It might be too early to call, but the downward trend is resuming.
That's surprising, especially after Theymos upped the sMerit allotments for merit sources and added new ones.  Personally, I have never given out as many merits in a one month time period than I have in July.  I started off the month with 1000 source sMerits, and as of this moment I think I have about 145 left.

I wonder what the problem is.  Are merit sources being stingy, or does the problem lie with members who aren't merit sources?  It's all well and good that I gave out 800+ merits this month, but if the members who received them don't pay them forward....then there's a problem.  Unfortunately, there's not much any of us can do to make anyone give out merits if they don't want to.

I'd hate to have to factor in someone's merit-giving history before granting them merits, and it's not something I've thought of before and don't intend to do--but if I'm basically sending merits to a dead end, I'm not helping the merit system as a whole, and that's something I very much want to do.

In addition, there are 2 new Legendary and 4 new Hero Members this week.
That seems absurdly low, but I don't know what the data looked like before the merit system started.  DdmrDdmr, do you have any of that data compiled by any chance, i.e., how many new Hero and Legendary members there were on a weekly basis prior to January 2018?

I think that last two weeks results are mostly due that sudden increase in merit; people probably spent it way fast, so merit shared started slowing down. 24773 merit shared during July is the best result in the last year and a half (since February 2020).

Really curious about the new equilibrium.
Considering the overall lower forum activity, I think current amount of merit is more than enough, but yeah it will be interesting to see how it pans out in the next couple of months.

Of course some Merit sources have still adapt to new allowances, some might have depleted too quickly (I do plead guilty), while some other might still have a backlog.

Really curious about the new equilibrium.

Third really, although each massive increase has it’s trigger event:

1)   17/09/2018 .. 23/09/2018 -> 167,35% increase from prior week -> 9.587 awarded Merits -> Trigger: Merit Source review
2)   18/11/2019 .. 24/11/2019 -> 148,54% increase from prior week -> 22.254 awarded Merits  -> Trigger: 10th Anniversary art contest

Ah, nice that, I never noticed you were decoupling complete week compared to most recent data, so I was expecting to see the massive increase in Merits sent this week.
I am far ahead distributing my new merit source, but I see on average others might be lagging behind.
I guess there will need some time to adjust to the new sMerits allowances.

Thanks @DdmrDdmr @fillippone, I updated the merit activity and monthly post for Indonesian local board. It seem that an incident like this has happened before when I haven't updated monthly post activities and merit for local board or to be precise in July and August 2020. Of course, because the activity chart that I made only specializes on Indonesian local board, then -91 will make one upside down candle on the monthly chart. Again, thanks for the explanation.

As I am doing this kind of updates for the Italian board, I regularly notice this kind of “cleaning” activity taking  place from time to time across all boards.
My suggestion is to ask some “colour” on this to your local moderator as he could give you some more insight.

Ah! This is going to help our board overcoming yours! (Long shot extrapolation needed!)

Not exactly. It means that -91 net posts were "created". Net posts are: Created – deleted +/moved. It is also subject to forum reindexes, which may affect these counters (data is derived from forum official stats, comparing consecutive months).
Essentially, it means that there have been more posts deleted or moved from the Indonesian Altcoin board, than created.
Yes, negative numbers means the total post count of a specific board has decreased compared to previous snapshot.
This can be due to a number of reasons, namely
  • Post deleted by user
  • Post deleted by moderator
  • Post moved to a different board

It is important to notice that whatever the cause, the posts that have beencdelted/moved, might have been posted earlier than the last period. I.e., regarding this specific issue, total post in June on that board might well be positive, but outnumbered by old  post deletions by a moderator.

Edit: sorry, didn’t notice @ddmrddmr already answered

When this happens, normally due to an increase in moderation, it’s best to discard the month’s reading for the board. If it happens sparsely, it should not be much of an issue. If it happens regularly, as it does lately on the Russian Local board, it renders the post count unusable/unreliable for that board for the implicated months. It could also lead to asking the local mod, just to understand better what happened for the local language community.

Wee mistake of mine with the legit copy/paste/adapt on the referenced post with the dates (now amended)...

Actually, I pumped 128 merits on one of my occasional remeriting sprees on the 20th, so those are accounted for in the 13,49% increase (that alone accounted for 4,5 of those perceptual points). The weekly increase or decrease is not that significant, but rather the trend as you imply. That is easier analysed here:

https://public.tableau.com/views/BitcointalkMeritDashboard/MeritSendersReceivers?:language=en-US&:display_count=n&:origin=viz_share_link

Bearing in mind that the current month is yet partial, we could compare May 2021 (15.802 merits) to May 2020 (23.874 merits) and the sliding inter-monthly trend in between. On the other hand, the number of net created posts has also decreased noticeably in that period of time. Personally, I find less posts to merit now than some months ago.

At first this weekly increase may sound good and optimistic, but when you check the total amount of merit shared during June which is 10,711 and considering only six days left until end of the month we will most likely reach new all time low (current one is April 2021 with 15551). Then again, that was pretty obvious since last week, that we are heading towards new ATL.

You received 116 merit in 17 consecutive days. From March 5, 2019 to March 21, 2019.
Thank you for finding that for me!  I did try to visit the page but for some reason it wouldn't load, and I just gave up after a while.

And man....I was certainly correct that my longest streak was nowhere near Filippone's.  Not even close (although if I had to guess when I wrote my previous post I would have thought it was longer).  Nevertheless, streaks don't matter to me personally because I know there are some days when I don't post much--or at all--and some days when what I post probably doesn't catch anybody's attention enough such that they want to merit any of it.

If I'm honest, my merit count has mattered less and less to me as time has passed, though it does supply me with sMerits I can redistribute to other members when my source sMerits run out.  That's me, though.  There's nothing wrong with being proud of the merits you've earned or what your longest streak was.  Despite what a lot of members say, merits aren't easy to earn.  If they were, we'd have far more members ranking up past Jr. Member each activity period, and though I don't know what the exact numbers are on that, I'm pretty sure it's much, much lower than it was before the merit system was foisted upon the forum back in 2018.

Of course, it had to be done.
It was reverse psychology, wasn’t it?
Dear lord, my mind is so easy to trick!
That wasn't my intention; I meant what I wrote, but I do thank you for the merits nevertheless.  As I mentioned, more merit received=more sMerits I can send when Theymos doesn't replenish my source sMerits.
