A urine-powered generator presented by a group of school-age girls at an innovation fair in Africa is generating buzz as a world-changing breakthrough, but a reality-check with the expert who invented the contraption at the heart of the technology might flush those expectations down the drain.

The contraption in question is an electrolytic cell that converts urea — the main compound in urine besides water — into nitrogen, water and hydrogen.

“What these kids are doing is taking urea electrolysis and making hydrogen and then using that hydrogen to make electricity,” Gerardine Botte, a chemical engineer at Ohio University who invented the urea electrolysis process, told NBC News when asked to comment on the generator.

In todays World, who is living better become "smart" in the eyes of society.
The picture of some economically depressed village in Africa reflect nothing about Africans.

I wouldn't say the whole of Africa, more like central(ish) Africa. There are some really, really rich countries, tho theocracy is in it's peak there but none the less they're rich countries. Also, a few countries have been pretty decent for living but fell apart into a mess after US spreading it's democracy there. Yes, it's true that there are a lot of potential smart people there, but they lack the potential and a chance to get out of there and make something out of themselves.

What the hell? You're a racist. Are you white? So if you are white, i understand you. White hates black, thats the truth. Its not about the race. Its about education. Why america have black scientist, doctors, engineers, senators and most president. Africa is a poor country. They need food than education. Thats why many of them doesnt have decent work and poor. But some of them are intelligent but doesnt given a chance. Have you read a news that two black people invented urine as a biogas.

Some African countries are more riches (Income Per Capita) as Countries in Europe (EU): Seychelles, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Botswana.
And average income of Seychelles ($25000 at year) is higher, than the income of 46 millions of USA citizens (lower, than $20000 at year).
If You check at Ukraine, there is about $800-$1400 Income Per Capita at Year.
