BTW, changed the invite link: https://discord.gg/ahgHyku (that unfortunately means the posters have an expired invite link if you're planning on sharing them).

Thanks for the great initiative, I'll be there in a few minutes to celebrate the halving. Hopefully lots of people will join. mole0815 was so kind and shared your post in the German section, I am sure many of us will be there tonight!

Less than 25 blocks to go guys, I am getting excited!  Smiley

Stultorum infinitus est numerus
I saw someone in the room earlier with your handle. If you didn’t join the server (as implied), someone is impersonating you.
I've tried to join multiple times over different Tor circuits. Each time I've been stopped by the "Give us your phone number" nonsense, but each time it has shown me the channel name and details, how many people are online, etc. I'm not familiar with Discord, but it seems like I actually join the channel and then am immediately asked to verify? That would perhaps explain my name showing up in the room.

Edit: I got a glimpse of the channel that time before it kicked me out asking for a phone number, so it seems that I've written above is indeed the case. Shame we couldn't use something a bit more privacy respecting like Riot. I also won't be signing up if it requires a phone number or a clearnet connection.
The company behind Discord is unofficially against Tor, and this has been happening to many people. Unfortunately there hasn't been enough public pressure on this matter to resolve it yet.

IIRC, this was due to how easy it is to make an account on Discord, after years of trying to combat spammers and account generators. They just ended up "blacklisting" most VPN providers and TOR nodes to prevent this from happening. If you are connecting from a "secure" network, you can actually make an account by just giving your email address. While any "insecure" connection (basically, any connection that Discord doesn't like) might require a phone number verification.

It can be certainly used via a VPN as many of us are using them. So that could be a compromise if you're willing to do so. Failing that, you could potentially create an account on a VPN connection, and then try using that account as normal on a Tor circuit although this probably defeats the point of using Tor. I'm not sure whether Discord will still ping you, but I'm assuming they just don't like "dirty" connections upon signing up, and once that process has been done it wont bother you much. That's my assumption anyway.

It is a shame that Discord seems to have an issue with Tor because generally its a great platform otherwise.

It's on a short notice, but thought it might be fun to hang out for the 2020 Halving event so we made a Discord server.

Invite link: https://discord.gg/Ne98rJ (I'll renew the link periodically)

- Don't trust Discord with any sensitive info. Act like you're in a public place/chatroom.
- We don't verify members. If you see a familiar user there there's no guarantee that it's not an impersonator (if there's interest, I might add a custom role to users that want and link their user here with the Discord server).
- There's only one text and voice channel for now, we'll add more as needed.
- There aren't any explicit rules or guidelines yet, when in doubt - look at the Bitcointalk rules and guidelines.
- The occasion the server was created is the 2020 Halving event, however it's reason is to give Bitcointalk members a place to chat.

Ideas for events, contests and whatnot are appreciated!
It's a great opportunity to all users of Bitcointalk to enjoy this halving together.Actually I already joined and waiting for others.Hope it will be a memorable party.

To Be Truth: In this Halving Party I am missing you Satoshi Nakamoto.

I haven't ever yet got past the verification page, so if that's not the case, then yes, someone is impersonating me. Thanks for the heads up.

If you make an account over the clearnet I don't think it will demand a phone number from you unless you try to join server where everyone's required to have one. At least that's how I made mine.

Then you can login to discord over Tor without giving phone number details but you'll need to confirm your email each time your IP address changes.

(Also if you see my nickname in the server, it's an imposter, since I won't be joining this server and go by a completely different nickname you can find on my site.)
