Not enough to stem the price decline.  Wonder if they purchase on exchanges or what`s their source of BTC
I'd have to look it up again, but there is a quote from them saying they have a team of people working to source coins. I'd guess anywhere would be reasonable as long as the price was right.

This is correct.  Most large purchases of anything stock, currency, commodity related come from either an exchange if they feel the price is right or from a private party transaction.  For a size that large my guess is they did a private party exchange.

Hey, maybe it was some the of the FBI's stash. Wink

But there won't be another 120 funds like this fund.  How many pure gold funds or ETF's are there?

At least 4 in the U.S. that I know about.  Several more in Europe.  Could be 120 of them.  It would be not unusual or surprising.

At least one in Australia. As Btc value is bid, Btc spending should increase as Btc millionaires are minted.

Some real action again on 9 Jan. 740XBT bought

Very big buy(s).  What I like is pretty much every day there's a minimum of $20,000 going into this trust in NEW money.  I'm way too lazy to check out the average for the last 2-3 months, but it has to be $40,000, ie, 40 BTC's, every day. Go Wall Street...and rich people. Smiley

Do people realize that if there were 120 other funds like SecondMarket with the same BTC holdings, there would not be enough bitcoins to go around?

That's why its only going to take a couple of hand fulls of these type of funds to move the price to  5 figures.

But there won't be another 120 funds like this fund.  How many pure gold funds or ETF's are there?  I think what we'll see is eventually a handful of trusts like this one, maybe the Winklevoss ETF (if SEC -ever- approves it), and then we'll see Bitcoins being added to many alternative asset mutual funds (of which there are easily 100+).  This is best case scenario.  And my hope. Smiley

Except that bitcoin is international. You are just talking about US funds. How about European and Asian funds? What about retirement funds? And the ETF that the Winklevosses are doing should dwarf SecondMarket.

Most stocks are US based, but non-American's are very % holders of US stocks, funds, and ETF's.  I thought the filing for the W twins was suppose to be a $60MM market cap?  I've only skimmed the SEC filing so could be mistaken.  That's about the size of the BIT Trust currently.  I think once Fotress Trust gets going that could be even larger than both though.

Anyone know a licensed appraiser in the US who can create a third party appraisal to document one's net worth that includes assets in the bitcoin blockchain, to satisfy SEC rulings regarding an 'accredited investor'?
SEC requires second market to document all investors in BIT in a very restrictive and non-sensical fashion.

Why don't you just buy bitcoin? Save you a lot of trouble.

Because you can't with retirement funds.

Actually, you CAN buy bitcoins in an IRA today, you don't need a third party like Second Market, and you don't need to be an accredited investor.  Companies like Broad Financial can help you set up an IRA LLC that is wholly owned by your IRA, and which you manage.  The LLC can buy a wide variety of assets, including bitcoins.  You can secure the private keys yourself, and you don't have to pay someone else annual fees to do it for you.

If your IRA LLC that is owned by your Roth IRA, as long as you're age 59 1/2 and follow all the IRA rules, the gains are not taxed.  If bitcoin is successful, this will save you tons of money in taxes!

The inexperienced are trading it! Unbelievable in my view.

I speculate bitcoins need to hit some kind of "terminal value" which will then allow early adopters to spend satoshis.

1 million per Btc would do it for me.
