look at the ETH marketcap which has reached half of the bitcoin marketcap. and that's because the ETH hype is peaking because in a month there will be the merge event or the transition from PoW to PoS. Of course, this hype has various impacts on people's minds. But keep in mind that I guess the highest ETH marketcap at the top of the hype will only reach 75% of the BTC marketcap. and after that it will drop drastically again. because it usually happens. So I'm still holding on to my belief that ETH won't be able to surpass BTC. But I don't know if it's 20 years later. because maybe then there will be more up-to-date digital assets. but the chances are slim. most of the people who are holding ETH right now are waiting to be sold at the height of the hype. and when the hype ends. then people will realize again that BTC is still superior.

This was discussed for many years. And there was a time in the past before the Segwit fork that ETH came very close to surpassing Bitcoin market cap, however it never actually surpassed. Because Bitcoin agrees to activate the Segwit fork.

Will it surpass sometime in the future? Who knows. It might or might not. Right now there is too much uncertainty especially with the merge fork. And there are always tons of bugs that needs to be worked out.
I remember those days as well, that was the only realistic chance that ethereum had of surpassing bitcoin as there was uncertainty about whether segwit will be activated or not and what this will mean for bitcoin, however since then bitcoin has put more and more distance between them and it does not seems as if ethereum has what it is needed to do so, as even if ethereum has reached new ATHs when it comes to fiat terms it has never surpassed its ATH when it comes to bitcoin.

Yes, I will never forget that time as well, they even have terms for it, Flippening and then Rippening (XRP). So obviously, it didn't happen. And now they are it again just because of the merger?, I don't think so.

It's good to see the price hitting $2,000 again, Ethereum investors are going to be happy with that. But please, no need to hype that there will be another Flippening story because they will not get as close to the price of Bitcoin right now, to be honest.

With PoS coming and Gas fee finally getting fixed do you think that Ethereum is capable of overtaking bitcoin? Oh also there will be max supply for Ethereum finally too, or is this expectation of mine way too high.
Many altcoins are willing to take over BTC, but in fact, this is not a simple thing. There are many factors why Bitcoin has always become the best cryptocurrency, the one with the highest market cap, the one with high trust acceptance, and also utility.
Ethereum may have much better improvement after the new launching, however it doesnt mean able to defeat or take over Bitcoin position. As good as EThereum can reach the place, this can only be after Bitcoin, stil depend on Bitcoin market. Ethereum is worthy altcoin and good enough for investment, but it doesn;t mean that it is able to take over Bitcoin.

Your expectation is too high for things that never yet materialized the community will have to see the new Ethereum on POS and fix their unusual high gas fees before we can say that its a threat to Bitcoin's dominance, I shy away from Ethereum for now until the new update and many projects are shifting on other chains, if these projects shifted to Ethereum when the POS comes up then we can start the speculation.

Since Ethereum will turn into a PoS algorithm, then I would really not be surprised if that Ethereum will experience a decrease in Rank,
and Ethereum will also never replace Bitcoin, even though bitcoin is getting harder to mine,
miners will still be mining until all supply of Bitcoin of which only 21 million have been exhausted.
ETH migrating could increase its value though it's definitely isn't that massive increase, but i disagree that ETH migration will instead make it decrease in rank because so far market capitalization of eth is already huge enough compared with the like of BNB.
I think the migration will change nothing in ETH and I agreed that it definitely isn't enough in term of overtaking BTC at all, ETH needs more than just migration I think it requires more trend like the NFTs and metaverse.

If you ask me that question, I would say that your expectation is too high. I think Etherium never can take over btc and I also think Ethereum can be replaced by someone else. Currently, if Ethereum would  take over Bitcoin, it price have to be increase about   13.73x.  I also think for the dominance of bitcoin it also not possible on future.
I would like to say that as gold and silver can never be one and also silver can never take over gold, just like Etherium can never take over bitcoin.  That because they each have specific purposes and features
I do agree that taking over bitcoin is something that ethereum will not do for a long time. I am not saying that it is impossible but that is too much of a goal for it right now. Best thing is to go up together, maybe after 2.0 it could have a good increase that will see them closer.

At some point, it reached to a point where it was just double the marketcap and we believed that it was getting there, with the proof of stake increase, if the gas price stays low when there is a lot of attention then it could actually get enough people to spend their ethereum as well. But that doesn't change the fact that it will be a tough thing to achieve for now.

It's too difficult for bitcoin to be replaced by ethereum to become the number 1 coin, bitcoin has become the destiny of all investors who believe in bitcoin and because no one can control bitcoin, I believe it. and not the reason ethereum will migrate to ethereum 2.0 at a cost will be cheap and will quickly replace bitcoin, the question is not strong enough to knock down bitcoin

Lots of Ethereum supporters hoped for it to overtake Bitcoin but Bitcoin still remained on top. Some coins attempted to replace Bitcoin but it's really hard for them to replace or reach the spot of BTC. Bitcoin has been through a lot and even passed the tests of time so it will be hard for any coin to replace it. Ethereum has huge potential but the gap between them is too big. However, Ethereum's potential will still remain high though it won't replace Bitcoin.

I don't think Ethereum will take over BTC for many reasons including some basic ones for example when we talk about crypto the first thing that comes to mind is bitcoin So bitcoin is a brand which is why if someone invests they look at BTC first and the market cap of bitcoin is huge because of the fixed supply.

This has been a continuous discussion since 2017 as I registered here in the forum. At the first glance, I thought it was possible, but now people are still asking these questions still and probably from that, I already got my answer.
Wasn't ETH moving to PoS been announced and got delayed continuously? I can't get a GPU here in my country due to that, lol. Cheesy

If ETH could dominate over Bitcoin, it should have done plenty of years ago already.

And the question is if there is a chance. Because I don't think so nor there is a strong basis for this other than just false hopes.
Well, you might have to open up your eyes OP and see the impact of Bitcoin in the market as for sure you were able to see the influence of this.

I'm not sure what you have seen but honestly, ETH is just following Bitcoin and whatever happens to Bitcoin it still remains the king of crypto, nothing else.

it is very unlikely that ETH can take over bitcoin, because bitcoin is the first digital currency or crypto asset and has a high value, the total supply of bitcoin is also very limited and almost exhausted in the crypto market, making bitcoin increasingly rare.
although still volatile, bitcoin is one of the most stable cryptocurrencies with a long history making it the most influential asset in other cryptocurrencies such as altcoins and the most consistent investment asset over the last 10 years.

Well IMO, I believe it is not going to happen because Bitcoin is Bitcoin dubbed as a gold standard in crypto and it remains that possession no matter what happens. Anyway, as we observe that the Ethereum development is very active nowadays thats why many people will come up with the idea that it will overthrow Bitcoin someday but I doubt it because Ethereum has its own purpose and usecase, the same as Bitcoin too and they are not on the same scale thats why there no need to compete each other and thats what I believe!

There is no way that Ethereum will ever overtake Bitcoin's value. There are several factors that make Ethereum unable to overtake Bitcoin, firstly, the abundant supply of ETH, the higher popularity of Bitcoin, and the increasingly massive adoption of Bitcoin.

I don't think so, Ethereum will needs massive adoption that would take more than a decade to surpass bitcoin, and that assuming that Bitcoin adoption is slowed down. And I don't think even with the Ethereum 2.0 PoW will not make those possible in near future. My point is that adoption is the key.
So far bitcoin has been adopted by so many institutions even tesla was also buying some bitcoin. The only problem that is still happening with ethereum is if the inflation rate is still very high compared with bitcoin. A wrong design already implemented once ethereum being created with no maximum supply aka infinite inflation. This is creating a never ended pressure to the price of ethereum. That means if the chance for ethereum to compete with bitcoin will be far greater once it will be moving to the POS

The issue of ETH's supply and inflation rate will be solved when ETH merges, just like altcoins are using the POS algorithm today. But for ETH to take over BTC is very difficult, bitcoin is still the largest coin by market capitalization, the market capitalization is twice that of ETH, and every market movement depends on bitcoin including ETH. It is impossible to say that ETH will surpass BTC but this scenario will be very unlikely in the next 10 to 20 years.

The uses of the two are also different, Bitcoin aims to be a currency that can be used as a medium of payment, Ethereum chooses to be a platform that can manage smart contracts.

I think that could hardly happens, ETH even though has increased its dominance lately, still far from bitcoin, moreover it was bitcoin that dictates the market movement, ETH is just like other altcoins in general, it could have high dominance but it's still following heavily in every btc trend. Even though there is a chance that ETH could take over btc if it keeps increasing its dominance by getting the flow of investments from the big management fund and institutional investments.

With PoS coming and Gas fee finally getting fixed do you think that Ethereum is capable of overtaking bitcoin? Oh also there will be max supply for Ethereum finally too, or is this expectation of mine way too high.

Don't expect too much or you will be disappointed when Ethereum used to have the cheapest transaction fee Bitcoin is still dominant and will remain the dominant coin in the market, I don't think gas fee Pos and having a maximum supply can help their cause, Bitcoin has fully established itself and every halving it reached new milestones, this question has been going on since Ethereum launched 7 years ago, but the answers have always been obvious.

Ethereum is indeed the best altcoins, but that doesn't mean Ethereum will ever be able to replace Bitcoin. Although the problem of high gas fees
has been successfully resolved, it will not make Ethereum able to beat Bitcoin. Therefore, since the first time Bitcoin was on the market until now,
Bitcoin has always dominated the market, that's because Bitcoin is invincible. In fact, there have been many other projects that have tried to
replace Bitcoin, but unfortunately none of them have succeeded. So like you said don't expect too high Ethereum will replace Bitcoin, it will only
be disappointing, because it is impossible to happen. Therefore, why do we have to invest in Bitcoin in large percentages compared to other coins,
because Bitcoin is the best crypto, so investing in Bitcoin will give us big profits in the long-term.
