I do not assume so much Ethereum has the chance overtake the Bitcoin in the future. The only way to pass the bitcoin I think the if the ETH has a free transaction on all the cryptocurrency all the investor can send free and faster. The last is the value if the ETC reach the price of the bitcoin I guess there is a chance to overtake the bitcoin. It takes an extended period for the ETH to advance too much the bitcoin

I also think that ETH will overtake Bitcoin as the top currency by 2018 because ETH is the currency of the real floor application and the technology with blockchain smart contracts is the reason it is growing fast
This year we are most likely to see the Ethereum in the first place in terms of capitalization, now we can even see everything falls ETH holds better than everyone, when the growth of the ETH begins faster everything will be restored
I think that in the next two or three years will not overtake, bitcoin is a very strong crypto currency in the minds of people. A couple of years will be seen.
I think Etherum cant overtake the bitcoin because bitcoin is the primary digital currency. Bitcoin has perspective more than the ETC. The price of bitcoin is far away from the amount of the ethereum. Ethereum needs more around USD 8k to overtake the price of the bitcoin. We know that ETC is smart contract token. I guess that Bitcoin Cash can exceed the ETH. But At the end still the bitcoin the most powerful among all the altcoins.

Totally agree with you and I'd like to add at your reasonment:
It should be a wise thing to split the investements in equal parts between Ethereum, Bitcoin
and AltCoins.
I'm relatively new at this so obviously I have strong opinions 
: eth explodes every time BTC dips , check out jan 2018 , BTC started going down around 5th-7th , thats when ETH started going up .... I do expect a BTC pump soon and a ETH drop ( $$$ are moving from 1 to the other with the pumps , weak heads panic sell , wales make $$ , life goes on .

Why would someone want to use a currency that is both slow and expensive, when there are instant and feeless options available? Ethereum is a much better option compared to bitcoin IMO. You should also take a look at Nano(XRB) Instant transactions, ZERO fees.
I think no, bitcoin will always be in the highest position, like gold. But Ethereum takes people toward a new era of decentralization.
When you consider so many tokens are in the ETH network, there could be some gains for ETH later on. Better tech too even considering. and with so many things going in Crypto you never know. big surprises for 2018

Although at present the market shows that now the price of bitcoin and altcoin is falling, I am not sure that next year ethereum will overtake bitcoin. Bitcoin is still strong enough if we look at the price, we can compare with ethereum is still very far adrift. I'm still not sure ethereum can overtake bitcoin because of it. 
In my opinion, although ethereum is an indispensable and useful coin, however, there is practically no chance of overtaking bitcoin values, moreover this year. Despite the fact that ethereum now grows well in price, bitcoin begins to eliminate its shortcomings and thus, will soon and itself begin to grow rapidly in price. It may even be that the price difference between the two will not decrease.
Amazing how long this thread is already. The real battle is at the exchange. Put money where your mouth is and place your bets.
This will surely be a fact when investors of bitcoin will switch to more stable altcoin like ethereum,i want to see how ethereum will manage to be at the top.Bitcoin's investors might be tired and sick with these pumps and dumps thats why they might give up and switch to ethereum.

Ethuram is not overtake bitcoin, because of bitcoin is very great and very popular in the world. also many people believe it. some countries have opened ATM machine for bitcoin.
This is very possible if the bitcoin keeps declining ethereum might replace it,thats why i am holding a lot of ethereum over bitcoin because i smell some flippening between the two,might be in the near future if the lightning network doesnt resolve bitcoin's problem.
