My own idea on this;
1. You use half of your money to invest in Bitcoin.
2. Use other half to invest in promising ICOs alone(in this case you need to do your research well to know good and promising ICO.
3. You can also invest indirectly by partaking in different bounty campaigns to get diffetent crypto.

Ico investments are more like gambling since even icos that seem to have good projects and white paper can turn out to be a bust. If investing in btc is a big gamble already, then ico investment more than doubles the risk

However, the main drawbacks of these kinds of investments is the amount of scammers that are freely roaming the community. Nevertheless it is still okay and a wise idea to invest on ICOs due to the amount of potential profits you could gain in this industry.

ICOs are considered a new trend in the world and most people use this to build their own ecosystem but most have 95% of the ICO deceptive and there is no clear sign after the ICO. I believe we need to have many appropriate solutions to eliminate this as the number of ICO projects is increasing and is not being verified by many people in the recent past.

I am also a newbie in this crypto world, same as you are I also ask these kind of questions and thankfully have found some answers. Before you enter any investments, learn first the cryptocurrency and the blockchain technology, everyday make a reading a habit about these. Next is I prefer to allot my time in an ICO. Atleast in the ICO you'll earn altcoins as your profit by joining bounty campaigns. You'll also get to learn some platforms and how the technology works in their projects. By the time you get enough profit, you can start slowly in buying bitcoins. Just be careful in selecting bounty programs since there are a lot scams right now.

I think bitcoin is the best choice at the current market. I think it is a choice which is more better than any ICO or any altcoin. In my way of thinking, it is getting extremely hard to find a promising ICO, so it is better to not make investment in ICOs in these times.
