I think holding altcoins is only good if you are sure of the value of the coins you have. I have a lot of coins in my wallet that although they are still in the market, their value is ridiculously low and will only be sold at less than a dollar. Sometimes, its profitable to just sell your coins immediately after receiving it rather than holding and waiting for it to rot.

I have learned my lessons the hard way. When I was new here I have earned and invested in some promising project (which I think will have a long term potential). And ended up losing thier value down to even multiple folds compared to their ICO price as time goes by. Take note that wise investors come and go, and jumps from project to project to earn.

This is a lesson that I learnt at least two years ago. 99% of the altcoins are hopeless, as they don't have any real life usage. Holding them for long-term is not recommended. You will get a fair idea if you follow the development news. If the project is going to fail, then you will get enough hints in the first six months. And that is the time when you should make your exit.

A typical situation in the cryptocurrency world of shit-coins. I, too, fell into a similar unpleasant incident, I did not corny keep track of the news of several coins that announced the swap.
As a result, I lost a few hundred dollars for each coin. It is quite difficult to follow all this variety of coins received from different types of activities.

Don't hold some good but random altcoins for a long time. If you still want to hold then don't leave their telegram group or other social accounts, check updates on a regular basis. Because if you just hold and keep it in a wallet for 2 years then who knows after 2 years your coin's value may turn into zero value, because of the swap!

I lost many coins because of swap things! Recently Insolar is swapping their token, I did not know about it, because I have been holding for two years but did not care enough as the price was very low! Today I was checking the Coinmarketap android app and saw Insolar coin increased by 530% but their ticker is XNS when I knew it was INS! So, I joined their telegram and get the updates about the swap! Unfortunately, If I fail to swap on time then all of the value of my holding coins will be zero! So, except Bitcoin, Ethereum, don't trust any coin for just buy and hold for a long time, rather keep updating yourself!

Same here. I lost many coins because of these swap thing. Naturally I don't  like to swap any coin basically because of the procedures involved in it.

The only coin am happy holding today is Atomic Wallet Coin (AWC). Even despite swapping to Bep2, the Erc20 AWC is still much valuable as holders of it can still trade on exchange or swap for AWC Bep2.

If you are telling for random altcoins than I will support. Another main reason is project roadmap before buy any coin. All token hasn't future plans to swap own coin, so by whitepaper you can confirm it before buy token for long time. Even I don't want to gathering to seap for few tokens that I got in bounty rewards.

You are so right . One of the reason why these new coins is very dangerous is because of these swaps that just comes at will. If you are really following them, you won't know what's going on. It's always good to trade your coins and in case you invest what you can't afford to lose , make sure you give it the time needed so will be able to know the next move on any coin you are holding.

I think investors should take care about those things because the coins swap is regularly happening in crypto market because of changing their blockchain platforms or launching own blockchin. So if we are a investors then we have to check the details about the coins status and prices daily or weekly base otherwise we will lose our funds if anything happens like that. So we have to take care those things.
Losing our valued tokens that we have been working for a long time is very much possible if we fail to make updates from them. As an investor, we have to keep track the details every now and then of all the tokens that we are keeping in our wallets. It's good to hold potential tokens but we should not let them just sleep in our wallets for a long time without any updates from them because if we do, we might wake up in the morning seeing all of them turns into zero value.

On a sincere note, swapping of tokens has dealt with many investors who wishes to hold for long term, and the worst thing is, after swapping is done there is nothing that can be done about it. This also justifies the fact or the reason why most investors or users who wishes to hold long term tends to go for projects that are already on their own blockchain or preferably top altcoins. On the other hand, Information is also powerful which is why no matter the type of altcoin you are holding, visiting the group of the said altcoins once in a while matters or if possible setting your email to always receive notifications from them. I believe this will go a long way in reducing sad aftermath stories.

Like you, I suffered a similar loss. Holding a random coin long term is not a good idea. Because they doing new update, swap suddenly so it’s hard to follow everyday their new updates. I think many people in the crypto community have had this experience in some way. From here I learned that if you hold a coin, you must know about the regular update of that coin. You have to keep track of your investment. Otherwise a huge loss, waiting for you.

You aren't the first to experience this and probably won't be the last. Making our investment security our number one priority is something many Investors take for granted that's why issue like this come up every now and then. Assuming you're not comfortable staying in the telegram group due to the numerous spam and off topic discuss, you can follow other social media channels of the project that way you won't be left behind Incase of any development. Telegram channel is a more preferable news update medium.

Also, if I'm not mistaking we have service providers that offer this kind of service where information relating to upgrades, blockchain swapping and exchange listing of different project are been posted daily. Following this channels will save you the stress of experiencing similar situation.

Holding for a long time is a choice, looking on it most of the time is what we need to do. In your case, you just let your investment to keep outdated and never intend to do anything but to store it and hoping for an easy money. That is the most idiotic action you could do in terms of long term investing.

Depends on what altcoin you are talking about, sure you may not want to hold something very low and not really liked for a long time and I can understand that, but if you are holding big ones like ethereum for example that means you can do it and you actually should do it. It is just a way you could potentially make money and that is kind of the whole point of holding long term as well. If you can hold bitcoin for long term, you can hold ethereum for long term.

There are some others as well for long term too but everyone should check those for themselves, I just shared ethereum since it is second ranked biggest coin of all time and highest ranked altcoin right now so that was obvious but there are few out there which you can hold for long term as well.

Not all altcoins will be going to downfall, there are some that have the potential to hold. I will look into it first before deciding to hold or not.
I'm not a bounty dumper especially if I saw that projects are really good. I can extend my patient and wait until the moon will come and harvest all my profit.

I have so many shit token in my Ethereum wallet but I let them sleep until the price is reasonable for me. All of these are depends on you, if you sell under the ICO price you will maybe lose profit.
You're right, altcoins like ethereum, BNB, BCH, BSV, and others are altcoins that are worth holding back. however, I only hold altcoin which is very potent and I control it. maybe there are some coins that I sell late, and now it has become a meaningless asset in MEW that I have. yeah, maybe altcoin like that shouldn't be held in the long run.

This happened to me and I really regret that I have too much confidence that I would gain a good profit through my holdings in time without exerting too much effort. I wish I have checked on my holdings' telegram so I got updated but I already lost the opportunity of earning through it. That's a lesson learned for most of us.
No one really knows when the downfall of the market can happen unless it already happened at that time. Maybe because you are overwhelmed on the market that time and because of that you really gain a lot of confidence to hold your tokens for a long time which is you are wishing as of now that you should not do that time. But you already decided it, whatever happens in the future must have plan B, what is the big deal if the token you are holding as of now is a token you are holding for a long time, as long as it is still there, I think it is still good for you because you have a chance to wait for the market to rise up again like the value of your tokens also.

If you are planning to hold altcoins, the best thing you can do is find the ones with the potential of improving in the future. Having lots of holdings with random altcoins is an unhealthy investment. Some of it may stay stagnant till the end while some may soon improve. With the upcoming halving, you should already pick those altcoins that may be pulled by bitcoin's value increase. Make sure that those altcoins are in the toplist so that there would be a higher probability of it increasing as halving takes place sooner. Be wise with your decision and make sure you analyze everything a lot so that there would be no regrets.
Indeed, as an investor, you should know this one because maybe that time the particular project you have supported is good but when the downfall happens, they don't have some other plans to do and they cannot rise up again, sad to say but there are projects like that. So what are you gonna do to know that? You should read the whitepaper and the roadmap.

I agree. It is in need that at the very first place is that you have already recognized and sorted out the good altcoins from the bad ones and determine which is good for long term holding and those that are already needed to be given up for the sake of obtaining profit that can be used to buy some sort of good and potential altcoins. If you do really insist on believing into some sort of random altcoins is that you need to keep yourself updated all the times into the latest happening and updates from the team to be able to keep yourself up into knowing if you already need to give up your hope into such coin to be able to move on into investing or getting into another altcoin that have a lot more potential than the ones you have been holding for a long time. Knowing when to give up is also in need to be able to explore other existing altcoin in the vast market. Do not put all your life into sake just for only one coin you hold for a long time.

If you do hold into something then you should really be at least be updated on what are the progress and developments of the project.
This is actually a lesson learn on your side yet you've missed to swap those coins that you've been holding for too long and with that
mistake you do able to miss on making some good amount of money. This is just on some cases though yet we know that altcoin
market as of these days turns out to be shitty already.
