You’re right. Since I don’t scrape all forum posts, I base this part of the information on the Dashboard on the official forum Stats (the counters on the main page). Specifically, I compare the numbers at the end of month, to those at the end of the previous month.
Whilst the above is adequate when there is no significant retrospective post deletion (self or mod), it does not reflect the data properly when it happens, since deletions will reflect in the month’s data when, in fact, it may be the action of deletion actions performed this month over posts in prior months. This is likely what has happened on your local board on last month’s readings, rendering last month’s data void. This happens frequently on the Russian local board, where the data is often affected by this effect, and others resort to other sources of information for the post count.
