it depends on the type of alt coins if Altcoins is the token of ETH, I hold it in my ledger and some time in little case in myetherwallet and if typical alt is not eth token, i hold in it's own wallet. so you must determine the type of your altcoins
do not put your password or private key in your pc or even in your email better write in a paper then put it in a safe place. just be sure you can retrieve it if there is unexpected problems. avoid clicking links that you don't know or even links you know just be cautious. if you use mew you can follow thier instructions. bookmark their site or use metamask. also use antivirus it can block unsafe sites.

Use offline wallets,hardwallets so that your private keys wont be stolen by these hacker,do not expose yourself from the people that can steal your keys,never use web and app wallet because these wallets are more vulnerable to hackers! use metamask extension to prevent phishing sites on your browser and most importantly do not give your keys to anyone!

You wont be secured when you arent using hardwallet,because these wallets is the only way to prevent hackers from stealing your private key,these wallets will protect you all the time if you asked me! i have been using ledger nano and trezor for my coins which is why in never get hacked nor tried to because these wallets are unbreakable.
