i just love this, man
50 btc at more or less 7000us$ per bitcoin, is 350000us$ for a forum badge...A FORUM BADGE

never fails to make me smirk, it's amazing, honestly. it's even more cool that many of the donators/vip weren't rich at the very beggining, they just came to the party early, and if i were those guys, man, i probably would've donated too, this community is worth some appreciation...well, maybe not 350000us$ worth of appreciation but definetely something in that range lol

I read the earlier posts and disagree with any notion that 10BTC and 50BTC donations can be justified. Where exactly are all these donations going?

I mean how much of the BTC donated to the forum is needed for hosting? Unless the moderators take some of the donations for salary and/or expenses it means there should be no other expenses. 1x BTC at todays rate of $7000+ would easily cover more than 1 years hosting.

Have any of the moderators actually filed any tax returns for any money received? Where are the donations going and what are those in receipt of them actually doing with them?

Have you guys thought about reducing the donations for VIP/Donator ranks. 10 BTC and 50 seems like a bit too much. Would be a small fortune lol
It's been discussed time after time and the answer to the question is no it's not going to be reduced to equivalent modern day prices as it would be unfair for those that have donated. theymos has also said that the forum doesn't really need the funds to justify lowering it either.

If you donate 10 BTC (which pays for about a month of hosting), you get donator status:

I'd love to be able to donate 10 BTC, but if that's what hosting costs each month, I could probably do more good by helping you find better hosting?  Lol.

Looking at BTC value back on 8/19/2011... has the site considered a membership plan of some sort?  Monthly or annual, with some type of benefits?  Maybe even multiple levels?  Something that would remain fair to those that donated long ago and even any that are able to donate those amounts now/in the future.

I am positive the community would support this site through donations.  I certainly will, without any "donator status" or benefits.  But it's doubtful I could swing 10 or 50 BTC anytime soon.

Bitcointalk doesn't rely on donations anymore, the ads revenue are sufficient tho but any donations will be welcome.
The donator/vip status have some privilege which is mainly changing the name and accessing a hidden subforum.
For the price of these status, nowadays they are overestimated but for people who believe that 1 BTC in 2011 = 1 BTC in 2017 it is the same. Well mathematically indeed but a land or a house built in 1900 will not have the same price as in 2000.

Who in his right mind will donate 10 BTC for Donator status?
There are many people.

and what? 50 BTC for VIP status? are you kidding me?
No, there are some people who have VIP stats. https://bitcointalk.org/donate.html

I can't imagine someone in 2017 will donate 10 BTC to get a 'Donator' title under his name.  Undecided
Claymore did it on April 2017. He became a donator after donated 10 btc to this forum at April, 20th 2017 which costs him $1,308.40*10 = $13,084 .

Thanks to Claymore, the first Donator in quite some time.

Who in his right mind will donate 10 BTC for Donator status? Shocked and what? 50 BTC for VIP status? are you kidding me? I can understand those days when bitcoin prices were low and 10 BTC would make sense but this amount needs to be lowered now.I can't imagine someone in 2017 will donate 10 BTC to get a 'Donator' title under his name.  Undecided

It is hard to be a donator nowadays since the price for 1 bitcoin is almost $5000. This post is posted in 2011 where the value of bitcoin is very low. If I knew this earlier, I could donate but I'm still a freshman at that time. What are the benefits of being a donator?

lol today i wanted to dig out this old post but you beat me to it Cheesy

i guess noone is donating 10 btc anymore, the forum cost got a little cheaper and the hidden sections of bitcointalk are the crypto whale elite.
i wish i could get access to the hidden sections, what nice things i may find there Cheesy maybe infos worth more than 10 btc.

i love that the forum got started by satoshi, i had a dream, satoshi lost the private key to his wallets and killed himself. dont spread the news.

sorry for offtopic. i love bitcointalk and learned alot here. but 10 btc to give away is not on my list for at least 2-5 years. maybe one day....

It is a fact that the value of Bitcoin has risen sharply since 2011. But Bitcointalk also gained value and presence. Considering that AMN and discussion of Altcoin is performed, easy cut is also a risk of fraud. If change the amount of donation, I think that it is necessary to separate Altcoin's topics for safety.

I just seen the "News: Please donate!". I can't donate 10 BTC, but I will donate 1 BTC to show my appreciation, I'm mining off one card, and trying to save for a second card, even one btc is hurting me.

Sending, just for record it will be from 1D4HfK1km47E77f1w8syKHjPghNQQz8djc

Hmmmm. Oddly similar to a post on the first page back in 2011. By similar, I mean exactly the same...!!!

The Bitcoin Forum is a website meant to host free discussion of Bitcoin and related topics. It is operated mainly as a service to the community, and the vast majority of income after expenses is either saved for future expenses or reinvested into the forum or the community. The forum was started in 2009 by Satoshi Nakamoto, the original creator of Bitcoin. It is now managed by theymos, BadBear, Cyrus, and a dedicated team of moderators. Forum finances are managed by theymos.

Several things come to mind straight away. If the real Satoshi Nakamoto started this forum in 2009, did the present administrators get hold of it without interacting with Satoshi? If they had direct dealings with Satoshi then maybe Satoshi can be identified. And how did these present administrators get hold of the forum? Was donated to them or did they buy it? Anyone who knows please post here.

Wow... this forum is very lucrative for the present administrators. They have received thousands of bitcoins in donations! The number of donors listed here show it: https://bitcointalk.org/donate.html

This is totally unnecessary. Focus on what you came here for and let the great guys do their jobs. 162 Bitcoin is incredibly small compare

I was thinking about the same exact thing!
What did theymos do to obtain Satoshi's trust? What did he to deserve this forum? Why Satoshi gave this forum to him?

I think theymos should say what happened in those days when Satoshi left this forum forever, in order to add more transparency to this forum...

Focus on what brought you here and let the great  administrators continue doing their excellent jobs.
162 Bitcoin is incredibly small compare to the quality of services they render to the forum and Bitcoin.
Wish they could dedicate a special day every year to raise more funds.
This is arguably the best forum & possibly the best website on the Internet.

No. There was also Sirius which helped Satoshi immensely with the Bitcoin project in 2009. My knowledge on the history is limited because I was new at the time, but I believe they both trusted theymos to take care of it in 2010. Sirius gave control of the domains to Cobra. theymos and Cyrus run the forum now. That link appears to be a bit behind the times as BadBear isn't an administrator anymore, he doesn't appear to be even a moderator. He last posted in late 2016 and his account was last active on here in spring 2017.

Satoshi left the project over 7 years ago and there's no point in identifying him anymore. Sirius, who was responsible for porting the code to Linux and getting a lot of early interest (even more than Satoshi) eventually decided to leave the project in the hands of those who were interested in taking it further. The forum grew a lot from 2010 to 2013 and even though the signal to noise ratio hasn't always been the best, theymos and Cyrus have done a great job given the limitations of the software. theymos also runs the subreddit which has grown quite well over the years.

It wasn't donated or purchased. Responsibility was transferred to them. Responsibility is NOT a donation, it comes with requirements. One doesn't simply "purchase" responsibility.

A significant portion of forum funding was used for development of a new forum. At present, the donation address only has 162.64 BTC. Inflows of ad revenue I believe mostly pay the moderators. It's not much but it's better than nothing. Also, there's likely to be future developments and moderation required, and it is important that there is enough funding for decades (if not centuries) of perpetuation of the community, mods, admins, etc. "lucrative" is a loaded word in the context you used.
