Future Tech & Continuing Controversy: Lifting The Haze Around 5G

PART II

Moving Into The Unknown

Davis raises concern over studies that have unequivocally demonstrated negative impact on sperm count of men who keep their phones in their pockets, and research that has suggested connection between breast cancer, and women who keep their phones in their bras. She also highlights laboratory tests on rodents which saw prenatal exposure to RFR result in reduced hippocampal development in later life — which raises concerns over wireless technology exposure for women during pregnancy, and for young children who are very much still developing. At present, we do not have any evidence that sub- guideline exposure to RFR poses a health threat, however we cannot entirely rule out the possibility that some risk may exist.

On the topic, the World Health Organisation assert that: “A number of studies have investigated the effects of radio-frequency fields on brain electrical activity, cognitive function, sleep, heart rate and blood pressure in volunteers. To date, research does not suggest any consistent evidence of adverse health effects from exposure to radio-frequency fields at levels below those that cause tissue heating.” This can be clarified when we imagine the microwave — a machine that functions through high powered RFR that has been specifically tuned to heat water. Wireless devices operate at a much lower power level. The WHO go on to state that “Further, research has not been able to provide support for a causal relationship between exposure to electromagnetic fields and self-reported symptoms, or “electromagnetic hypersensitivity”. This refers to the small cross-section of society who report physical symptoms in relation to RFR exposure.

Making Responsible Assessments

In response to the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classifying radio-frequency electromagnetic fields as possibly carcinogenic to humans, the WHO established guidelines for RFR exposure in terms of Specific Absorption Rate in 2011. Of particular ongoing concern is investigation into the possibility that device exposure could lead to the development of brain tumours. A large retrospective study, titled Interphone, and coordinated by the IARC, found no evidence that mobile phone use led to cancer over a 10 year period, but Davis points out that in terms of carcinogenicity, the manifestation of tumors caused by the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima was not fully evident until 40 years after the fact. With such widespread use of such young technology, the data to understand cause and effect simply does not exist yet. Specifically in relation to 5G, Davis shared that: “Unfortunately, we’re being sold something for which there are no standards.” As damming as this may sound, she is both pragmatic, and technologically tooled up!

On a regulatory level, Davis is seeking the development of telecommunication technology that presents lower potential risk, alongside increased scrutiny and regulation of new and existing technologies. On an individual level, Davis praises pre-emptive measures such as the use of wired networking — as opposed to wireless — in nurseries, schools, and colleges. She encourages parents to keep devices away from young children, and adults to minimise their exposure as far as possible, via steps such as not carrying your phone when it is not in use, and using loudspeaker or hands-free sets with phones. She asks: “Do you really want to have to prove that there’s a significant increased risk of brain cancer, before taking steps to reduce exposures, to prevent that harm from happening? That’s really the question. How much evidence do we need, before taking precautionary steps?” Fundamentally ,as we move forwards into the next phase of our planet’s technological evolution, we can certainly be excited about the new wave of potential that is about to unfold, but we must also ensure that our science is given the momentum and resources to catch up.

Future Tech & Continuing Controversy: Lifting The Haze Around 5G

PART I

Did I hear someone mention 5G? These days those two little characters certainly comprise a push-button topic — one that is likely to elicit heated debate within any social circle. With so much swirling furor on social media, it can be tricky to discern what lies at the core of the issue. To try to bring a little clarity to the table, we’ve been digging in to what we really know about 5G, and why so many are keen to see it succeed, or fail. Wherever you sit on the spectrum, from 5G fan to foe, perhaps something we’ve dug up will shed new light, and allow you to feel empowered as wireless technology continues to evolve.

The Next Generation Of Inter-connectivity

With 5G comes the fifth generation of telecoms communication, the anticipated follow-up to 4G, which rolled out in 2009. It promises to be faster, more reliable, capable of serving a far larger number of devices, with greater coverage. To give a sense of the speed 5G users will be able to expect, the Consumer Technology Association highlighted that it will mean being able to download a two-hour movie in just 3.6 seconds, in comparison to 6 minutes via 4G, or an agonising 26 hours back in the days of 3G. This entails not only greater bandwidth — the speed with which data can be transferred — but reduced latency, which is the minute delays between individual data transfers. All of this will be achieved through the combination of several advancements, and will facilitate not only faster internet for individual users, but enhanced potential for modern tech such as smart homes, driverless cars, and a vast ecosystem of connected IoT (Internet of Things) devices.

The Specifics Of 5G Technology

While 4G base stations must constantly switch between transmitting and receiving modes, 5G base stations will be able to both send and receive data at the same time. They will also harness MIMO technology, which stands for “multiple-input, multiple-output”, allowing one base station to talk to multiple devices simultaneously, without — once again — having to constantly switch between them. Alongside MIMO comes the integration of beamforming, or directing wireless signals directly at the devices in question, reducing local interference. These kinds of innovations, alongside the switch to “millimeter waves”, collectively contribute to a super speedy network that requires only 10% of the power of it’s predecessor.
Those millimeter waves are one of the main elements of controversy within the 5G debate. Previous telecom iterations harnessed radio waves that sat within bands under 6GHz. Millimeter waves, in contrast broadcast at higher frequencies, between 30 and 300 GHz. The other aspect of 5G that is causing a fair amount of concern is that new base stations will be far closer together. Millimeter waves struggle with getting through solid objects, so 5G will require a new network of “small cells” — or miniature base stations — that will be required at about every 250 meters throughout dense urban areas. To frame worries about 5G, it’s important to step back and view the long-term controversy surrounding wireless technology as a whole. While 5G related headlines may be easy to spot in today’s realm of information sharing, concerns about radio-frequency radiation, or RFR, are certainly nothing new.

What’s The Worry With Wireless?

All wireless technology relies on a form of radiation to function. When we think of radiation, we might imagine the atomic bomb, but the term encompasses everything across the electromagnetic spectrum of wave frequencies — from low wave radio frequencies, through microwaves, infrared, the visible light spectrum, ultraviolet, X-rays, and finally gamma rays at the serious end of the spectrum. Where each wave type sits on this scale is dictated by it’s frequency. Most of the spectrum is non-ionizing, while those sitting at the top of the spectrum are ionizing — meaning that they hold the capacity to split electrons away from atoms, thereby causing cellular damage. Ionizing forms of radiation span from the UV rays that cause us sunburn at the beach, through to gamma rays which arise from the radioactive decay of atomic nuclei. Millimeter waves sit far down this spectrum — below even the waves that allow us to see when in daylight. So, what’s the concern? In reality, it lies less in what we do know about RFR, than it does in what we don’t know.

Epidemiologist and writer Dr. Devra Davis can perhaps be attributed with leading world efforts towards understanding the potential hazards of RFRs better. She has a notable array of collaborations under her belt, including with the World Health Organisation, the United Nations, the International Monetary Foundation, and the Bill Clinton administration. Today she serves at the helm of Environmental Health Trust, an organization that seeks to draw valuable attention to man-made health threats. In this role, she has been instrumental in the enacting, collating, and calling for, research on wireless technology. As she frequently expresses in her lectures all over the world, due to our unprecedented adoption of RFR dependent technology, we are, scientifically speaking, failing to keep up with our own technology — in terms of understanding possible impacts. She highlights the lack of data available, and the challenges of studying such a rapidly evolving situation.

Enlisting Gamers In The Name Of Science

When it comes to problem solving, sometimes many minds are greater than some. This was the concept behind the creation of Foldit — a crowdsourced computer game that allows players to contribute to important scientific research. Back in 2011, Foldit players made history by solving a molecular puzzle that had stumped scientists for a decade. It took them — wait for it — only ten days! The research, which was a vital step within efforts to develop new ways to tackle the AIDS virus, was solved thanks to the gamification of protein structure prediction. Today, Foldit has asked it’s players to shift their attention to combatting the Coronavirus. Several Coronavirus challenges in, those taking on the current task are endeavouring to design a protein that might halt the “cytokine storm”. This is the detrimental overreaction of the body’s immune response that can be triggered by Covid-19, which can result in organ damage, and potentially become life threatening.

Virtually Enhancing Our Understanding Of Mental Illness

One of the greatest challenges in terms of mental health has always been establishing mutual understanding of conditions that only present inwardly. Game development studio Ninja Theory set about turning the tables with their Norse Mythology themed dark fantasy game, Hellblade. Players control the character Senua, who suffers from psychosis. With their assistance, Senua must navigate through stunning landscapes, and fearsome battles, while in the grips of hallucination, delusion, and voices in her head. The exquisitely detailed game environments and complex puzzles make for stimulating gaming. Meanwhile, Ninja Theory worked closely with neuroscientists, mental health specialists, and people suffering from the condition, to give players a real insight into what the experience of psychosis is like.

Side-Stepping Censorship In Virtual Spaces

In a world where freedom of information is a luxury only enjoyed by some, a collaborative project has set out to even the score in the least expected of places! Minecraft holds the crown as the best selling video game of all time. Within it, players explore a blocky, procedurally-generated 3D world, mining materials, constructing environments of their own, and diving into combat. As of 2019, over 112 million monthly active players were delving into this evidently captivating virtual world. Perhaps this is why Reporters Without Borders decided to collaborate with game developers BlockWorks, DDB Berlin, and MediaMonks, to create The Uncensored Library. This spectacularly grand structure exists not in the real world, but in the world of Minecraft. It exists to house censored documents as an attempt to circumvent censorship in countries without freedom of the press. At present, the library holds banned reporting from Mexico, Russia, Vietnam, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt, with a virtual wing dedicated to each country.

Transforming Lives Through Virtual Experiences

PART I

Many of us love to unwind in our down time by stepping into one virtual world or another. Whether we prefer to build our own reality in Minecraft, leap about with friends playing Wii Sports, or blow off steam immersed in Grand Theft Auto, we tend to think of gaming as a guilty pleasure, or a fun form of self indulgence! There are, however, an impressive array of organisations and individuals all around the world who are on a mission to do more with virtual environments. Some are breaking down cultural barriers, while others are aiming to positively impact mental health. Some are using digital realms to fight oppression, and inspire future generations. Read on to discover how much more our affection for gaming has to offer than simple entertainment!

Harnessing The Power Of Gaming

Back in 2010, a game designer called Jane McGonigal stood on a Ted stage to give a talk about changing the world through virtual play. McGonigal had been working on a series of projects with the Institute For The Future, with the goal to “make it as easy to save the world in real life as it is to save the world in online games”. Some impressive statistics were serving as sparks to drive her mission forward. She drew on data of the time from the immensely popular online game, World Of Warcraft. “So far,” she explained, “collectively all the World of Warcraft gamers have spent 5.93 million years solving the virtual problems of Azeroth.” To give this number a sense of scale, McGonigal shared that 5.93 million years ago was just about when our earliest primate human ancestors stood up. Undeniably, that was a lot of time spent by humanity within just one virtual world! The question is, what could be achieved if all of that time spent could somehow be harnessed?

Now, that wasn’t the only incredible number McGonigal had come armed with. She spoke of Malcolm Gladwell’s theory that 10,000 hours is the number of applied hours that must be put into something in order for us to become an expert. As it happened, at the time of the Ted Talk, the average young person in a country with a strong gamer culture was spending 10,000 hours playing online games before they reached the age of 21. McGonigal was fascinated by what gamers were actually becoming expert at, and while developing some games of her own — each with a moral mission — she developed some inspiring theories. McGonigal concluded that gamers are virtuosos at four things: the first being urgently optimism; the second being weaving a tight social fabric; the third being working hard, when given the right work; and the last was finding epic meaning — being attached to awe-inspiring missions and human planetary-scale stories. Sounds good, right? Apparently McGonigal was on to something, because since her talk, virtual spaces have been springing up with just these kinds of save the world agendas behind them.

Fostering Human Connection Through Play

In the second Sudanese Civil War, a couple fled Bor, making a 200 mile journey to refuge. Along that arduous quest towards safety, their son Lual Mayen was born. Lual was destined to begin his life as a refugee, but he was also destined to use his experiences to change the lives of others, through gaming. After building his first video game in a refugee camp, Lual travelled the world speaking about the power of video games for peace, and created the gaming company Junub Games. This year, their master work to date — a game called Salaam — is set to launch. Salaam is a high-tension runner game that puts players in the shoes of a refugee forced to flee a war torn region. The game aims to humanise refugees, and positively shift mindsets. Simultaneously, when players purchase food, water, and medicine in Salaam, they are also providing supplies to people living in real-world refugee camps.

      The Human Appetite for Aesthetics

      PART II

Beauty Makes Us Perceive More Positively

Designing objects beautifully is a cause worth investing in, thanks to the way we are inclined to respond. Not only do we feel drawn to things that we find attractive, but we are also more positive about their function. Researchers Masaaki Kurosu and Kaori Kashimura, from the Hitachi Design Center, first observed this effect in 1995. They found that test subjects were more likely to perceive something as easy to use if they found it aesthetically appealing, while their perception did not always correlate with actual ease of use. Don Norman also highlighted this impact in his book, Emotional Design, pointing out that we tend to reach for the most aesthetic options as we make our way through life, while being less likely to use and accept things that lack visual appeal. We in fact forgive flaws in things that are beautiful.

      When Beauty Overwhelms

For a small number of people, the power of beauty can backfire. The Stendhal Syndrome is a psychosomatic condition that some experience when exposed to objects or phenomena of great beauty. Symptoms include rapid heartbeat, fainting, confusion and even hallucinations. The condition was named after French author Marie-Henri Beyle, better known by his pen name Stendhal, who experienced it when on a trip to Florence. Historical account of people fainting while taking in Florentine art are renowned, but Stendhal was the first to define it:

“Absorbed in the contemplation of sublime beauty … I reached the point where one encounters celestial sensations … Everything spoke so vividly to my soul. Ah, if I could only forget. I had palpitations of the heart, what in Berlin they call ‘nerves’. Life was drained from me. I walked with the fear of falling.”

Italian psychiatrist Graziella Magherini studied the phenomena in Florence, observing more than a hundred similar cases the 1970s. Cult-status Italian cinematic director Dario Argento would go on to portray the Stendhal Syndrome in his 1996 horror film of the same name. In a striking scene, the protagonist observes a painting of a waterfall, before beginning to hallucinate, and moving into the painting — drenched under the fast moving water. The most recently recorded instance of Stendhal Syndrome took place in 2018, when a Florence visitor suffered a heart attack while admiring Sandro Botticelli’s The Birth of Venus.

Can You Like Something Without Wanting It?

In recognition of the profound impact that beauty has on us, studies increasingly suggest that the pleasure derived from observing the highly aesthetic is akin to that induced by food, drugs, and sex. This has led to an exploration into whether art could be used as a substitute in the treatment of addicts. Julia Christensen, of the Cognitive Neuroscience Research Unit at London University, took interest in the way that philosophers, scientists and poets describe reaching a positive state through creative processes — a “flow” state, using the commonly harnessed term — and postulated that unhealthy pleasure-seeking behaviours might be something that we can replace with undamaging pleasure-seeking behaviours. Namely, observing, and creating beauty in the form of art. Whether we are hooked on social media, have a worry-some shopping habit, or are grappling with substance addiction, seeking out beauty — that which doesn’t come with a compulsive hook to buy or consume — may be a useful tool. Christensen rather pleasingly refers to this intention as “choice hygiene”.

How can we bring more beauty into our lives? A vision of the financial freedom to pursue such passions is what led us to develop the revolutionary GRAYLL App. GRAYLL harnesses the power of AI to deliver exponential profits to it’s users — making wealth creation without time investment accessible to everybody. Whether you head out into the world in search of beauty, or choose to create your own, with GRAYLL you can sculpt a life that gives you that all-important aesthetic hit! The Human Appetite for Aesthetics

      PART I

From being caught off guard by a particularly beautiful view; to marvelling over an exquisite piece of jewellery, architecture, or design: beauty seems to impact us on a deep and personal level. We are captivated by paintings, the sleek lines of fast cars, or an individual that we deem highly attractive. Our pulse increases, our pupils dilate, and we experience a light flush. So, what exactly is it that makes us feel drawn to, touched by, and in awe of beauty? Culturally, we have the instinct to beautify ourselves, and adorn ourselves with decorative details. What is it that makes us so obsessed with the aesthetic, and what does it mean within our day to day lives? Let’s delve into the magnetic nature of beauty, and how we can harness it as part of our human experience.

      The Primitive Aesthetic

In the digital era, we always focus on the idea that first impressions are everything. While the concept of marketing might be a relatively recent human invention, it would seem the power of first impressions is far more primal. Within the natural world, logic stands that animals would be attracted to others within their species displaying the healthiest physical traits. The tallest and strongest — those with the best symmetry — offering the most superior genetic material for reproduction. We can see among the animal kingdom that the desire to self-enhance is not solely human either. Just as we style our hair, put on makeup, and wear our finest clothes, birds have shown us their own drive to self-improve. The bearded vulture is a fascinating example, as it rubs it’s head and neck in iron rich soil to change the colour of it’s white plumes to red. Those with the brightest colouring enjoy social favour as a reward!

When we humans look outward to beautiful objects and places, it would seem that our primal instincts are still at the helm. Ellen Dissanayake, an anthropologist at the University of Texas, believes that we appreciate created beauty, and the discipline, energy, and talent behind it, because they indicate an adaptive nature. “Artistic production entails effort, and effort is rarely expended without some adaptive rationale,” she explains. In this sense, the pleasure we feel when we behold something beautiful is connected to our baser instincts. Likewise, our desire to possess beautiful things enhances our own primal sense of worthiness.

The Magic Of The Golden Ratio

It is impossible to discuss beauty without touching on the Golden Ratio. In mathematical terms, two quantities are in the Golden Ratio if their ratio is the same as the ratio of their sum to the larger of the two quantities. Expressed formulaically, this means a+b is to a, as a is to b. The Golden Ratio has been studied and obsessed over since the days of Ancient Greek mathematician Euclid, and it has long been associated with beauty. From it, the Golden Spiral and the Golden Rectangle are formed. When we think of an iconic piece modern design, the iPod might come to mind. Perhaps this is because, as keen observers noticed, the near perfect application of a Golden Rectangle is harnessed in it’s exterior design!

While some dubious claims have been made over the years in regards to the Golden Ratio’s presence, it does indeed appear within nature. The golden ratio can be found in the leaves of phyllotactic plants, and is present at the atomic scale in the magnetic resonance of spins of cobalt niobate crystals — as reported in the journal Science in 2010. Fascinatingly, some believe that the Golden Ratio is the key to human beauty, with those whose faces most mirror the ratio being perceived as the most attractive. Appearing in the work Leonardo da Vinci, Mondrian, Salvador Dali, and even in the music of Eric Satie, it is certainly a concept that has captivated humanity. Adrian Bejan, professor of mechanical engineering at Duke University, believes that our relationship with the Golden Ratio is innate — having identified that the human eye is capable of interpreting an image featuring the Golden Ratio faster than any other.

Why Your Gut Instinct Is So Much More Than A Sixth Sense

      PART II

      Neurotransmitters And The Gut-Brain Axis

Most of us are familiar with the concept that neurotransmitters are vital for brain function, and responsible for our emotional well-being. While many of these important chemicals are produced within the brain, fascinatingly, many of them are also produced by both gut cells, and microbes living within our guts! Serotonin — commonly referred to as the happiness hormone, and associated with depression — is in fact 90% produced within the digestive tract. Gamma-aminobutyric acid or GABA, which is responsible for regulating feelings of fear and anxiety, is not only produced within the gut, but is made on our behalf by gut microbes. Next time you are advised to take a probiotic, perhaps take the value of GABA into account!

      Gut Health, Immunity, And Inflammation

The gut-brain axis also plays an important role in the functioning of the immune system. The gut, and microbes within it, dictate what is metabolised and absorbed by the digestive system, impacting both immunity and inflammation. When certain bacteria take hold within the gut, they produce Lipopolysaccharide, or LPS, which is is an inflammatory toxin. Too much LPS passing from the gut into the blood, and the inflammation it triggers, has been associated with several brain disorders, including depression, dementia and schizophrenia.

In contrast, improving gut health by promoting the presence of supportive gut bacteria has been associated with improved brain health. With this in mind, we of course think of probiotics — although it’s worth noting that not all probiotics are created equal. Those that are known to impact brain health are called psychobiotics. Examples of such that have demonstrable results in studies include Bifidobacterium Longum which, after a six week study, significantly improved participants’ symptoms of mild to moderate depression and anxiety, and Galactooligosaccharides, which one study demonstrated could significantly reduce cortisol levels after only three weeks. Certain probiotics and prebiotics both hold the capacity to improve mental health via the gut-brain axis, alongside a broadly healthy and balanced diet. The question remains, will you take care of your gut, in order to tune into your gut instinct?

Why Your Gut Instinct Is So Much More Than A Sixth Sense

      PART I

We all tend to use the terms “gut intuition”, or “follow your gut”, but are these terms simply strange figures of speech, or is there something a little more to it? When we refer to our gut feelings, we usually mean having an instinctive sense about something that we can’t really explain. We might also think of having butterflies in our stomach, or even the sense that strong feelings come from somewhere deep in our abdomen. What you may not realise is that, hidden within the walls of your digestive system, you actually have what could be considered a second brain. The scientific term for this second brain is the enteric nervous system — or ENS for short — and it contains some 500 million neurons!

When Did We Start Attributing The Gut With Emotions?

Ancient Greek playwright Aeschylus provided one of the first written examples of tracing emotion to the gut. As a master of the Ancient Greek tragedy genre, many future playwrights and poets followed his lead in drawing this connection between the digestive organs and turbulent feelings such as anger and love. In this time, the Greek word slpankhnon described the principal internal organs, which were thought to be the seat of a variety of powerful emotions. In slight contrast, Hebrews of the same era also believed that the gut drove feelings, but specifically attributed positive emotions such as tenderness, kindness, benevolence, and compassion to the gut.

Some have theorised that the adoption of the word “heart”, over the course of the translation of the Bible towards it’s current forms, have evolved erroneously, having once meant something more akin to “bowel” when talking about that with emotional roots. Before we step out of the annals of history, it’s perhaps worth mentioning the curious demise of Aeschylus. While visiting Sicily in 455 BC, the Greek tragedian met a near unbelievable fate when a bird of prey dropped a turtle on his head, mistaking it for a rock that might be used to crack the animal’s shell. And so, the tragedy was that he was struck by the tortoise, rather than a gut instinct that might save him!

Emotion And The Gut: What Is The Actual Truth Of The Matter?

Those 500 million neurons may seem like a lot, but it remains small potatoes in comparison to the 100 billion neurons housed between your ears. Your ENS may not be capable of doing your taxes or dreaming of romance, but it can act independently of your brain — controlling the function of your digestive system. The ENS is also in constant communication with the brain, primarily via the vagus nerve — via communication is often referred to as the gut-brain axis. There is, in fact, a three way communication between the ENS, bacteria within our gut, and our limbic brain. Fascinatingly, our limbic brain is the area of our brain responsible for our instinctive responses, emotions, and decision making.

The Altruistic Prepper: Evolving Past An “Every Man For Himself” Mindset

      PART II

When Preppers Act For The Greater Good

Many preppers consider themselves “apocalypse” ready. The etymology of the word is quite fascinating, and not as many might imagine. Rather than describing a finite end, as we so often use the word, it in fact finds it’s roots in Greek and Latin, with a meaning of “uncovering”, or “revelation”. As many of us begin to struggle with limited social contact, or feel concern about loved ones, it becomes poignantly clear that our community is just as valuable as our supplies. Is this the revelation of the moment? If we are to take anything away from this challenging episode in modern history, it’s perhaps the recognition that polarized and self-interested societal behaviour has seen it’s day, and is ready to be upgraded. Examining prepper subcultures may be better enacted not by looking at those who only look out only for themselves, but at those who prepare to support society as a whole.

Perhaps one of the most infamous, and simultaneously tongue in cheek, prepper organizations is the Zombie Squad — an international community service and disaster preparedness organization that uses the metaphor of a “Zombie Apocalypse” for any natural or man-made disaster. Originally inspired by the British horror movie 28 Days Later, this group have made a point of throwing their efforts out into the community at large, and have drawn a huge global membership. With charity events and community service a central focus of the group, efforts have spanned from blood drives to emergency support during Hurricane Katrina.

Similarly, the “Rawlesians” are a survivalist group who base their actions on the fictional writing of James Wesley Rawles. While prepping for the worst, they not only prepare for their own survival, but for the capacity to give charitably to others in times of hardship. Prepper come influencer, Lisa Bedford — or The Survival Momdiscussed[url=http://the act of building charity into survival strategies. Fundamentally, establishing a support network in times of hardship is just as valuable as any other act we can undertake. Even Elon Musk is determined to colonize Mars, thereby providing a “backup” planet for humanity. What use is survival for one, if it isn’t for the many?

      Pulling Together As A Community

Political Scientist Daniel Aldrich developed an interest in the community during Hurricane Katrina, when a neighbour advised him to evacuate his family in just the nick of time. Having avoided becoming trapped as so many others did, Aldrich became fascinated by the power of community in disaster situations. He travelled the world, from India after the 2004 tsunami to Japan following substantial earthquakes. What he discovered what that most lives were saved not by emergency services, but by neighbours within communities. That the good intentions of NGOs could not be matched by the camaraderie and application of local knowledge within small close-knit societal groups.

Today, while we might shake our head at modern individualistic trends, we also see the best in people — perhaps more than we might have given credit to. While many might selfishly buy toilet paper and cleaning products, leaving others facing scarcity, those enacting social distancing and self isolation are broadly doing so not for themselves, but for others. The fit and healthy are choosing to respect enforced lock-downs to protect the most vulnerable within their communities. This behaviour mirrors the most beautiful elements of prepper sub-culture. Perhaps, if we make a strong point of recognizing such altruism, we will be able to permanently and prominently weave it into our collective culture as we emerge on the other side of the Coronavirus crisis. That is surely a form of preparedness worth aiming for.

The Altruistic Prepper: Evolving Past An “Every Man For Himself” Mindset

      PART I

Have you got your bug out bag ready? Those of you nodding enthusiastically probably count yourself among the numbers of a sub-culture called “preppers”. Those of you wondering what on earth I’m talking about are likely to come across the term again in the weeks ahead. This is because “preppers” is the term used to describe those who have made a point of being ready for catastrophe. A “bug out bag” is a handy pack containing everything you’d need if you had to abandon your home and hit the road in a survival situation — at only a moment’s notice. Only weeks ago the concept might have sounded like something from a Zombie movie, but today it seems a little less extreme.

Whether you’re bugging out, or quarantining at home, prepping is certainly more relevant than it’s ever been. The preppers are having their moment of mainstream recognition in the shadow of the Coronavirus, as the public panic buy and grapple with anxiety over the uncertain times ahead. In contrast, preppers have basements stocked with 6 months survival rations, and have been training to survive a societal collapse for years. The fascinating element within this phenomena is that today, we are experiencing is the first era in which such a mind-set has become globally advantageous. In the harsh light of a global crisis, there is much we can learn from preppers about what being prepared for the worst means — and fundamentally, what it perhaps shouldn’t.

      The Preppers Phenomena

The art of “prepping” — or being prepared — is nothing new. Before the days of refrigeration and well stocked supermarket aisles, humanity had mastered the art of preserving and storing food for harsh winters or battle sieges. In today’s world of instant availability, however, such preparedness has become an eccentricity, rather than the norm. Cultural blooms of prepper or survivalist enthusiasm have waxed and waned with moments of intensity, such as World War I and II, the Cold War, pop culture survivalist-themed hits of fiction, and even Y2K. Threats from war to Ebola have motivated individuals or communities to enact all sorts of readiness strategies: from hoarding food and medical supplies; to building underground bunkers, or buying remote properties to which they can “bug out”.

The Difference Between Prepping And Hoarding

While preppers may be feeling somewhat smug as social distancing is enforced in countries around the world, it’s worth noting that panic buying and prepping have very little in common. Once crisis strikes, the moment for accumulating supplies has passed, simply because panicked behaviour puts society at even further risk than it already was. Ben Hansen, the chief of media for PrepperCon, explained to the New York Times that he calls this “the nonsensical hoarding phase,” because, in reference to the public hoarding of supplies such as toilet roll, “the supply chain simply cannot support what we’re seeing right now.” That which creates greater public insecurity is not a constructive act of survivalism. In reality, community is what we need in uncertain times — even when we aren’t allowed to congregate!

“It was the best of times, it was the worst of times…it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair,” to borrow from the opening lines of Charles Dickens’s “A Tale of Two Cities.”
In this case, the epoch of coronavirus that has infected some 2.2 million people globally has essentially created a tale of two markets: one of Wall St. and the other of Main St.

The Celebration — Worthy Science of The Self —

      PART I

We spend so much time marvelling at the mysteries of the universe, while overlooking what is undoubtedly one of the most remarkable phenomena science has so far encountered: our extraordinary selves! Beyond recognising that the human heart beats more than three billion times in the average life-span, or the teacher favoured fact that, laid end to end, an adult’s blood vessels could circle Earth’s equator four times — surpassing such extraordinary statistics as these — our brains and bodies are almost incomprehensible, when explored from the right perspective. Here, we will delve into some of what science has discovered about the human being. Prepare to have your sense of self turned upside-down and inside out, before being reformed into something perhaps just a little more awe-struck, and a little more liberated!

Getting Some Perspective On The Stardust Concept

Most of us have come across a social media meme aiming to make us feel special by pointing out that we are stardust. As whimsical and charming as the concept is, you may not have stopped to absorb the gravity of the idea. Indeed, it is true that every atom within each of us has undertaken many manifestations, within many different forms, before becoming part of our current human whole. The extraordinary reality is that every atom in each of our bodies is billions of years old. The carbon and oxygen within the spectacular composition that is you would, by current scientific consensus, have been forged within stars some 7–12 billion years ago. That body of yours — the one with heart pumping, and lungs inflating and deflating, as you read this — contains hydrogen atoms which have made a tiny atomic-scale journey from the big bang, 13.7 billion years ago, to the present moment as part of what makes up you!

      We’re Not Alone In Here

If you examine your hands for a moment, it is easy to imagine that you are made up of, well, mostly you, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. First and foremost, if you were to complete a diligent count of the cells making up your body, far more of them would be bacterial than human. In fact, bacterial cells outnumber your own cells at a staggering rate of ten to one! Most of these cells make up friendly residents, and some of them are essential. Beyond anything else, without our ride-along amigos, we wouldn’t be able to digest all of the delicious and nutritious foods that we do.

The You Within Your Body On The Tip Of A Pin

If the bacteria numbers threw you, then perhaps take a seat. Our intuitive sense of self is a little misleading — you just need to go really small scale to appreciate it! Trying to grasp the miniscule nature of atoms is near impossible, but it helps to recognise how many of them each of our bodies contain. A human adult is comprised of roughly seven octillion atoms. Long form may give you a clearer grasp on that: it’s 7,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 per person! What really flips things on their heads is realising that each of those atoms is mostly empty space. The nucleus of each atom accounts for most of it’s bulk, but in terms of scale to the whole, each atom’s nucleus could be likened to an ant in the middle of a football pitch. If all of your empty space were eliminated, your body could fit into a cube measuring only 1/50th of a millimetre. Now, ponder for a moment on the epic complexity of your brain and body: as a spectacularly automated entity; as a processing power; as a dynamic, learning, evolving, and ageing thing. Not bad for what ultimately amounts to matter that could rest on the tip of a pin!

      PART II

      Tuning Into Our Non-Verbal Cues

Darlene Price, author of Well Said! Presentations and Conversations That Get Results, explains that how we say something can be more impactful than what we say: “In some studies, non-verbal communication has been shown to carry between 65% and 93% more impact than the actual words spoken, especially when the message involves emotional meaning and attitudes.” To perfectly capture this concept: we’ve all had an uncomfortable moment with a friend who looks as if steam is about to start coming out of their ears. We ask ‘are you OK?’, to which they respond ‘I’m fine!’, before stomping off. Their non-verbal cues painted an entirely different picture from the words they spoke!

The non-verbal cues we send out originate primarily within our so-called emotional brain — the limbic system — rather than our neocortex, where speech is rooted. This is why non-verbal communication tends to be more honest and revealing. While we may not be able to take full control of our non-verbal cues at all times, we can certainly become more aware of them, and consciously avoid cues that may negatively impact our interactions. Barbara Pease and Allan Pease, authors of The Definitive Book of Body Language share that open palms are associated with “truth, honesty, allegiance, and submission”. Folded arms or hunched shoulders present a closed signal, while a lifted chin can appear dominant.

It is also important to recognize that we all have a natural inclination to mimic the body language of those we interact with, as a way of initiating trust. Exploring the signals that our non-verbal cues give off is essential in order to understand the ways in which others react to us. It also draws us back, full-circle, to Treasure’s advice to speak from a place of honesty, authenticity, integrity, and love. When we don’t do this, there is a reasonable chance that our non-verbal cues will give us away!

      Strong Communication Is Always Multi-Directional

Of course, these signals are not something that we give off alone, but something that we can and should observe in others. Patti Wood, a body language expert, and the author of Snap: Making the Most of First Impressions, Body Language, and Charisma, revealed that in a face-to-face interaction, only a minute long and with just one person, up to 10,000 non-verbal cues can be exchanged. Fundamentally, as counter-intuitive as it may seem, mastering how to listen to others is vital if we are to master how to communicate outwardly. For this, the art of Active Listening is an invaluable tool — a term coined by American clinical psychologist Tomas Gordon. Simply, it requires that the listener fully concentrate, understand, and provide confirmation of their understanding. Confirmation might mean nodding, or reiterating what your co-communicator said to express that you have taken it in.

“The most basic of all human needs is the need to understand and be understood. The best way to understand people is to listen to them.” — Ralph Nichols

With greater awareness of how we share the things we wish — or perhaps even don’t wish — to communicate, we can begin to steer the flow of information between ourselves and others in a more constructive direction. What bad communication habits have you slipped into that you might be able to change? You may well discover — now that the Jack In The Box is open — that your ability to read the world around you and contribute to it’s workings has begun to evolve!

      PART I

      Activating Our Circadian Rhythms

Do you wish that you could communicate more effectively? Many of us are familiar with the idea of honing our communication skills in order to further our career, but — in truth — communication is a fundamental skill in every area of our lives. The effectiveness of our communication plays out each day in our relationships with friends, family, clients and colleagues. It contributes to the richness and depth of our daily experiences, and the amount of joy and satisfaction that we can both claim, and contribute to.

“Good communication is the bridge between confusion and clarity.” — Nat Turner

As with so many areas of potential personal growth, beginning to assess the habitual patterns into which you slide when connecting with others is a bit like opening a Jack In The Box. Once you take that lid off, there’ll be no getting it back on again! In this case, it’s likely safe to assume this as a good thing. In all probability, making good work of upping your communication game will trigger positive shifts in both your personal and professional communication. So, where do we begin? A wise launching point can certainly be found in the work of sound expert Julian Treasure, whose Ted Talk, “How To Speak So That People Want To Listen”, has drawn twenty six million views — and still counting!

Becoming Attuned To The Way That You Speak

While you may be imagining that strong communication requires the mastery of some extraordinarily complex formula, Treasure’s message is phenomenally simple. He highlights seven deadly sins of speaking — behaviours that will elicit a negative perception from listeners. These are simply: gossip, judgement, negativity, complaining, excuses, exaggeration, and dogmatism. It may seem obvious to point out these flawed behaviours, but it is important to distinguish that these are not merely bad to do, but are in fact behaviours that will detrimentally contribute to other’s sense of who we are as a person — how worthy what we have to say will be of attention.

“Communication is a skill that you can learn. It’s like riding a bicycle or typing. If you’re willing to work at it, you can rapidly improve the quality of very part of your life.” — Brian Tracy

Treasure goes on to establish what he considers the four cornerstones of powerful speech. These are: honesty, authenticity, integrity, and love. Of course, he explains, he doesn’t mean love in the romantic sense, but an expression of the idea that we must communicate with others from a firm base of wishing them well. He noted that a friend had described speaking with authenticity as to “stand in your truth”. Treasure expresses the unfortunate reality that all too often, we tend to speak poorly to people who simply aren’t listening. So, beyond speaking from a place of truth, what is required to become not only worthy of hearing, but captivating too?

      Larger Than The Words Alone

Treasure encourages becoming more aware of not only our words, but the way that we say them. He shared that historically, in political elections, we tend to vote for people who speak from the chest. This is a mastery of register — the sliding scale between the voice we use when we coo at our pet, and a gravelly Batman-esque voice. A lower-middle register, projected from the chest is, it would seem, the most compelling to listen to. He also recommends a measured pace, and awareness of our prosody — this being the melody of our words, and our inflection. Listening to someone who speaks in a monotone voice is, just as the etymology suggests, monotonous! Those who inflect every sentence as if it were a question — raising higher at the end — don’t hold attention, or claim authority. What do you notice about the register, prosody, pace, and volume of those around you, and how do you use these properties in your own speech?

“non-verbal communication is an elaborate secret code that is written nowhere, known by none, and understood by all.” — Edward Sapir

Having taken the lid off the properties of the sound of our speech, the time arrives to zoom out a little further. As it turns out, human communication is more complex than the sounds we make. When we speak, and even when we don’t, we are simultaneously emitting a broad array of non-verbal cues for others to read and interpret. Examples of what makes up this portion of our communication include eye contact, facial expressions, gestures, posture, and proximity or touch.
