The truth is that we are between a rock and hard place, scientists need to develop the vaccine as soon as possible not only to save as many lives as they can but also to avoid the scenario you are alluding of the virus mutating and maybe becoming even more lethal in the process, but at the same time they cannot really rush it because if they do and then we find out the vaccine had something wrong they could do even more damage than the virus itself and people may lose faith in vaccines just when we need their cooperation the most.
I don’t think that people lose faith in vaccines while we have scientists who keep official statistics on how much benefit the vaccines brought and how they prolonged human life and reduced infant mortality at an early age.
