I'm sure that those who are into crypto since last year knew that downloading new mobile wallet from play store can be dangerous, well this is for newbies who just entered crypto space this year, most top popular mobile wallets have fakes built by scammers too, before you download any wallet find its website and download through the link instead

@Furryball this is a nice advice but not all wallets found on play store are fake, though it’s always recommend to do some research before installing any crypto wallet on your phone. Furthermore newbies can yet get scammed if they’re using desktop wallets as it happened in the case of electrum wallets where the wallet showed a PopUp saying people should update it, and by the time people could spread the word that it was a scam it was too late. Hence I would request you to add one more point to the op, that no one should update the wallet from inside it, rather people should go their official site and download the latest update.

I think the google play store is strict in selecting applications, but I can't figure out how the scammer application can pass the google review. It's better to use a wallet that is already trusted and has a lot of reviews if a newbie wants to use any wallet.

If you are downloading a single wallet for a particular token make sure you get the wallet link from a trusted source and also pick a wallet that has had security auditing done on it

Like the TemTum wallet - before release each wallet went through a security audit with BSI in the UK and this report is public - actions like this shows how serious the team take security of the wallet and tokens

much better to do this than trust a random wallet on the play stores which might be stealing your keys

Yeah, not all wallet in app store have pass through the security audit, and for someone who is just downloading for the first time have no way of knowing this things, beside, scammers have developed so much skills that if you are not very careful it will be difficult to differentiate the fake from original, temtum are very serious about security is also the reason why users will have to pass kyc in other to be able to use tem wallet,

most wallet in app store that support multiple asset not sure have such level of security, tem wallet on the other hand don't support multiple coin, so maybe users can check out enjin wallet, it support multiple assets and very secured with such a great user interface.

in addition to the CMC mentioned by several friends above. I also used to look for websites or information about coins or tokens in this forum, precisely on the [ANN] board. much safer, because in this forum is very complete with smart people. besides that you can also ask anything about coins / tokens, will definitely be answered by the team or members here. In addition to fake wallet, which is also dangerous, malware such as cryptojacking, can make data leak and the device does not run normally.

Every good wallets have official websites, coinomi, trust wallet, jaxx, copay, etc so of you are too afraid to trust apps on playstore you should go through their official websites and download but I doubt there are still duplicate/fake apps on playstore

This also has the same risk, clone website of wallets are filled on web so you need to have basic understanding about wallet and private keys and how to verify their signatures to check their legitimacy.

Mobile wallets aren't that secure in the first place. If you're starting out in crypto, it's just fine to use them for a short amount of time, but there's a ton of potential weaknesses with mobile wallets even besides fake download links just due to the fact that they're on a smartphone. If you end up owning a more significant sum of crypto in the future, I would highly suggest you get a hardware wallet or an airgapped computer of some sort to store those funds more securely.

Keeping a desktop wallet would be a notch up in terms of security for most people, but if you go this route, make sure that you verify the GPG key of whatever wallet you're downloading so you can be sure that whatever you've downloaded isn't compromised in any way.

Believe me, if scammers create a fake wallet, then they will surely take care of creating such a fake website. You need to check much deeper and more thoroughly.
The fact that people generally install new unknown wallets on their devices seems incredible to me, because there are so many proven and reliable
wallets of a different nature and format that have been on the market for quite some time. However, people love new products, which means they will have to learn from their own mistakes.

When it comes with the cryptocurrency wallet we should definitely choose the trusted one because it is also for the security of our coins. Mostly some of the new cryptocurrency wallet are usually suspected as scam and if ever you going to use it try to check all feedbacks or the team behind it so you can distinguish that it is safe to use.

Most of the hackers always target the newbie due to having lack of knowledge and experience in the field of cryptocurrency. But, they can still avoid it if they are responsible on making research on a certain thing. Do your own research (DYOR) is always the advice of other member here and even me because if you are good enough on doing it then you will easily determine if the crypto wallet is a scam or fake.

If you going to download a cryptocurrency wallet maybe stick with the trusted and reputable wallet so there's assurance of the safety of your coins.
Researching may require too much time and effort but it is definitely useful because it will give you a better understanding with regards to different crypto wallets. Though sometimes newbies take no notice of how researching can guide them on deciding which wallet can make their funds safe and secured from scammers and hackers. They need to realize that it is our responsibility to protect our funds that's why finding a trustworthy wallet is a must to ensure that hackers won't find an opportunity to exploit our funds and assets.

It is dangerous for real.

The newbies will not understand it if they are doing it for the first time. The apps that are on the play store may look legit because they are not aware of the fake apps. And google doesn't really detect or care at all unless those apps will be reported.

If someone downloaded a wrong app, as a normal process, it will ask for the private key but you will be curious why is it asking for that if the usual thing they'll do is to give you the PK instead of them asking for it.

I would also suggest they search on coinmarketcap for the cryptocoins they wish to download. It's much safer to get their wallets and websites this way.
Not really a good idea to get them through google, twitter, telegram search due to the numerous fakes that exist.
