I agree with you because I start working with Ethereum only 1 year ago and real-time I still hold it because it is a potential for the future. Popularity of it is incredible on the market and any exchange sites.
Nowadays people are not evaluating the Ethereum platform as much. People are now moving away from this platform due to the exorbitant transaction gas fee increase.Its popularity is declining day by day. At one time the Ethereum platform was very popular and next to Bitcoin Seemed to be the best currency.
I am afraid I can agree that Ethereum is not evaluating any more. There are new upgrades, new projects. We are waiting for Ethereum 2.0. which will be the most important upgrade ever. Now people really abandon this network because of high fees and switch to some cheaper alternatives like Polygon and BSC, but they still remember about Ethereum and I think they might come back in the future.
At the point before lightning network and layer 2 comes, yes Ethereum is better than Bitcoin with its ability to deploy many of dApps on top of it. Nowadays i believe many people prefer Bitcoin over Ethereum, and if needed to choose Altcoins, theres also many coins that can compete, Polkadot, BSC, ICX, and many more.

Although there have been more forks made since last year after Bitcoin Cash, still Bitcoin has become very successful and has always been the leading crypto as it has around 40% of the entire daily trading volume of the crypto market. Ethereum is undoubtedly the next crypto after Bitcoin as it occupies the second position since 2015 as it is gaining popularity due to smart contracts and transparent blockchain audits and that is why almost all new altcoins today are based on the Ethereum smart contract blockchain backbone. Without any doubt ethereum is the best altcoin ever made in the crypto world and there is a high possible that in the long run it can surpass bitcoin as the top cryptocurrency in the market.
Ethereum has various altcoins competing with it but I never in anyway sees any challenge Bitcoin. It gave birth and pave ways to all these coins and so it shall remain the king to them all.

You are absolutely right that Ethereum is the best crypto currency after Bitcoin with strongest use case of having capability/capacity to create smart contracts, DEFIs and NFTs and many many more and after London hardfork it is Deflationary currency like BTC as a value of store becuase its coin Burning process is in place now. Ethereum is still facing an issue of High transaction fee which makes small investors/tradesr comfortable to pay to execute their transactions but hopefully that once Ethereum migation to ETH 2.0 is completed.
Of course Etherium is the second most popular coin after Bitcoin. Many investors and traders prefer to invest instead of Bitcoin. But now the reaction is because of that so high excessive amount of Eth gas fees it's popularity pretty decrease.
ethereum started the OP writing posts until now it is still the second most popular in the crypto market according to my own analysis but for the coming year it might be shifted by competitors such as BNB or other newcomers
