yes, this is a risk because coins that are not top 100 have a low trading volume but usually there is a good coin to keep under the top 100 because the coin project is good but if you don't know how to find good coins, my advice is don't try because it has risks big
Most of the alt coins outside the top 100 on CMC, are just pump and dumping scheme that shouldn't be invested in for a long time, the coins market are usually manipulated.
Those coins have less volume and there for more vulnerable. Still you can find great picks outside the top100 with dedicated teams behind it. Usually coins that are outside the top 100 are young and promising and sometimes it is very profitable to invest in such coins and get a good profit over time

Currently my entire portfolio is altcoins outside the top 100. I also invest in IEO projects now. They are quite risky and I recommend that newbie not buy those tokens. Its price is growing very oddly and we cannot predict anything. I have lost more than 70 - 80% of my assets. But sometimes I can also make my property x11. 
Of course, buying non-top 100 alts is a huge risk. But such coins sometimes grow in price and even give X50-X100. Therefore, I think that one can buy such coins, but you need to analyze strongly how promising this project is. Well, if you risk you shouldn't do it with large sums.

in my opinion the greater the risk obtained, the greater the benefits of investing in crypto currencies, the confidence and patience needed in the investment of coins that we will choose is a coin that we believe will bring profits, of course. There are a lot of Altcoins out there with very good potentials but lack investment. These are the kind of projects that are worth a look in with a view of investing into them. These kind of coins/tokens are the ones that will make you a lot of money if chosen correctly. Projects like HYDRO, FXP, XY Oracle etc are a notable few, these are solid projects that will mostly likely do well in the long run. Not every coin out of the top 100 is a shitcoin. Just do some research.

The thing to look out for these days is how possible it is to apply the ideas behind a coin in the physical world.
Lower price coin with good team and programs to execute do bring in huge returns than the so called top 100 altcoins. Just imagine what profit people have made from Matic, DGTX before they retracted in price. Taking profit when necessary is very important as greediness can be dangerous.
Of course I buy, among not the Top-100 coins there are good coins, hectares of which you can earn well.

First of all u need to watch the alt coin company such as activities,airdrops,watch there social networks, how much followers they have then you will take a simple inner thinking about do you see it will go up in the futureOr it will go down if u decided it will go up then don't forget to invest what you can afford to lose because if your decision was not in his place you you will not lose all your money or even your saving if you had much faith on it
But in the other hand if your decision was on its place
You will be happy for ever
So the bottom line is alt coins is always risky if its new

Ranking is not the only parameter to determine the performance of a coin especially when the coin is new on the market. You can still invest in them if you think they have the potentials to rise to the top one day.
I personally believe in Altcoin in the Top 100 CMC, especially the Top 10 CMC, because they have the potential to increase in the future. They have very large trading volumes every day, so it's very good to trade.

I think I made that mistake too,,, thinking of profit rather than of actually using the coin, and actually having a community to discuss with and all that. And I guess now I no longer look at top 100 or not, I just spend my time discussing and owning a project I love and can use, does not even matter if I can trade it or not!

I have some of them in my portfolio at the moment. But of course, the percentage is very low. You have to choose very carefully because most of them are going to die and most of them are pump and dump coins/tokens.
Just short term investment not for the long term.

yes i have bought some altcoins those who are not in the top 100.. though most people recommend to buy altcoins that are in the top 100, its good to explore also those are not in the top, specially if their dev team is still active
