It depends on what you want to achieve in your life of course, but if you want to start in a company, it's always an asset. Especially in the well known companies. In my country, if you don't have any degree, it's very difficult to find a good job, the recruiters don't care about your skills or your experience, they only want to see your degree.

If they want someone with a bachelor for a cashier job, they are damn stupid. They want someone very overqualified? The manager obviously doesn't know anything about hiring. You don't use a bachelor for a cashier job, even worse, they specify ANY bachelor. What in the living hell? It's like the manager doesn't know how the world works.

College degrees are and will always be important, in the digital age you can learn a lot from the internet, but attending at college and showing the HR your degree for a real company (not talking about cashier jobs here) will get you a much better chance of being hired with a much larger wage than someone without a degree.

It depends on the situation. As a freelancer/investor myself I don't to hold any college degree to be able to earn money as long as I am proficient of my work.

We’ve got 15 voters so far!

Yes - 60% best thing I saw was that having a degree gives you a lot of options to start on, easier to qualify and there is a sense of security.
No - 20% it’s becoming less and less needed as we approach the future
Depends - 20% really depends on the type of career you wish to pursue. Experience and skill set matters more now inan employers perspective.

Really really great output guys Im learning so much, convinces me even to think of wrapping up the degree at some point.

Ofcourse!!  College degree still matter in digital age because no matter how you do, companies would always require aspiring employee to have a degree before they could enter the position theyre applying. It is a ticket to find and easier to be in a decent work.

That is the case, at least here in India. It also depends from where you have got your degree. If your degree is from a premier institute such as the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) or the Indian Institute of Science (IISC), the you will be in very high demand, and you may get a lot of options to chose from.

VOTE in the Poll!

Like many people I’m a college drop-out and the current consensus for people who does not have a degree is not that great compared to those who has at least a Bachelor’s diploma.

When people asks me how would I be able to compete with those graduates my answer is, a lot of the things that I do in my current job can be learned through an 8 hour online course in Udemy or a simple search in google.

However, I was passing by a big drugstore chain in my place and I saw the job posting outside and it says:

“WANTED: Cashier
Requirements: Bachelor’s degree in any field”

That made me wonder, why does a degree matter for that position?

I am a Software Development Quality Assurance Engineer and I was very lucky that my employer trusted the skills I bring in, because if to take and count money requires the fancy diploma, then I won’t survive getting a job at least not for now.

My thoughts are, if it were my doctor, Im pretty sure I wouldn’t want someone who would tell me that “Well I googled it and I think you have cancer” but other positions in a company, or the mahor industries as well, can easily be learned through training and self education.

What are your thoughts folks? Share and reply. Let’s have a meaningful exchange!

To make it in today world you need a lot of know how, you need to be really good and really prepared. If you act in a traditional field, of course a degree is necessary. But in new domains, school don't give anything useful to you. Actually, you lose time to learn unrelated things, and you pay a lot of money for them.
But you need experience. So, work in the field, and find a mentor.

The better their skills and education have, the greater their chances for quality employment. Many job markets specifically call for a degree, and those who wish to enter them have no choice but to get the qualifications they need.

Definitely, the other one has to compliment the other. Without the drive and passion to utilize the skills you’ve learned in the Uni, a degree is just a piece of paper.
In the tech industry though its getting more and more common for certified folks to be more on the mand than the fresh grads.

Yes, I strongly believe that college degrees would still matter in whatever era it may be. Education is still important and is in fact the most effective tool we may have as no one can take it away from us.

I think it depends if you could use what you have learn from college then I think it still matters,
But if you took something that doesn't really matter or connected in the digital world or the cyber world then I think it is pretty much useless in here.

I'm just seeing a lot of people who has a degree in another field, but takes like 6 months worth of mobile app development or Java or front-end development and nails a job in the Tech industry not because of their degree whatever that is, but the fact that they got into a certification that matters to the project.

I think my only hope is that college education would become more affordable to the masses. So we won't all need to wonder why OG employers still sees it as a requirement.

I think college degree still matters. Yes it is digital age but it doesn't mean technology can make all the job. We have to go to college, have a degree and get a job

Well my take is it depends. It depends on a few things. 1. What kind of jobs are we talking about here? 2. Can the skillset for the job be trained in a span of 3 months compared to 4 years of education 3. What kind of educational system does a country offer?

In my place its crazy that a cashier entales a degree for you to be good or even qualify to be one. I dont have anything againts cashiers, I respect any position, but I dont think you should have a college degree to qualify for it (the ROI does not make any sense to me)because the skillset required can be easily acquired.

Good point. But, generally speaking, I think it still matters. Having a credential that can boost your qualifications is never a bad thing. Also, even if you get in a career that wouldn't require a degree, it's never too bad to have knowledge because one way or another, you would use it somewhere or something. There are so many degrees that can equip you better in this digital age that you could use to earn money, if not, help you with life tasks that you may encounter on a daily basis. I believe that knowledge is power!

My straight forward is no. Many rich people now arent that technically a college graduate. But even a college grad has a job, they have to work their ass off to get money like doctors or lawyers or any same job like that. Example for me is pro athletes or even these rappers. Some artist even are not just graduating after they got all money. Even multimillionaires arent so called high school grad. For me its how you deal with life and how you work your way to the top graduated or not.

Yes, because the university experience can be amazing in many ways apart from the fact of getting a degree, especially socially and by being exposed to ideas and subjects beyond your own narrow interest

Yes it does because most employers now a days look for your diploma and transcript before hiring you. Even if you have skills for that certain job it doesn't matter if you don't reach their requirements. And also if you are applying for a certain position for example regarding database admin they will look for your grades if you are good at it.
