You guys are funny. The absolute only coin brought up in this thread with any recent volume or growth (20x in the last 10 days!) is blackcoin, which was barely mentioned then dismissed as a shitcoin.

Right now everyone should look for non-Scrypt coins as these are the ones that will do well when the Scrypt ASICs hit. Take a quick read of the article on Scrypt and the impact that ASICs will have, there's a bit of history in it for SHA-256 ASIC impact.

Changing landscape for GPU miners

Scrypt-Jane and Adaptive-N give diminishing returns. There is X11 by Evan Duffield which performs better than Scrypt and uses less energy. Take a look at Hirocoin, it is a thoroughly coded and looks to be the new home for GPU miners. When GPU miners look at the cost of mining and factor it in X11 will be the next choice for them, due to the complexity of X11 it will be ASIC free for a long time even if there is another round of ASICs.

Add Solarcoin (SLR) !! Solarcoin is the next big up-and-comer, it will be the next DOGEcoin at least and most likely will take over the #2 spot from Litecoin.  Solarcoin has a detailed infrastructure already in place with the solar industry, so it's going to go WAY up in value and stay there.

And I'm not just saying that because I'm holding 80,000 SLR waiting for prices to surge so I can profit out of it.  Long term hold for maximum profit, NOW is the time to get in on it!!!

DGC really deserves more attention, been out for 10 months and has been very well maintained, pretty much proven to be an honest coin at this point.

1. BTC. Mostly because it was number one and most widely accepted. Either if you like it or not, this has to get pushed into mainstream, then the other coins will also get more accepted.
2. LTC. Same as number one.
3. Mintcoin. I think this coin will go up, as it has a good dev, good website, is on many exchange sites. Right now is in the gutter, but who knows?
4. Vertcoin. Coin of asic resistance, good community.
5. Goldcoin. Dev good, and one of the first to find a solution for 51% threats.
6. Darkcoin, as more people become concerned about there privacy.
7. I like flutter coin, as it is POW, POS, and POB, which is proof of block. Basically whenever you send a transaction you have a chance of getting blocks.

Not to be taken seriously:

Litecoin

Are you kidding me, this coin was dying before all the hype of being added to Chinese exchanges.  What sort of real development has taken place in the last 2 years??? That's right, virtually nothing.

Only going down from here

That's why actively developed coins will replace litecoin.

.
(Cool Maybe not a rule however I prefer coins with a block reward that halves no less that every 2-4 years.

Why, what's wrong with coins that halve more often?

I question how secure the network will be when the block reward halves to the extent that the coin isn't profitable to mine (Quarkcoin for example, 51% attack). The price would have to rise dramatically to keep up with the block reward halving (I said it wasn't a rule, just makes me feel uneasy). The only solution to this issue is mass adoption with people using it as a currency generating transaction fees. It seems unlikely this will happen anytime soon.

Ok, so I’m relative new to all of this. So in the spirit of gaining acumen of crypto currencies, what metrics should I judge individual coins to to determine their relative merit? This is a very exciting, yet somewhat baffling technology-
A simple list of traits and what benefit those traits provide would be great!
Thnx

(1) Most coins are doomed to fail therefore ensure you hold mostly Bitcoin and Litecoin (say 70%). Most people are speculating on altcoins to buy more Bitcoin/Litecoin before the altcoin market consolidates.
(2) Never listen to anything on an exchanges trollbox.
(3) Never leave your coins on an exchange. Remember these are unregulated exchanges (you wouldn't trust your money with somebody you have just met would you). Transfer them to your personal wallet (only download from the coins official website) ensuring that you password encrypt them with a secure password (atleast 30 digits). You should always backup your wallet on multiple external hard drives/USB sticks. I personally have all my coins stored on two external hard drives and not on my desktop ensuring that they are offline and away from hackers. Your passwords should be offline and never kept in the same location as your coins. If you lose your passwords you have lost your coins therefore more than one copy is sensible. It will take some time to synchronize your wallets, however it's worth it for the security and control.
(4) Timing - Don't buy a coin because you are afraid of missing the train. If a coin is rising fast without good reason it is been artificially inflated to be dumped on the market. Only buy when it's settled in price (after the fall). When you are happy to buy monitor the exchanges for a while to ensure you are not buying at the daily peak. You will notice that nobody buys at the current sell price, therefore I suggest you don't either.
(5) When considering coins other than Bitcoin/Litecoin you should pick those that have innovation. An example would be ASIC resistance. I suggest you read up on this as this could be a game changer.
(6) Be careful investing in coins with premines (mining coins before the launch date) and IPOs (initial public offerings). Either avoid or spend more time researching these.
(7) Too many newbies panic sell when the price falls. If you avoid buying into a pump and ensure you buy at a 24 hour low you should hold through panic sells as it's probably a trap.
(Cool Maybe not a rule however I prefer coins with a block reward that halves no less that every 2-4 years.
(9) There is no substitute for research. People here are biased and will try everything to get you to buy their coin. Make sure you are comfortable with the coins as nobody will offer you a refund when it goes wrong.
