It doesn't work everything but HODL but generally it reduces risks for scenario like you faced, i personally miss TONS of pumps, sell coins while they now stabilise at x5 - x10 (exclude NEO which is out of the charts xD). ONLY HODL coins that you believed and seriously make some good research and track your coins even-though they moved pretty violent these days. 100 % HODL doesn't work well for me, my current strategy on alts is based on my speculation as well entry,
For instance:
1. Fresh new coins that holds serious potential like COSS, SPECTRE, KNC, REQ i would go for a long HODL + dips until it make way to the top.
2. Existing coins that move but doesn't perform well like OK, LBR, i would go for basic entry low and sell high, always have stop loss implemented.
3. BIG coins like ETH i would be personally go for arbitrage for that differences of USDT.

I'm really disappointed with myself now because of Verge. Way back June 2017, I bought $200 worth of XVG and I sold it last week a day before the pump happened. It could be worth more than $5k now if I just HODL. Well, I need to move on and learn from this mistakes. This will be a lesson for me to have patience and wait for the right time to sell my coins. The reason why I sold it was because I need more funds to buy another coin. I'm happy with the coin I bought because I can now see that it is now starting to pump. Maybe, I'm just half disappointed every time I'm seeing the current value of Verge. I bought some XVG again and will surely hold it this time.

I bought a bit XVG at price 9.8e-07 BTC, and sold all when it reached 30.4e-07 and now it's 95.9e-07 BTC. But I dont regret about it.
Basically get profit x3 is too much already, I dont expect that much when I purchased XVG.
The current price, it already about X18 compared with the price of 1 month ago. This coin may be the most outperform altcoin compared with BTC since Feb.2017.

My character mostly like this. When i sold my coin and the price continue, i dont regret at all.
I have my own target and discipline is the answer of the all of my success. I am not success yet i have optimistic in my mind amd i believe it will happen if i am discipline.

Feel sorry for this, because XRP will pump higher for sure early in 2018. Holding on is really hard specially we see some losses but if you really believe on that coin and its technology you will surely not give up on that because you know its worth. We all make mistakes but the good thing is we can learn from it, do better next time for good.

HODLing will always be the best move in trading. The longer you wait, the better chances you have at selling your tokens or coins is the pumping period. hold, make sure you pick a good coin or stock, do research, and even if it dips just buy again.
I never sell off my Altcoins every time there's a huge dip or in every bloodbath event I'd going on because I always know that after the mega Altcoin drop there's another pump and holders are being rewarded since the beginning. Almost all Altcoins prices are increasing after every connections so I never scared or I never do panic selling every time there's dropping event going on.
I'm always regretting because i'm not the person that holding a coins on long term if i have opportunity to sell it once i have only small profit i do sell it. That why everytime i saw the price of coins are so high i regret why i sell it so early.

i got my ethereum at 1400$ and was scared shitless when it fell to 900$ so i panicked and sold all my eth(3 ETH) only to realise that it again rose back to 1300$ and i lost 1500$ which is a very huge amount for me.
i learnt my lesson and decided to keep my calm from now on.

Its psychologically very hard to hold when everything is in red. I know that feel. It is identical. But when we reach may or even april, darks days will be gone forever. Hodling position will be profitable.

For me its better to hold it because you can get more profit and I think there's nothing to regret because many opportunities will come, you just need to do is don't do the mistake again. I suggest to you keep collecting nad holding crypto because someday you can get more profits and you will forget all money you loss. 
I think thats an experience who everybody will mke who start in cryptocurrencies and trading. Everybody look at the charts and see the volatility and thinks he can buy in the dump and sell ond the pump. But in real life it is not that easy to get to this points. And when your in this situation as a newbie, you never know what to do and start asking people what you should do. But the problem is nobody cant see the future so thats why by the most starts some fud and then they make the panic sales and loose a lot of money.

Hindsight is great, but at some point every crypto coin will have a maximum all time high. How were you to know that when you purchased Verge it wasn't reached? I agree that HODLing from this point forward is a good strategy, especially in 2018 whilst all these coins are on discount, but be fair with yourself that you can't predict the future. Sometimes it's a good idea to exit coins before they crash - like selling at the beginning of January before the Chinese New year.
Its better to HODL a token until the value of it is increasing than to regret that when you sell it in a low price or value, all we need to do is to wait be patient all the time.
I've made similar moves man. I just tried to use it as a learning experience as well!

Your first problem was that it was Ripple
It really depends on you, if you have a certain amount that you want to obtain from selling your coins then why hodl for too long? But if you really trust that your coin would do good as much as verge did, then you should hodl for a while.
