Gambling brings so much joy especially when you're on the winning side, when things are all in your favor it just seems like you should never stop. But when it gets bad, you look for a way to pour out your anger, either on someone or on something.
When someone is addicted to gambling I feel it's worst than one who's addicted to drugs.

So much has been said about betting companies regarding how they should be responsible in helping those who are addicted to gambling, although is really hard to do so on there own path because gamblers can't be monitored.
I don't know if booking an appointment with a therapist would help or is something you as a gambler who wants out should do on your own.

The question is if you're a gambler or have someone who is, what's the best way to help out. And what's your story on escaping that addiction (gambling)...

How do you fight this battle?
It is normal for a gambler to have a limit of happiness when he wins his bet but when he loses the bet he suffers temporarily but later returns to normal life and starts gambling again.
But a professional gambler never wagers the entire capital on a gamble and does not lose control if he loses the bet. But gamblers who cannot control themselves in gambling have no need to indulge in gambling.
There is no need for a psychologist or a therapist to recover from severe gambling addiction as a professional gambler learns self-control techniques to engage in gambling.

It really is hard, and I am talking from experience. There is nothing heroic or brave about people who like to pretend otherwise. If you do not want to lose a large amount of money when out-of-control-gambling then you need to set up rules for yourself before you even decide to enter the casino in the first place.

Setting up rules is just easy to say but the question there is, can you abid by it? Gambling addiction is not just something you wake up in the morning and just use words or setting rules that you'd use to end it. I feel it takes time to erase it off your body, is best to avoid things that are associated with it, not easy too but a trial can help.

Quote
Discipline is the key.

I believe that as long as you keep yourself disciplined to following your own rules then that alone should ensure you do not gamble emotionally or irrationally. If you cannot keep yourself in check, mentally, then you should not be gambling in the first place.

Discipline is one key factor that helps in keeping one in check.
There's this friend of mine in my country that where I used to work back then, he vowed not to gamble again and at some point I almost believed what he said. For about 3 weeks he was nowhere near the gambling shop where I work, only for me to see him the 4th week where he was staking games and I asked him what's happening, he said he's not gambling that this one is for the urge 😅. Like WTF is happening.
So is really hard to say something and mean it.

habit or we are already addicted to gambling, it will be difficult to stop if there is no real intention.. because of the habits that they do every day or even when they gamble, they always win. I think it will be very difficult to stop.. therefore we must know how to control it so that we are not too addicted.. gambling is okay, but we must know the possible risks we will face.. and we must be willing to accept that..

But it will not be difficult to do if you yourself are determined to leave gambling.

Habit is not easy to stop. It is not done by word of the mouth but excruciating effort by yourself and people around you. In fact for an addict, it goes beyond your personal decision to stop it, there must be external support for that to happen because sometimes the addict may lose consciousness and in the mercy of third party and to be taken to a rehab center. Like someone can attempt to take their life if they have bet unreasonably and probably exhausted all hope. So in that case so many things can be going in there mind and it is not easy to take a personal decision in such situation.

If a gambler that is already addicted want to fight addiction, he must be ready to do it and gives the necessary support they need, it's just like a fat buddy that is ready to reduce the fatness of his body and don't want to stop consuming fatty and oil food. As a gambler that is ready to quit gambling for good, it will be very healthier to skip things that may contribute to gambling, as you have said like changing if the channel to a non-sporty channel like entertainment and news or even action movies, no way you will see gambling advertisements in such channels, and if they appear, it will be lesser as compared to sporty channel televisions.
Many people have been disappointed by gambling, and the number is continually increasing. The gambling system will never cease to exist, but it will continue to drive more people insane as a result of their addiction and record enormous losses. Stopping gambling needs more substantial planning and disciplinary action. A gambler may fantasize about quitting gambling overnight; nevertheless, he must first determine disciplinary rules that will govern him; he need more time to carry out his actions; and he is hesitant to engage in gambling-related activities.

It's the same as prevention is better than cure. I agree on this if what we are talking about is smoking and taking drugs but for some certain thing like drinking a beer, wine and playing a gambling, no because it can be beneficial to our body if we only consume them moderately.

Not all those who drink and gamble are addicted to it so there is no need for them to cure or stop doing it. In curing an addicted person, verbal or by using our mouth can still be involved. If it ain't working, that is the time to ask a help for some apparatus. I remember there is a thread here last time about using a pendulum to cure gambling addiction but I think it's not effective as by using some medicines, injections and other stuffs.

Very much agree with you, and by the way, committing suicide is not an extraordinary something,  but a crazy thing to do, like I've always said, stopping gambling is easy if only the gambler is not addicted, for those who are already hooked, it is just as you have said, they either need to stop themselves, or need to be stopped, but unfortunately, I've discovered that most gambling addicts are introverts find it had to relate with the outside world, for such kind of people, it is hard to know what they are going through and how to help them, except you are really close to such a person.

A gambler must make loses, that is a sure thing, and sometimes, such loses might be extreme, and this is why we are always advised to only gamble with as much as we can afford to loose, if only will learn to always keep to this rule, there wouldn't be any problems, and even if there was, it wouldn't be much.
I see it as crazy to commit sucide due to gambling addiction or failure to make the winning and this is why it better to avoid excessive gambling if you can't control your emotional reaction if you incur loses along the line,  I have not heard of suicide due to gambling before only a case of an o level students who drank poison for losing his school fees to sports betting,  so in this case, I don't think he is and addict but just unlucky and unbiased to have gambled with his fees.

We may look it really crazy but we never knew the pressure that person is undergoing.  The debts pressure, family pressure, peer pressure and many more.  They are building on the addicted gamblers mind making them depressed.  We should always support them and show them that they are not alone while we are slowly shifting their attention to other things.

Also more blames is on those around him,  I think he may have suffered from discriminations and other rejection from those around him stead of supporting the guy to overcome the incident.

True people seems to put blame on addicted gambler rather than understanding and supporting them to recover.  Even family that tends to support the victim still put pressure on blaming the addicted gambling first before helping them.  My thought is that we should never blame the person who wanted to remove his addiction if we intend to help them.

Being a gambling addict to recover is not as complicated as we think.
The process is not complicated, but unfortunately, there are still many gambling addicts out there who struggle to cure themselves. It is always crucial for individuals who are addicted to determine how they will follow the steps to break free from their addiction. Recognizing that it is a significant problem probably makes the job easier because if a gambler does not acknowledge their addiction despite signs being evident to those around them, it would be nearly impossible for that person to change.
What kind of struggle do you mean?
If they really struggle and have the determination to stop gambling, it won't be complicated because everything comes from the thoughts and actions of each gambler himself.
There are some gamblers I have met who want to stop gambling but they don't want to leave the casino they are using, they have access to it all the time so there is always an urge to gamble.
The desire to achieve goals without action is just a dream.

I really have loads of sympathy for people who wants to stop gambling, because people are bombarded with online gambling related advertisements on all platforms. I counted the gambling advertisements on television the other day... and I nearly fell off my chair, when I saw how much advertisements are shown in 1 hour.  Roll Eyes

Then people go online and they get bombarded with gambling advertisements on their phone / laptop / iPad etc... etc.. it is just crazy how much money are paid to advertise gambling content.  Roll Eyes

Its usually the money which is a problem.   Allocate a set amount for playing the game, stop telling yourself anything about winning back money lost.  Its a game not work and not there for earning money like a job.  Just separate those two events in your life, a job can earn money a game will not.   Part of the game is winning some  money maybe but you need to literally write down that fallacy and then cross it out, once you recognize its a spending event for entertainment I think its alot easier to handle any addiction.
Consider gambling not a source of living but just an entertainment. That way, you will only play when you have enough money to gamble, or just gamble on your extra money. And when you gamble, never chase your losses because that will only lead to addiction. Know that when you gamble, you are letting yourself to lose your money so just spend an amount that you can afford to lose.

Gambling advertisements are all over the internet nowadays which affects those who want to recover from gambling addiction negatively. Though they are trying to avoid gambling, they will still be tempted to try out their luck again as they see advertisements and promotions online. If a person wants to completely avoid gambling, he should also limit is number of hours using gadgets so he could avoid gambling temptations.
It takes a lot of courage and discipline for a person to get over and heal from gambling addiction. There are things that he has to sacrifice and avoid in order to succeed and totally be healed. It needs discipline and self-control to be determined about what he really wants. He must change his lifestyle and routine to get over his gambling addiction successfully since this is a challenging thing emotionally and physically.
Currently, gambling advertisements are not only online, they are now also available on TV media. As a result, it is becoming difficult to control them in favor of addicted gamblers. But to be cured of this condition, the gambler must solve his problem. If necessary stay away from internet or TV. But I think this task is difficult for any gambler. He must follow a routine. However, if the gambler does not pay attention to those things, then it is never possible remove his addiction.
It's not as complicated as you might imagine and in my opinion gambling addicts will be able to recover if they have activities that can forget gambling such as work or anything that doesn't provide an opportunity to think about gambling I think it will be faster and gambling addicts should always be motivated to keep away from gambling with a strong will.
Being a gambling addict to recover is not as complicated as we think.

Someone who has been constantly involved with gambling-related stuff will surely see a lot of them because marketing experts of the casinos run targeted ads targeting people who have shown interest in gambling any time in the past, so if you have been gambling or ever used the search to search something related to it or even if you used YouTube to watch some videos involving gambling, you are a potential target for them.

Those who want to get rid of those advertisements should change all the accounts that they used before, like Gmail and stuff, where your records are saved and they have recorded your searches and everything which are causing those ads to appear every now and then.

maybe if someone who has entered into a state of addiction will certainly be very difficult to stop their addiction or even have no thoughts of stopping gambling but for someone who has not become a gambling addict maybe they still have a way to stop gambling.

and for someone who is too addicted to gambling and already has the desire to stop gambling I think it will also make it easier to stop betting activities in various ways and with help from family or by means of hypnosis as discussed in other threads.

And the person who warns you about this thing also does something different, because it also adds a reason to not continue playing gambling from being addicted to it in reality.

The truth is that even sometimes we will discover that those that introduced gambling to us aren't a victim of addiction because they have been used to it and are matured enough to manage my themselves through it, that's why sometimes we shouldn't make comparisons in gambling.
