Profession: Software Engineer

I've been mining for over a month now and I'm running ~1.4 GH/s (soon to be ~1.7). My system makeup is currently 6950 unlocked x2, a 5830 (soon to be 2), and a 5850.  Hodge podge I know. The 6950s are for my main system and the 5830s I managed to snag from newegg. The 5850 was a craigslist deal.

Wow Johnnvm that sounds impressive. I would be interested in new software for the community. What language would you be using? I'm def interested especially if its open source.

Actual Job: Sophisticated algorithmic trader focused primarily on domestic (US) equities. High frequency, high volume (millions of shares/day).

Been following bitcoin developments for the past few months. Haven't been trading it due to poor exchange software. If large-scale traders like myself are going to get seriously actively involved in the btc markets there needs to be much better exchange software. $500,000 per single trade isn't anything to me in the stock market (and do many many of those daily) but I don't trust the BTC exchanges at all to handle even 1/10th that right now. Been considering coding up some open source exchange software for btc based on my extensive experience with equity market exchanges. At very least probably will be coding up some public data feed software for use by the general public - BTC tickerplants/feeds/etc. to encourage algorithmic trading. The current software/interfaces for it offered by the BTC exchanges is a total joke and entirely pathetic.

I'm a F@H guy who's running bit-coin for the summer because it covers the electricity costs, folding doesn't. I'm running about 2Ghash with no plans to for any larger investment.

"So, I have this idea for a great movie. It's about two gnomes who find a bracelet of power, and they have to take it to the Burning Steppes and cast it into the Cauldron. They form the Brotherhood of the Bracelet. Along the way they're trailed by a murloc named Gottom, who's obsessed with the bracelet, and nine bracelet bogeymen. It could be a three-parter, called 'Ruler of the Bracelet'. The first part would be called 'The Brotherhood of the Bracelet', followed by 'A Couple of Towers', with the climactic ending called 'Hey, the King's Back!'"

Incidentally, the best way to make sure newbies aren't pissed off by not being able to post in other threads might be to better publicize that they have to post here first. I was wondering all over the boards wondering why I couldn't post until I ran across this section.

-Wallets should be encrypted by default. (you would only need to decrypt them when sending bitcoins.)
- Some kind of build-in escrow service into the protocol (else we need third parties again which is the same problem the current money system has)
- easier to use (copy and pasting bitcoin addresses is fine for us techies but not for my mother)

1. (Encrypted wallets) I totally agree.
2. I don't understand you: An escrow service means nothing else than having a 3rd party involved.
3. A system like DNS would be of use here: mapping names (domains, email addresses or anything) to the addresses (IPs, here: bitcoin addresses). But this would remove a lot of the anonymity of the current system and create a further target for hacking attacks (MITM attack forging a 'DNS entry').

Been reading through this intro thread for the first time and wanna say firstly - "I love ya's all!"  Grin

Never done an intro here so figured I should.

I only got into Bitcoin recently after reading about in on another forum. My curiosity was spiked immediately when I discovered this was not a centrally controlled currency and so got into reading all I could. The first article I read said something along the lines of - "this is how Bitcoin works, oh and you can mine for coins too if you like but thats only for the geeks.." and that immediately got my attention! Being a professional geek (employed full time in the IT field and have run my own computer business) I knew right there and then mining was going to be for me even though I had no clue how it worked Grin

Currently mining with 2 x 6950's but looking to expand in the near future. Have already made plans to move into larger accommodation to facilitate a few new rigs.

Good luck to you all and welcome aboard! I'm sure this is going to be one hell of a ride, as its proven to be already.

Hi all,

So I'm a full time hacker, part time musician, and like many of you have recently become obsessed with this Bitcoin thing. I have high hopes - it really feels like the dawn of a new era. In ten years time we will be looked on as pioneers...
