I've tried to join multiple times over different Tor circuits. Each time I've been stopped by the "Give us your phone number" nonsense, but each time it has shown me the channel name and details, how many people are online, etc. I'm not familiar with Discord, but it seems like I actually join the channel and then am immediately asked to verify? That would perhaps explain my name showing up in the room.

I haven't ever yet got past the verification page, so if that's not the case, then yes, someone is impersonating me. Thanks for the heads up.

If you make an account over the clearnet I don't think it will demand a phone number from you unless you try to join server where everyone's required to have one. At least that's how I made mine.

Then you can login to discord over Tor without giving phone number details but you'll need to confirm your email each time your IP address changes.

(Also if you see my nickname in the server, it's an imposter, since I won't be joining this server and go by a completely different nickname you can find on my site.)

I saw someone in the room earlier with your handle. If you didn’t join the server (as implied), someone is impersonating you.

Edit: I got a glimpse of the channel that time before it kicked me out asking for a phone number, so it seems that I've written above is indeed the case. Shame we couldn't use something a bit more privacy respecting like Riot. I also won't be signing up if it requires a phone number or a clearnet connection.

Is there any way to create a Discord account over Tor without giving them a phone number for "verification"?

I'm still not familiar with discord but it seems okay for me to try. But I'm a bit curious why we should choose discord for a chatroom? Not something more familiar like a telegram group?

Ideas for events, contests and whatnot are appreciated!
As you said "halving party", I assume we will have a fun activity or program related to halving. I hope it will be an event, contest, competition that can be joined by all members (beginner - experienced members). I've still no idea about what kind of activity or program, but I hope it can meet these criteria:
- easy/simple
- entertain/fun
- educated (about halving)

>I think the best option: contest or competition.

Phone number only first time, you will able to change verification phone number into 2fa. TOR, discord have captcha every login.

Maybe you might call support team to create account wihout phone number. https://twitter.com/discord/status/943869029030203392

Did you use the App or the browser window tap for discord ?
Normaly when you using the browser window tab it should be ok with just email verification and it should be working !
But dont know if that is working on tor because i dont use it .

If this discord channel will stay longer and not only for the halving maybe add it to the Help button .
If the above would be implemented, someone who causes enough trouble in the discord channel could face repercussions on bitcointalk, and access could be limited to those above certain ranks.

AFAIK the Discord server isn't official. It was just created by Cyrus, who also happens to be a Bitcointalk admin. For the time being, I'm helping out in moderating it though I can't guarantee I'll always be active. We'll see how this goes I guess.
Even if the current discord server is not official, that does not mean it can't be used as a trial to eventually implement something official, possibly with forum implementation. I wouldn't think that something similar to discord or slack would be terribly difficult to implement.

I am not familiar with all of discord's features, but if it is possible to setup a server such that users have to be manually approved to join, you could create a bot that asks for a user's bitcointalk handle, once received, the bot could send a PM to the bitcointalk account, and the person would need to click on a link within the PM to verify their discord account belonging to the person behind the bitcointalk account. Once verified, the bot could allow the discord account to access the private channel.

Yes, there's various ways of doing verification, and it shouldn't be too much of a problem to code a little verification script if this was to become more than a one time thing. Currently, I think we could just do a manual verification. At the moment though, its just for the Bitcoin halving event.

I'm personally treating the Discord server as a more relaxing, casual environment to talk about things somewhat related to the forum rather than an extension of Bitcointalk itself.
I was referring to NotATether's comment about spammers/trolls posting bad things that makes chatting on the server to be undesirable.

I'm a regular member of a fairly big discord server with 20000+ members and a little over 10 staff and one big problem I noticed in it is handling people who spam in there. With limited moderators it's not unheard of that someone spams the channel with memes/shitposts/NSFW every 30 minutes and the repetitive nature of these offenses creates a burden for moderation in that you need moderators who monitor the server full time, or else it deteriorates into a cesspool of language because many people on discord tend to act like kids. And then there are server raids.

I'm assuming this server is going to have a couple thousand members on it so the chances of someone inviting a lot of bot users to flood the channels is real, and I have witnessed this in other servers.

If this server is to be a long term social outlet then you should get Dyno Premium (a bot which can be programmed to kick/ban/mute people) in your server along with a bunch of hired staff who are willing to maintain it. And herein lies the problem. There are almost 3 million registered users here, I'll assume only a few hundred thousand of those are active, most of them bounty hunters, but still that number quickly reaches the size of the largest discord servers. This forum only has a few dozen staff in total, some of which are not active or have no interest in moderating a discord community, which is tiring on it's own, but it's even more tiring if same staff are simultaneously moderating their respective boards, so this is double moderation work which is even more tiring.

So as a result of that spam is inadvertently let though and the quality of conversation in discord channels goes down to altcoins board/cryptotalk levels. This drives away many members who want to hold quality conversations.

I have also seen server owners temp. suspended if their server violates discord TOS as the result of users abusing it, I mean particularly posting NSFW stuff in non-NSFW channels. You need to protect yourselves from this liability by either banishing NSFW content or making a special channel for it.

This could be a fun way to experiment possibly making a bitcointalk chat room. A chat room might be a good alternative to some mega threads, such as the WO thread, and some others focusing on current events.

Maybe a quiz related to bitcoin / bitcointalk.org or a prize for the closest prediction of the price when the halving occurs could be entertaining?

Those that wanted a Bitcointalk.org live chat system, your prays has been answered.

Also, I heard Cyrus is giving out Ninja roles Tongue

I see this going one of 2 ways;

1. We all have a good time, crack a few beers out (other non alcoholic drinks are available), and actually get together as a community

2. It gets trolled to oblivion, and destroys a chance of getting together for a nice event.

Thanks for Discord Channel and invite for !

Hopefully the halving bring some good things to Bitcoin and to the Forum and maybe more people will use it .
Also fingers crossed that all goes well on the halving and there is no problem on the blockchain.
