I don't get it. What they think they are doing? This is like shooting in your foot. It doesen't make sense, even if you are a scammer you try to provide a minimum level of support to your customers.

Yeah, I was that user I suppose. I haven't received any answer back from HF tickets ( 10 days ago or so) from John's email or even John 's skype, even he is online all time and reading my messages.  And I was just requesting an invoice and to change the shipping adress as they told me months ago that could be done without problem

I highly doubt that you can run 550W through the PCI-E cable without any consequences.
Correct me if i'm wrong, i'm not really following this wire debate, but there are 2 PCI-E slots on each board, so each PCI-E cable should be able to provide around 300W.
I don't see a problem with that.

The discussion was about the general characteristics of 18AWG wire and not specifically for the Hashfast board.
Still 300W per one PCI-E cable with 3x 12V lines is pushing it to the limit according to my experience - the cable gets quite hot.
For example KNC specifically says that: You need to have 1 PCI-E cable for each asic card.

2x 6-pin PCIe cables are used to power my Bitfury M board.  A few people have had their's go up in flames when using between 500-600w.  The three 12V molex contacts on the 6-pin connector themselves are good for 300W or so all combined, so long as your PSU manufacturer doesn't cheap out on them and use a smaller gauge than spec (which seems to happen on occasion).

It shouldn't be a problem if we're all getting seasonic psus.

Most probably it would be OK for the long term with a good quality PSU, still I prefer to limit the current on a single 18AWG strand to 6A = 18A for a single cale.

My own research led me to believe it is much lower than 9A.

AWG 18 is okay up to 16A  (~<200W @ 12V)


I highly doubt that you can run 550W through the PCI-E cable without any consequences.
One of my PSUs (Cooler Master V850) is powering an October Jupiter and each module is being fed by a different PCI-E cable and still they get noticeably hot (around 44 degrees max).
Or try to connect 2 modules per PCI-E cable and it gets even hotter, yet the current per strand is only around 8-9A.

Are they loud?  Do you guys think they will be as loud as the avalon's?
I am currently very happy with my fanless bitfury setup.

Since it looks like ill void my warranty by running the unit in Australia.

Im going to rip out that Pos baby water cooling unit a putting in a bigger one. D5 vario pump, 60mm thick RX 240 series XSPC rad with corsair SP 120 fans
and how would you void your warranty in Australia? Different power from the socket?

Somewhere previous in the thread and hasfast's tos "operation in an ambient temperature other than 5-22 degrees Celsius (40-72 degrees  Fahrenheit)" warranty is voided.
In my little corner of Aus today it was 34c (93.2F) topping out latter this week at 41c (105.8F) normal Aussie summer

It depends on the length of the wire, and the acceptable voltage drop.

At 3 ft circuit legnth, 18 AWG is good for 9A with a 2.83% voltage drop.  As for safe, at 2.83% voltage drop that would only 1.5W dissipated as heat.  Still the point was somewhat academic I doubt HF will be pushing anywhere close to that much current but if they did the limiting factor wouldn't be the artificial PCIe graphics standard for 6 and 8 pin connectors.

KNC is what, 800W for 4 boards, or 200W per board, but they are using 20AWG wire, which adds up to 18" of 20AWG to the PSU cable length. Removing teh KNC wire and plugging the PSU cables right in added about .1V to the VRMs

A gross exaggeration on the Avalon B1 unit noise.

You can very easily hold a quiet conversation next to one without issue as long as the temperature is below 85F.

The BFL units though (as many of you will testify) is a different beast. It runs pretty damn hot with it's case on. That is why almost everyone removes the housing and changes the fan as if it were "an unnecessary accessory".

While I can run my Avalon B1 (70~85GH/s) at below 50C with fan at 2k RPM. It doesn't really get hot or ramp up the Fans until the temp rises above 95F.

A BFL unit is a hit or miss (more often a miss IMO). Some are cool and work fine with the case on at 35C. Others (better than 50% IMO) are overheating and throttling on a constant basis. Necessitating the removal of the cover to get it under 80C.

The latest fun trend is for the chips (and their apparent cores) is to fail and then necessitating an RMA request. A costly trip back to BFL HQ for a good chuck in the trash bin. Assuming the custom BFL power supply doesn't spark and arc before killing the units attached to it.
