Its not only the help from Xabi Alonso , also Florian Wirtz has got an huge impact on that the last weeks.
About the race for the title i would say the first 4 or 5 places are still not out of that and there are still a lot of games left in this season.

As you say, Leverkusen can only overtake Bayern Munich at the top of the league if they start to lose their games. I expect them to get there though, as the only two games left in the League stage are against Feyenoord (away) and Slovan Bratislava (home) so they should easily earn at least 4 points, but possibly even 6, in which case, they'd almost definitely end up in the top 8.

Maybe I would say more, with a new coach who was initially quite doubtful by many people, they were able to have a good game and that answered some doubts about Vincent Kompani. In terms of squad, they are the team with the best squad in the Bundesliga in my opinion, so this is something very natural when they can show a very good game. And if I remember correctly, their failure last season was not entirely their fault. The good thing is that Bayern Munich seems to be back to challenge and take back what looks like heritage to them. Leverkusen is still second on the table but I'm not sure if they can defend themselves as the champions of Bundesliga this season.

Although, both Munich and Leverkusen performance can be measured to be in the same level but Bayern Munich seem to be more consistent than Leverkusen. In fact, Leverkusen approached the season with very average performance but I noticed they've improved their game in few previous matches but that doesn't still give them advantage over Bayern Munich.

Still a long time until the games start, I do not think we need to decide on anything right now. Considering the Leverkusen and Dortmund game is on 10th of January, we have like over two weeks until that game starts, so we can just wait for it.

Some question, like what does waiting change, after all we know the teams and how they have done, but the reality is that we can first see some transfers, second we could see someone injured. I know that doesn't happen that commonly, but training injuries are a thing and if that happens then we could potentially just consider this to be a very wild and game changer situation as well. I believe we need to consider how that could make it change and for that reason I believe we need to be careful and wait.
