But yeah still, I'm not continuing my Bitcoin Magazine subscription after this thing. I can't support behaviour like this.

I'll have to reconsider this as well. It's not only my subscription that will be affected though. The site I run is currently becoming a major reseller of Bitcoin Magazine in our country for both subscriptions and single issues. We have to reconsider the whole thing and if we quit it will hurt Bitcoin Magazine much more than a single subscription.

What difference would my bet make to your magazine? I must be missing something.

While I don't think anybody in their right mind thought Matthew would honor his wager, I fail to see how this kind of interpretation could possibly avoid him earning a Scammer tag.  This is lower than the eBay scams for a picture of an item.

+1

I didn't even understand the implications of his interpretation first. He only sends 20 BTC to that address in question, which is his own address. So he ends up not paying anything to anyone, except 20 BTC to himself. A good scam, but it is a scam.

Previously just a troll, now a scammer as well. And this is the guy who is the chief editor for Bitcoin Magazine etc...

tries to be funny...

... is NOT

There are some like me who never took any part in to these schemes, and I have to say that for a completely outsider it is pretty funny Cheesy

First funny thing was idiot people investing in pirate40 and believing him to deliver the 3300% annual ROI, after that people believing that Matthew would give money out for free. Hilarious Cheesy

But yeah still, I'm not continuing my Bitcoin Magazine subscription after this thing. I can't support behaviour like this.

To be honest, I am not really surprised.
Fortunately, I live in part of the world, where everyone is a scammer, until proven honest.

And although I am slightly amused by the butthurt you've inflicted upon this forum, it saddens me that estabilished memebers of the community are not more honest than casual scammers who try their luck here and there. I only hope that the theory about free market is right and the community ostracizes you and your shady business.

On condition that a more than a 10% haircut is considered a default, regardless of creditor acquiesence.

Agreed.

According to your recent revelation, Matthew, I didn't format my bet properly. Why was it accepted?

There is no outs in his "interpretation".
Yep, no outs. IANAL but he knowingly made multiple fraudulent statements, upon which investors in BS&T relied to their financial detriment, having specifically advertised his fraudulent scheme to them with that explicit purpose. What's more, his antics right now are pretty good proof of intent to defraud.

I'm not terribly surprised he hasn't paid out; that's why I never bothered hedging my bet. What I am surprised by is him thinking that this gives him some kind of out.

This link right here gives his own voice saying he will pay out to bettors. Even Micon was told that over the phone:

There is no outs in his "interpretation".

Thanks to everyone who participated in this bet. It was a great social experiment for me to find out who my true friends were, and also to entertain the community (which is my true purpose on these forums and always will be). Unfortunately, it looks like I lost the bet. This means I'll need to pay out exactly as described in my original thread OP.

Many of the people betting were very careful to point out that others were ignorant and foolish to invest their money into Pirate without doing due diligence beforehand, so far as to call them shills, suckers, etc. This leads me to believe that the individuals betting in my bet are very wise with their money and would only bet if they carefully read and understood the rules of the bet. For this reason, I am confident that the very wise individuals betting in this thread will be satisfied with the very literal interpretation of my thread.

I will begin paying for my losses as outlined in the following rule:

If I lose the bet, you get 20BTC sent to that address (13dSK4663Ts7j2PwHS1eUVjycKLBwx7PJM). If you lose, you'll need to send 20BTC to my address.

I'll begin processing the payouts for each of the 112 betters in this spreadsheet immediately: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0Ajtx05YrHtIydFVHcGxLOExTbnhqajJLZmlSZUNtM3c&pli=1#gid=0

Please make sure to following along for your own record keeping purposes. I will update this thread with each payment as well. Thanks again!

And Matthew is indeed paying to http://blockchain.info/address/13dSK4663Ts7j2PwHS1eUVjycKLBwx7PJM

For the record, the reason we don't generally see this kind of trickery with contracts is that the courts take an exceedingly dim view of it. They do not interpret them in the way that Matthew is trying to do. Ever.

He will still lose 2240 BTC if he honors his silly interpretation but that's irrelevant. Scammer is a scammer.

Nope:

He needs a scammer tag for sure. Nobody could possibly have interpreted the original post in that way. It's beyond ridiculous.

Technicality fail. If you wanted to pull a technicality it would not fly with your intended statement of literalness as you have just worded it. Because of the statement 'in this format', it is clear that the only thing the betters failed to do was to place their bets in 'code'bet info'/code'.

Next time you need a loophole just ask one of us lawyer types. IANAL though, so don't ask me. I just play one in that RL thing we hear about every so often..

Mathew,
The rule was "Post in this thread how much you're committing and I will double that amount you commit (maximum of 10,000BTC in bets allowed in this thread total) if Pirate does not pay out in 3 weeks as he described in his thread. "

What you quote is part of the example you gave.
