What should be correct diff for 20GHs equipment?

Is there an advantage of increasing difficulty from 2 Gh/s default to a threshold closer to my worker's hash rate? This would improve which variable? Sorry I'm sure this has been answered in previous thread but thought I'd ask anyway. Thanks Smiley

The only advantage in doing so is if you have high end equipment.  Lots of high end ASIC miners tend to have a few problems when running at very low difficulties due to the amount of communication required when running at hundreds of GH/s at a low difficulty.  The pool will automatically adjust your difficulty if it's not high enough, but it takes a minute or two to find the sweet spot.  By setting a minimum difficulty, you can bypass this startup phase which will save you a few rejects early on.  It also cuts down on bandwidth, though that isn't a huge deal for anybody with broadband access due to how little bandwidth it requires in general.

Higher difficulties do have higher variance, but the recommended speeds in the drop-down are set to levels where the variance is minimal as long as you have that much speed or better.

No advantage.  The pool adjusts your difficulty based on worker speeder.  Higher difficulty == higher variance.

Q for BTCGuild: I live in Asia (Thailand) and wondering if I would be better off using the eu-server rather than us-server? Why?

Could just switch and find out but thought I'd ask first.
Thanks

Unless you have a really poor internet connection, I don't think it'll matter.

M

Thanks mdude...good to know

First you say this

If my hash rate according to my miner and cgminer us a 560Gh/s average, why does BTC Guild report back my speeds at 529-580 inconsistently?

Then when people try to explain that to you, you then change your gripe to this

No, my hash rate is not close to my average that's why I was bringing it up here. Seeing a constant 560 on my end, then seein 519 on the Guild is depressing. Where is that 50Gh/s disappearing to? I would understand 10 or even 20 for variance, but 50 is a whole bunch to just poof into no where?

A friendly suggestion.

Get your story straight then post.

Dude, blow me. Your entitlement god like I know it all attitude is exactly what bitcoin doesn't need. No, don't blow me. Lick my balls. If you don't have anything to contribute or ask just keep your mouth shut, eh? They're the same thing, asking a different way turd.

Your the one who blames a pool for doing something nefarious every time you refuse to understand something.  That isn't fair to the pools.

Congratulations your the first ever to make my ignore list.

Because someone doesn't understand something, then they reach out for help on the pool thread is normal to me. When did I ever blame the pool? I'm not an enlistment know it all like you are, and have questions once in a while.  You were that kind of person that picked up kids that didn't know as much as you. Scum of the earth I'll call that.

Well then luck must be really bad right now.

No, YOUR luck is really bad.  It's YOUR variance.  It's nothing to do with the pool.

Please tell me. What is varying on my end???

Reported variance in hashrate is normal.  Look at the average over a few days, that's a better picture of what's really happening.

There's one pool I use that routinely varies my reported hashrate to as much as 3x my real hashrate.  It's like hashes flow like traffic, not a steady flow, first goes fast, then slow, but in the end, in averages out.

M

Thanks. Your analogy with traffic flow puts it into a better perspective.

The only reason why I brought it up was from my previous post that no one answered. Maybe I'll just ask it again here.

If my hash rate according to my miner and cgminer us a 560Gh/s average, why does BTC Guild report back my speeds at 529-580 inconsistently? As I said before I'm sure it is something I can check, I just don't know how. All my error rates are low and cgminer itself tells me I'm good. Is it a lag thing between my setup here?

Because I haven't been able to get consistent rates, that's why I was going to try another pool to see what happens. But I really hate touching or changing things around just for testing.
Thanks

Your 560 reported speed will include hardware errors (probably 1-3%).  Additionally, the pool can only estimate your speed (as posted above).  The general variance for the pool is +/- 10% on the dashboard.  You can see on your Charts page a longer term average which shows you how it fluctuates.

The average should be roughly:

Miner Reported Speed - Hardware Error % - Rejected %.  BTC Guild's speed estimates ignore invalid shares, so it's your EFFECTIVE speed.

Well then luck must be really bad right now. I don't think I ever saw such low hash rates on the Guild since I started here. I'm usually seeing at least 550Gh/s, but when it dips to into the 520's, I start to lose out. I've done nothing on my end. No changes. I keep my hands off my miner, since it always has done well...but when I saw my hash rates just consistently drop lower and lower, I had to at least ask why.

I also saw that ghash.io pool size. Does make you wonder, 0 fees and growing at a quick rate. If you are getting rewarded the same amount, is it loyalty that people stick around? Just trying to understand, as we all hate fees. I also don't know how a pool operator makes money. Are the pool fees how The Guild makes money? If yes, then how the heck the other 0 fee pools keep servers going with no fees? Scratching my head.

Lower performance, less support, less time spent upgrading and maintaining servers (both frontend and backend).  Ghash.io's stability is abysmal by any reasonable standard.  The only reason they're so big is more than 50% of their speed is a private farm of ASICs since they're acquiring them basically at cost from BitFury.

What you are seeing is called Variance. As your difficulty goes up it gets harder to find a share. Luck is also involved, so although you may be hashing at a regular rate, the frequencey that you find shares varies. The pool determines your hashrate based on shares returned. If you get lucky and find a bunch of shares quickly it thinks you have a higher hashrate. if your get unlucky and find shares slower it thinks you have a lower hashrate. You should just check that your hashrate is close to your average.
