If they do I would agree on OpenWrt being most likely.  It is what Avalon used on tp nano and RPI to control some miners.

Who knows maybe someone could use that as a base of with OpenWrt, and look to see what Avalon did to it to get mining nice and GUI.   I still want to see initial screens of the R1.  I don't see why that one review did not show some of it at least.

It appears to be running OpenWRT in this review.

Thank You!  I had seen the cybtc review but it did not cover near enough.

This is great I will give it a read.

It would be nice to have option to install custom firmware on this device. dd-wrt and cgminer package.
DD-WRT is unlikely and IMO inferior to OpenWRT anyways. DD-WRT is mainly known for supporting broadcom based hardware which this device will not be based off of.

Give it time only a few reviewers/resellers have it already.   Most have not got the device even yet.

Bitmain has never locked down firmware in past.  So big plus there as far as a device like this.  There will be mods no doubt.  But we don't even know what regular setup does yet.

Hard to plan a mod without knowing regular design Smiley.  So give it time and it will come.

If you or anyone else has one they can power up can they PM me? I'll give you firmware extraction instructions so that I can start on a custom firmware for these.

I do love your enthusiasm, look forward to your initial thoughts when you get a first look.  Smiley I think this will be a fun device, not in the way that Bitmain intended but what the community will turn it into....

They are light as hell, weigh about 250 grams with the box. It certainly looks like a two prong USA plug to me  Shocked

Will come with free USA three prong adapter for good measure, shipping is $6 usd

I really don't need the network part with my nighthawk I love my network.   I had a crazy amount of clients and upgraded and it's been perfect.  It was kinda sad to switch from my old ddwrt.... i stuck with it for years.

I really just want a lotto device and reliable controller for U series (and even other sticks if possible).  So if they made just a lotto box without all the networking I would be happy.
It was probably just easier to include the networking stuff since the board they use already has it, that's why the S3 technically had wifi but just didn't have the antenna connected.

I think part of it they wanted a product in this category of lotto mining.  And I don't know for sure but I still think it would not suprise me if they somehow tied it in with hashnest stuff.  For example show hashnest speed, etc.  I could be completly off and they don't do that.

But I have to think it was designed more then just 5G of mining.  But if they did just make a solid U3 controller out of it I would be happy..

We'll soon see if i was a right and its just a ploy to redirect hashrate to their pool. But i doubt the address is hardwired in, so we'll probably be able to flash/hack the firmware and do what WE want to do with it. I just don't think what WE want to do with is is what Bitmain wants to do with it.

They are very good businessmen and i'm pretty sure if they do something like a new kind of product, its to make more money.

I hope the R2 uses 802.11ac along with the bm1385 chip and someone is able to hack the firmware to mine on the pool of our choice as well as acting like a network extender instead of a router.  I would pay $50 for that, although it would still probably only get 25GH/s.

The R1 should be usable as a network extender actually since it runs OpenWRT.

BTW I'll try and do custom firmware builds for this based off of mainline OpenWRT. I'm working with an OpenWRT developer and we currently have S1 custom firmware working and should have S3 soon, this device appears to be very similar.

If you're shipping from China you can definitely ship it cheaper, why is this not an option?

To ensure a Safe and Tracked shipping , those are what we could do at the time being.
Will the cheaper option be returning when more of those units come out? A 30$ device doesn't exactly need 18$ worth of shipping for piece of mind, I think it's in the price range for cheap shipping.

Yes if I was iTop I would use $5 shipping, (or whatever cheap shipping is) charge $6 and put the Dollar towards sending replacements for any that are lost or damaged in transport.

You can get the shipping down to reasonable cost/unit if you order at least 20 at a time. I thought of buying in bulk and selling at my website but changed my mind. Anticipated profit per unit was less than $10 at a reasonable selling price; not worth my time. When China holiday is over I may contact Bitmain to inquire about wholesale pricing.
