Well, I understand the risk associated with paying for being lucky if the buyer can crack the password with hashcat (or maybe another advanced technology?) Why the buyers look for the wallets which has the latest transaction before 2014?

One of the easiest way on earning money out of those wallet.dat's that have lost passwords.Pretty sure that they've already done as much as they can to open up their own wallets but still fail and now
they do come up into this idea for at least on them to make money and for those people who are fool who do believe that they can easily crack those did buy these files  and end up on regretting
because they cant just open it. 

It does not necessarily have to have a balance at the present time but rather has a record of currencies in the past, for example, if you are lucky you can get a lot of altcoins, some hard forks, and other free gifts.
Also, guessing the password will not be that difficult if the wallet is empty.
Generally, it's gambling to get something that might not happen so I don't recommend it.

If I have the same mindset as the owner of these files, I'll just create the same thing, from creating files with wallet.dat file type and upload on some online shop and create noise in any crypto community forum regarding the .dat files and let anyone buy the damn thing. And anyone can do the same.

Yes, this is just a waste of time.

The sellers if they can make money cracking the passwords, they've done it already so there's no use to them to keep those and that's why they're selling it.

So at least, they can earn from it.

Well.. There's a reason why people would let go of those files, and that is bc they have deemed it useless so I don't really see the point of this.

It's either op has actual wallet.dat with funds and private keys in it but it was too difficult to crack or that there's something wrong with it like having no private keys so there's no way to spend those funds. If it's the former, then those two also applies to the one you are gonna be exchanging with...

Yes, and I don't know why people are willing to take the risk and buy those 'wallet.dat' anyways. Probably those who are going to fall for this might think that there is an easy money here, but they are all wrong.

This is just like gambling. Putting your best effort and ending zero results. Might as well do nothing, right? Are there people who actually tries to unlock these? Hoping that it has balance?

I think that the better option is to avoid them. Those wallets are either broken, either empty, so the effort is useless.
