I see you're a computer science student, then maybe you should focus on the technicalities of bitcoin. Start your essay on the history of bitcoin and how was it made and have a transition to the technical side of it.
One idea that I could think of is whether Quantum computing will make bitcoin mining much faster, the technology is promising in my opinion because we are currently reaching a plateau in computing speed, and in relation to that no matter how you upgrade your mining rig, it will not matter because we reached the cap.

Basically Bitcoin and blokchain are different but have a relationship. because your topic is about Comp science. means you have to get knowledge about programming languages, PoW, coding from bitcoin. You can search for knowledge on the official bitcoin website, or in this forum in the Bitcoin forum section.
I would like to recommend to your research is about how does the bitcoin works and how does it helps the community but of course this is an essay so it's needs to have a good title. Like

My topic is going to be Bitcoin(Comp. science) , although it seemed like a good idea at start , the topic seems to be quite too narrow. I have to research about Bitcoin, what part of it should I do the research on?

I tried to make a research for my university when I was finishing my studies and had the same problem.
There is not so much research around bitcoin and blockchain from the universities. Mostly, companies that move around fintech has written essays and articles about that which do not make valid sources for a university citation.
Try to scan the Bitcoin whitepaper it will help you to get ideas or additional information. Making an essay is a little bit difficult but if you're fluent in english then it would be easy just expand your opinions on you can compose your own words about bitcoin. Try also to search some articles about bitcoin and also the whole cryptocurrency.
I think the main purpose of creating bitcoin is like that, satoshi nakamoto wants to create a digital currency that cannot be controlled by others, so only those who have bitcoin can control it and can be used as the safest and fastest transaction solution.Some bitcoin transactions are not safe due to those hackers that can enter a certain platform that you are using.
If you are really careful about sending a bitcoin in a right addresses then you will not have a problem in making transactions.
Also, I think the reason why Satoshi Nakamoto made this digital currency is for people to have an asset where they can benefit for life due to its importance and benefits in the economy. Such an interesting topic to write about. If I write such essay I would take such topics as mining or transactions. There is wide field to talk about. Even the quantum computer problem is already solved. The fact that most people use a new bitcoin address each time would make a bitcoin quantum attack pretty much useless. In the future new addresses will be generated and used automatically.

Another idea for the math-minded would be to take the time between blocks data and see if those times conform to the expected probability of time between blocks (10 minute average, Poisson Distribution (?)).
If you know your statistics, that would be an interesting study and not be "too broad" nor too narrow.

How can topic about Bitcoin be way to narrow? I don't get it. You can write about the blockchain technology in essence. You can write about its decentralized nature and why is it important for the world -snip-.

If something like quantum computers do in fact get invented, not only bitcoin but pretty much everything that is online now would not be secure. As far as I know normal currencies use some kind of SHA encryption too.

What a creative idea.
For starters explaning the nature and essence of bitcoin would be good. The network, how it is maintained (miners) how it is sustained in price (block halving).
If there is time left compare bitcoin with some traditional payment system. Weigh the pro's and the cons etc.
Thanks everyone, although I at first had Bitcoin related topic in my mind for extended essay, I felt it might be a bit too broad to include in 4k words. Hence I chose random numbers, provably fair(compared it to other RNGs etc) to be specific.

The most important thing to focus on Bitcoin is basically the Blockchain itself and how it does to allow decentralisation ,the possible attacks against it and migration techniques. With Blockchain, you have to talk about the mining process and how Bitcoin nodes helps to enforce the rules. You can also focus on quantum computing and explain how ECDSA can be compromised and how to migrate the threat.
