Couldn't the thief just launder the coins bit by bit and get away with it scot-free?

For example: You could just trade some of them for another virtual currency on some random exchange, and then convert what you bought back into BTC, and voila, clean bitcoins. Or use a laundering service. It seems really easy to get around if you're smart?

Actually, the best way to clean the coins is to send them to an exchange, then cash it out to your bank account. Then use all that fiat to buy back the coins on the same exchange. Untraceable  Grin

Do you guys think it would help at all to notify dropbox or what a major security breach this could have been?   They could at least get their resources looking into who has logged into his dropbox account over the most recent time...

I'm sure they have a decent IT security team there.   The more people working on this the better IMO
OP should def. atleast try it atleast it gives more % of chance to find the thief than going with no traces.

You should read up on the Linode hacks that happened a couple of years ago.

There is simply no way that dropbox is going to take any responsibility.

Something new happening. He is barely waiting for confirmations and sending coins down the rabbit hole, pealing off small amounts (<3BTC) as he goes.

Then it seems, trying to reconsolidate the small amounts.

Gonna take a long time to shift 1170BTC like that  Tongue Grin
He has to have some kind of script for that it would take him forever otherwise.
You think he has a script?

Since I said he was doing it in transactions <3BTC, he's done both his latest transactions over 3BTC

Edit:
No, you are right. All his transactions have occured at 02 or 03 seconds. Must be a script.
But this way without mixer it's easy to track anyway so i don't see the point of doing that.

I couldn't live my life looking over my shoulder for bad guys 24/7.  Settling with Klee to return most of the BTC seems like a much safer option.....

Sadly, that is unlikely to happen.

Scammers don't understand karma.  Neither on
spiritual level (what goes around comes around),
nor in practical terms.

If they did, they would think twice about scamming.

No... the path of the scammer is keep scamming
till you get busted.

Sad but true.

Looks to me like the hackers only realistic option is to return the BTC.

Sooner or later, he/she/it is going to make a mistake and reveal their identity. When that happens, they are going to become a target for a lot of very unfriendly people.

Which obviously this person is to have been able to steal them in the first place. I am just looking at it realistically.

I DO hope that you get them back. This person is a criminal and deserves to be caught.
Congratulations, if the thief is reading this topic and didn't come to that, then you have just helped him Smiley

I don't think he helped him :-) as this will not really work :-)
When he will transfer coins into an exchange then we might get a chance to track this transaction. And later track his exchange account :-)

That was the point of my post, if he does would it then he would probably do it...well, before you came in.

Its only a matter of time when the thief finds a good mixing service and from there it will be next to impossible finding the culprit

Anyway hope you find him/her/them and get back your coins.

Why mixing provider will clean them for some bitcoins if he can earn 500 btc by returning those stolen coins.

If the thief is smart he wont send all the coins at once to the mixing service but in parts

*Cough cough* you guys shouldn't post ideas or plans if you want to catch him.

Let me shut up now  Lips sealed

Can you imagine how much pressure he/she must be under knowing these is a $300,000 bounty on his/her head?

Every noise must be analysed - is it something new, or just the regular sounds of the house? Is there someone outside?

If our hacker lives in a city, any time he/she hears a siren, he must freeze. Is it past yet? Feeling the sweat streaming down his back. Can he escape through the window? Why is his chest so tight? Will he fight? Will he pretend he knows nothing if apprehended?

Who is after him? Did he make any mistakes? Did he try to log into the dropbox a few days before, without being behind tor. Is that logged? Is he sure his IP hasn't been revealed somewhere? Is it even possible to be truly traceless? As a hacker, he knows it's not possible.

Listening to the silence hacker?

Where I came out of, people got shot for hundreds of dollars.

This hacker is clearly a computer chair hacker in that he has no idea how the rest of the criminal world works.

Stealing that amount if bitcoin is so stupid because of the way bitcoin can be tracked.

The hackers need only make one small mistake and he will be busted. His best hope is to return the btc. His second best hope is that the police catch him. The last and worse option is three large dudes show up to collect the bounty. What isn't an option is that the hacker gets to live happily ever after spending the coins.

My prediction is that the hacker is in jail or dead in less than two weeks.

Scambags should get the instant karma.
He don't deserve to die he deserves to be punished :-)
I don't know how to track him at the moment but I am sure that head hunters will get him.
500btc price is enough to make the best head hunters join this searchings.

This h@x0r must be really depressed atm. As he know that those coins are gonna to be tracked till his end.
