I was watching live transmition of the ongoing referendum. Lot (and I mean it) of people in que waiting to vote despite the ongoing military assault by western forces. Such hudge participation I did not see even during the referendum in Romania to impech their president.

VITALY PORTNIKOV: Restoring the Soviet Union is Putin’s minimum objective, he moves on central Europe after that.
The plan is unfeasible because achieving it will be followed by the collapse of Russia, according to the Ukrainian journalist and political commentator.
Putin has a great desire to occupy all of Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Moldova, Belarus and other former Soviet republics, Portnikov writes in his commentary on Gordonua.com. Restoration of the Soviet Union–is the minimum program for Putin, he will carry out further aggression in central Europe. Putin’s Plan and its environs consists of several points: “First, the restoration of the Soviet Union; second, to return to the situation of the Yalta conference of 1945 when the USSR controlled the countries of Central and Eastern Europe. Third, restore Russian influence in Asia through cooperation in China,” Portnikov stated.
But Putin has not yet made a final decision, because in Moscow there is a continued confrontation between two opposing groups and the Russian President hasn’t decided on the [final] strategy, concludes the journalist.
“We need to understand that in the Kremlin there is a conflict of opinion between the conditional “hawks” and the “doves.” The “hawks” believe that Russia must achieve recognition as a superpower through any means possible, including the continuation of aggression against Ukraine. They are convinced: the Putin regime will not be subjected to any suffering by the West. The “doves” are convinced that they have to act so that there is no external or internal threat to the regime. They are very well aware that within Russia itself, the processes could now begin that will create significant economic and political difficulties for the ruling elite, that from one stone to the next in the regime will not be left unturned,” Vitaly Portnikov says.
According to Portnikov, the Kremlin’s contradictory statements reflect this struggle between the “hawks” and the “doves” precisely. Few people are able to understand the real plans of Russian President Vladimir Putin and his inner circle.
“Putin only makes it look as if he made up his mind about Ukraine a long time ago. In realty, he also has his doubts about acting in accordance with the principle of “two steps forward and one step back.” This is his psychology: Putin is not a military man, but an intelligence service operative. Such people always act very carefully, unwittingly not wanting to, they weigh the possible risks already on a subconscious level.”
Vitaly Portnikov believes that Putin is now fluctuating between the two positions. “What he chooses–a victory frenzy followed by the collapse of Russia or a victory of common sense with the possibility of saving and modernizing the state,– I don’t know. But take note: the logic of empire collapse–and Russia is exactly at this stage now, suggests that the people who are currently at the helm, are making exactly the kind of choices that facilitate the disappearance of the empire,” he announced.
Therefore, the restoration of the USSR and Russia’s further advance into Europe will not succeed, the journalist states:
“This is an unworkable plan. The ‘doves’ among the Russian leadership believe that this approach will lead to the disintegration of the Russian Federation into many independent states. The ‘hawks’ sincerely believe that Russia, with its commodity-dependent economies, outdated army, and the lack of political management of the system, at the regional level can become a superpower.”

According to Information Resistance data, pro-Russian extremists are conducting an intense propaganda campaign amongst the population in Luhansk and Donetsk Oblasts [regions]. Its purpose is to force citizens to take part in the so-called “referendum” to ensure the split of Ukraine.
The separatists are trying to give the impression that during the “referendum,” Russia will be able to deploy “peacekeeping forces” on the territory of Ukraine, in order to help stabilize the situation in the region, as their main argument in their attempt to convince the people.
About the fact that Russia is itself fueling the flames of civil war in Ukraine, and that the actions taken by the separatists themselves are destabilizing the situation in these regions, there is only silence.
At the same time we’d like to note that, throughout last week, the so-called Russian “expert community” (e.g. the “Gazprom” funded Moscow Strategic Culture Foundation, the Academy of Geopolitical Problems, the Center of Strategic Conjuncture etc.) began actively promoting the idea that a Russian “peacekeeping operation” is strongly needed on the territory of Ukraine.
The main premise in this case is that a “peacekeeping operation” should be conducted by Russia without any consent from the UN (United Nations), as the involvement of the UN supposedly allows the West “to seize the initiative” and to move their troops into Ukraine after receiving a UN mandate. But, as you know, Russia’s membership in the UN Security Council is absolutely unjustifiable, because this country is the aggressor, so it does not allow the UN Security Council to make any efforts in the resolution of the crisis in Ukraine, including carrying out peacekeeping operations by third parties.
Theoretically, Putin has two options to conduct a “peacekeeping operation:” to carry it out under the auspices of the SCO [Shanghai Cooperation Organization] or the CSTO [Collective Security Treaty Organization].
Currently the first option is not possible, because China, as a member of the SCO, would clearly not agree to this kind of global adventure.
What about Moscow’s pocket union, otherwise known as the CSTO? As it’s well known, Putin is currently applying increased pressure on the presidents of the satellite countries. It’s worthwhile remembering the recent military exercises of the Russian Armed Forces, where the question of the use of nuclear weapons was discussed under the personal leadership of Putin, with the presidents of Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan in attendance.
The president of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko, who has not previously supported Russian aggression against Ukraine, has suddenly and inexplicably changed his rhetoric. This change of position miraculously coincided with the message that Russia is ready to give Belarus a $2 billion loan in order to replenish its foreign exchange reserves.
However, the CSTO has no legal grounds for “peacekeeping” in Ukraine, as Ukraine is not a member of the organization. Article 3 of the Agreement on the CSTO peacekeeping operations provides that the organization can perform such activities based on their own decisions only on the territory of the CSTO member states. In the case of non-member countries of the CSTO, approval from the UN Security Council must be obtained first.
This means that any attempt by Russia to move its troops into Ukraine under any pretext, whether alone or in an “alliance” with its satellites, will mean direct military aggression against sovereign Ukraine, or rather the second stage of aggression after Crimea.
