus, it turns out that the creators of bitcoin have collected in their project all the best from previous developments and research from around the world. I think that the creators of bitcoin did not initially count on such popularity of cryptocurrencies all over the world, bitcoin was supposed to become a test cryptocurrency. Particularly surprising are the articles published before 1990, when everything was so poorly developed, while such discoveries were made for the digital world. One of the few really worth reading threads.

12 years since the publication of the White Paper

Fri Oct 31 14:10:00 EDT 2008
Bitcoin P2P e-cash paper
Quote
I've been working on a new electronic cash system that's fully
peer-to-peer, with no trusted third party.

The paper is available at:
http://www.bitcoin.org/bitcoin.pdf

The main properties:
 Double-spending is prevented with a peer-to-peer network.
No mint or other trusted parties.
 Participants can be anonymous.
New coins are made from Hashcash style proof-of-work.
The proof-of-work for new coin generation also powers the
    network to prevent double-spending.

Bitcoin: A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System

Abstract.  A purely peer-to-peer version of electronic cash would
allow online payments to be sent directly from one party to another
without the burdens of going through a financial institution.
Digital signatures provide part of the solution, but the main
benefits are lost if a trusted party is still required to prevent
double-spending.  We propose a solution to the double-spending
problem using a peer-to-peer network.  The network timestamps
transactions by hashing them into an ongoing chain of hash-based
proof-of-work, forming a record that cannot be changed without
redoing the proof-of-work.  The longest chain not only serves as
proof of the sequence of events witnessed, but proof that it came
from the largest pool of CPU power.  As long as honest nodes control
the most CPU power on the network, they can generate the longest
chain and outpace any attackers.  The network itself requires
minimal structure.  Messages are broadcasted on a best effort basis,
and nodes can leave and rejoin the network at will, accepting the
longest proof-of-work chain as proof of what happened while they
were gone.

If you have the opportunity to get 1 Bitcoin, you are very lucky, many will not get it.
That's undoubtedly true but who knows what the ownership distribution is going to look like in a decade or two.  Right now I think there are a few people who own a lot of bitcoin, like the Winklevoss twins and some of the OGs from back in the day.

Anyway, speaking of bitcoin history (not prehistory, though), I'm reading Digital Gold by Nathaniel Popper on the suggestion of gentlemand and I'm glad I picked it up on Amazon.  I got into bitcoin relatively late and never really got to know who the big names are/were, and the book is doing a great job so far taking me through bitcoin's very early days (I'm only a few chapters in).  Not surprisingly, mention of bitcointalk started very early in the book but I was pleased to see that anyway.  If anyone hasn't read Digital Gold and is looking for a well-written journalistic account of bitcoin's history, you should check it out.

Sometimes I've seen names mentioned over and over here, but often that just leaves me scratching my head wondering who these people are--like Hal Finney and bitcointalk's own sirius.  It's very nice the book covers stuff like that, else I probably would have remained too lazy to ever figure it out.

If you've read about bitcoin in the press and have some familiarity with academic research in the field of cryptography, you might reasonably come away with the following impression: Several decades' worth of research on digital cash, beginning with David Chaum,10,12 did not lead to commercial success because it required a centralized, banklike server controlling the system, and no banks wanted to sign on. Along came bitcoin, a radically different proposal for a decentralized cryptocurrency that didn't need the banks, and digital cash finally succeeded. Its inventor, the mysterious Satoshi Nakamoto, was an academic outsider, and bitcoin bears no resemblance to earlier academic proposals.

This article challenges that view by showing that nearly all of the technical components of bitcoin originated in the academic literature of the 1980s and '90s (see figure 1). This is not to diminish Nakamoto's achievement but to point out that he stood on the shoulders of giants. Indeed, by tracing the origins of the ideas in bitcoin, we can zero in on Nakamoto's true leap of insight—the specific, complex way in which the underlying components are put together. This helps explain why bitcoin took so long to be invented. Readers already familiar with how bitcoin works may gain a deeper understanding from this historical presentation. (For an introduction, see Bitcoin and Cryptocurrency Technologies by Arvind Narayanan et al.36) Bitcoin's intellectual history also serves as a case study demonstrating the relationships among academia, outside researchers, and practitioners, and offers lessons on how these groups can benefit from one another.

How did Bitcoin improve? Technological advances are good. The system is striving to increase the size of the block. Bitcoin performs the value transfer function. What about the Bitcoin philosophy? Does it offer a better system than the current economy? Further studies are needed to assess them.

Yesterday, gmaxwell published a thread with excellent information where it highlights some very interesting records to know a little more about the history of Bitcointalk.

[BCT FACT] Bitcointalk was originally on Bitcoin.org but ... drama

Quote
Bitcointalk was originally a forum under www.bitcoin.org/smf/ and then later on a subdomain at forums.bitcoin.org but it isn't anymore.

Here is the 2011 announcement, but it doesn't give the backstory.

It seems like people have been systematically nuking logs of Bitcoin's history off the Internet for whatever reason, so many of you who weren't personally there and involved in 2011 probably have not seen this bit of history.

I'll just let the chat logs tell the story of why it was moved and how it got the name bitcointalk.

https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/bct-fact-bitcointalk-was-originally-on-bitcoinorg-but-drama-5203621

It is a must-read thread if you want to know more about the forum.
That was very informative. They were under a situation where no other good solution was possible. Not Making the bitcoin.org site official had its own reason certainly. Besides, the matter of illegal activities could not be avoided either. That was actually a bit rough and happy to see such topics are no more promoted. At present, it is the best forum for tuning with digital currencies market, specially bitcoin. They wanted development to be a separate organization from forum.
Purpose of the forum is to provide a place for participants of an industry to share thought with each other and get solutions of problems. Development team needs to focus on betterment of a project. Giving both one room will definitely not work. You cannot focus on your work when a lot of groups are talking about different topics. Developers need their own space and separating both was the right thing to do.

This really surprised me and this idea is really great. It combines many theories from ancient to present to create a decentralized trading system and the best security. I now understand why bitcoin is so valuable in the past. It is the quintessential combination of many years and many old projects. Cryptocurrency and Blockchain are really a great value chain, so I believe that the future of the crypto market will grow further and stronger. perhaps now many governments still don't see the strength of our market. Time will prove everything.

Pictures are sometimes worth a helluva lot more than a thousand words. In the past 48 hours ones like this are worth billions. This is Bitcoin’s performance in 2019 overlaid versus the most liquid, most important, single deepest market in the entire world.

The 10-year U.S. Treasury note is the foundation for so much of the global financial system that you cannot deny this relationship has some merit, if not real power.

The deep inversion of the U.S. yield curve is not just about a recession straight ahead. It’s about capital markets that are spooked into what I think is the mother of all defensive trades. And this has all the classic safe-haven asset classes in massive bull markets or just beginning them.

Banks !!!, your business collapses.
The time that 1 satoshi will equals to 1 usd is the right time I am actually waiting for, and that is what I have been accumulating my btc for, I may have missed out of when bitcoin was 1 cent, but I am not going to miss out of this one again.

Dollar is gradually weakening against bitcoin and this is why trump came out recently to defend dollars and condemn bitcoin, but despite the fact that a whole United State president came out to declare interest against bitcoin, bitcoin still did not fall in value. Let us give it another 10 years’ time, I am sure that 1 satoshi will surely equals to 1 dollar, by that time, adoption rate would have been so high and the supply of bitcoin would have been equally limited too if not exhausted already.

Of course, all the merit of Bitcoin belongs to Satoshi Nakamoto, but here we are describing the prehistory of Bitcoin, there are several protocols that are used today and are older than Bitcoin.

You really took your time to write all this? I can't even read up to half of what you have written here cause I don't read much. If we are talking about cryptocurrency and the creation, all these people that you have mentioned here, no one is going to remember them as long as it crypto we are talking about. Everyone has their own field where they will be remembered, if you're talking about cryptocurrency then the only person everyone remembers is Satoshi Nakamoto and no one else. He's the creator of cryptocurrency and that's all we know. Others should only take glory in their own respective fields.

I just realized that Bitcoin was basically moved by several invoices about cypher or cryptography. I have also studied this for a while and yes it is quite difficult for me to continue. And btw, that logo of Bitcoin with stand upright is better than the right-tilted.

Bitcoin wasn't created out of "sudden thoughts" but there was previous tries before bitcoin came to be but that doesn't mean bitcoin took something from them and made it better, it was something totally different with the same idea.

Bitcoin put the emphasis on the decentralized part, all the previous tries didn't had the power of blockchain with them, it was a currency and it was unknown how it would be used but when bitcoin was created it was powered by blockchain which made the big difference between bitcoin and all other previous tries.

So, we can say that the "online money" idea was old as internet itself but the blockchain idea was purely new and that was the difference that made bitcoin super known and used by everyone. I am still thankful that I was around early and got in very early, it changed my life but if I have seen all others previously I would never got into them.

A very good overview of where Bitcoin started and since its a chart for Bitcoin prehistory, maybe you could add in the timeline the origins of cryptography and its evolution over time especially in World War II era where there are serious work being done about it which I guess lays the foundation of modern cryptography which is directly related to Bitcoin. Imho.

The Bitcoin logo:

There is little talk of the Bitcoin logo, I have compiled a bit of information about this.

The first design of the Bitcoin logo was created by satoshi nakamoto with the inscription BC / 2009

satoshi > New icon/logo / Feb-2010

https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/m.21766

bitboy > More Bitcoin logos, buttons, and also some other graphics / Nov-2010

https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/more-bitcoin-logos-buttons-and-also-some-other-graphics-1631

bitboy, interpreted that the Bitcoin logo should be accepted as a brand image and marketing, change of color gold to orange, the inclined symbol, the vertical bars at the ends, is a unique design and very successful for merchandising.

The logo is also part of the Bitcoin story.

As always, I was pleasantly surprised to read 2010/2011 threads, mainly for their comments, content and to see forum members who are still active in Bitcointalk.

So this really started from a long time ago. Really nice to see that someone took out their time to record all these and put them together, so that everyone can be able to see where and how it started. They have been on this since the 70’s and it continued till the last decade and we have got bitcoin from Satoshi who we are yet to know who he is. A lot of people are still confuse at what us the purpose of all this and what bitcoin us really meant for, sometime in the future we will get to know, as for now, it is for a peer-to-peer transaction.

So you can still include in the list William Stanley Jevons

In his 1874 book The Principles of Science, he wrote:

"Can the reader say what two numbers multiplied together will produce the number 8616460799? I think it unlikely that anyone but myself will ever know"

That graph on the dollar is shocking. But do you know what the really amazing thing is? The rest of the world's currencies are doing even worse than the dollar.

At least the dollar started to strengthen in 2016, as a result of interest rates normalising. Everyone else's currency weakened further as a result of zero interest rates and QE. The ECB's base rates are 0.0% and the rate they charge banks for depositing excess reserves at the ECB is -0.4%. And yet banks still deposit excess reserves with the ECB despite losing money. The mind boggles as to what they're thinking.
The USD is actually doing really well considering the economic conditions that are being experienced almost everywhere. The US, despite all the whining that occurs with Trump, has a booming economy in a time where every other country is in the middle of a slump. It's basically a recession for the rest of the world minus the United States, which is probably why it hasn't been called a recession on most of the main media channels yet. I'm not entirely sure how the US is pulling off their economic miracle either since there are multiple trade wars that they're embroiled in. Maybe that's how they do it and it's getting everyone to invest their money into the US' economy. I know that Canada is in a massive slump that feels different from every other since it's been down for years with only slight instances of reprieve. This doesn't feel normal, and I have a feeling it's due to a neutering government which is chopping our economy off at the knees and making it run a 100m sprint.

Regardless, the prehistory for Bitcoin is actually pretty neat. The number of advances and considerations for technology leading up to cryptos truly is mind-boggling.

The functional details are not covered in the paper, but the

People joked about video games currency for years but they have never given them credit for the prebitcoin history before so seeing that here is something amazing. I for one sold one of my game characters and a lot of game money for bitcoin for example, that was the transition process for me, I moved from game currencies and so forth to actually using digital currency and I knew at that moment this has to be the thing I do from now on.

I played games all my life and made a lot of money from them when I was a kid so it was certainly a way for people to make money and spend money as well but it was not seen as a currency and not taken seriously, with the invention of bitcoin those in game currencies actually had a reason to be relative to the topic but never really mentioned until this post.

^

This Vikipedia Virtual Economy link is a good description of what you are saying?
If so, I would include it in the list.

(2001 Video Game currencies and markets, (era started in 2001))

Thx.

Quote
In 2001, EverQuest players Brock Pierce and Alan Debonneville founded Internet Gaming Entertainment Ltd (IGE), a company that offered not only the virtual commodities in exchange for real money but also provided professional customer service. IGE had a trained staff that would handle financial issues, customer inquiries and technical support to ensure that gamers are satisfied with each real money purchase. It also took advantage of the global reach of synthetic worlds by setting up a shop in Hong Kong where a small army of technically savvy but low wage workers could field orders, load up avatars, retrieve store goods and deliver them wherever necessary.[3][4] This lucrative market has opened a whole new type of economy where the border between the real and the virtual is obscure.[5]

This post is taking too long to do it. For sure OP made some time to do this post. Anyway, technology always develop over a period of time like to what we have now. We are entering more complicated digital era where almost platform are using AI to interact with users. This is the best so.far but who knows that this kind of intelligent will be integrated in every system especially if it will found out that AI is more time saving and more comfortable for the users to use.

BITCOIN is one of the best technology also so far and being implemented right now.

All this amount of printed fiduciary money will never be returned, the debt is the inheritance that we will leave to our children, grandchildren and the next generations.

Decentralization welcome, thx, BTC

That is exactly right. And just this week ECB has announced they will keep printing more debt.

Not only is this debt left for future generations, it is also never going to get paid. So if you print debt and it just keeps getting rolled over forever, you've essentially just printed free money for banks.

Did you get free money? Did your lemonade stand? No. But banks did.

We're getting hoodwinked systematically.

Wow, even in the year 1973, cryptosphere already exist where in fact it is not yet the time for digital era. Maybe those people who foreseen the revolution of digital assets are geniuses.

Thanks to this topic I learned a lot of interesting things about cryptography and I also translated your topic into Russian (https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/--5127849) and added these two events for you:

Good job, I hope you have a lot of success in your local board. Wink

I did a little digging of my own a while ago and the closest system that I found in history was UAIF's Distributed Object Technology.
You may add it to your chart somewhere in the 90's scale.

Ok, I'll read to see what it's about.

Thx.

<...>

Tnx.

And must hve to share to the B&H Section.

What is the section B&H?, is it bitcoin History?

<...>

I do not know the answer, but I think that in 10 years, they can have another point of view, markets, speculation, adoption, hardforks, Bitcoin is very young but in 10 years has lived a lot.

But if you also want to overview BTC from economical point then you gonna need to take a look at prehistory of money.
The most obvious book:  The History of Money by Jack Weatherford

Thx, I'm preparing a post showing deflation of the dollar and something else.

I suggest to you recommend this information to pin on any where for the people's wellness.

It is a good proposal.

Awesome list of all of the history of cryptography, if all of this is being binded it would make a book.

Wink Very good idea, if there is an editor in Bitcointalk, you have a lot of material available here.

This is a good reference for a student wanting to make a paper or thesis regarding bitcoin. I just hope that person will find this thread.

If I totally agree.

By the way, why you put this thread on Economics board? This should be on Bitcoin Discussion board, right?

"Bitcoin is an innovative payment network and a new kind of money." > https://bitcoin.org/en/

I could go in the Bitcoin Discussion, but the thread refers to the creation of a new currency or asset, Bitcoin in this case.

Nice thread OP! Now I'm curious about what will be recorded in history after Satoshi's Whitepaper.
By the way, why you put this thread on Economics board? This should be on Bitcoin Discussion board, right?

I wonder if they do have a complete books of it that would be awesome to most Bitcoin enthusiast.

Thanks for the nice hard work for making the graphic of bitcoin prehistory. It is obviously useful for those who want to learn about the history of bitcoin and anything related to it.
If you do not mind, I would like to ask for your permission to share this great information to my local board in translated mode. Let me know whether you are OK or not with it. Thanks.

But it pretty hard to show BTC prehistory from all sides. In your case you mainly point out only technical points. But if you also want to overview BTC from economical point then you gonna need to take a look at prehistory of money.

That one was worth the merit, because it gives a clear picture of what happened prior to Bitcoin, to get it where it is today. Some very smart people laid the foundation for this technology and Satoshi just put everything together in a unique way to make it work. It was there in front of everyone, but Satoshi had the vision and creativity to make it click.  Grin

A lot of people think Bitcoin was something totally new and that Satoshi developed everything from scratch, but that is simply not true. The ingredients was there, Satoshi just put them together and he baked the perfect cake.  Wink

Nice work. I've seen several of the names credited here, although some would probabluly argue there is an underrepresentation of some figures from the cypherpunk community. That's all semantics.

What's interesting for me as well is estimating if all these prehistoric fathers would agree that Bitcoin is an iteration of their work. Chaum, for example, cited in your chart several times, seems to be travelling and promoting some rather commercial project that seems to bear semblance to his work on elliptic curves. Do they see something displacing Bitcoin in terms of adoption and popularity in their lifetime?

I guess Wei Dai's "B-Money" is the first practical embodiment of a decentralized network with PoW algorithm and that is where Satoshi got the inspiration for creating bitcoin. Amazing how Satoshi came up with such a well-thought system from the synthesis of a huge number of papers and articles, which further suggest that he (she, they) might be a well-read individual (organization). I'll have a go at these links again and revisit what i consider as noteworthy ones, such as Wei Dai's B-Money, Hal Finney's paper and Eric Hughes' Cypherpunk Manifesto.

Wow, thanks for making such a nice scheme. I heard about some of the authors, but taking a look at what led to Bitcoin from historical perspective is very interesting. I was trying to offer adding something else to the list, but each time I came by something important, I notice that it was already included  Cheesy Well, maybe I'd offer to your consideration the following book from 2001: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crypto_(book). I don't think it said anything that was not said before, but it kind of united all of the different important things together under the word "crypto".

Well, I would have saved a lot of work looking for the links of each appointment.
If you compare the two listings in which you pass me missing links and luckily are not the same.

I will review them and update them if they have better information.

Thanks for your contribution. Cool
