Clever investor always diversify his portfolio. Investing in just one crypto-currency carries with it both huge risks and a small chance to get a huge profit in case of its growth.
The most important factor in determining which crypt money / money we will invest in is the amount of time we plan to invest. Current levels are very suitable for getting Bitcoin. But the strong rival Ethereum and so on. altcoins can also be evaluated. If your patience is high enough, you may need to buy a bitcoin and forget your investment for a year. Whatever it is, it may be better to invest in an amount that you will not feel sorry for when you lose.
It's depend on your plan. If you plan to do Long-term invest you should choose coins that have been famous like BTC, ETH, and the other. But if you plan to do short-term invest you should choose some new coin but you must be careful and choose wisely.
investing in the long term would require more patience. to coin a bit of Bitcoin is hard to predict, especially if investing in new altcoin and not yet clear with the market volume, I think it would be more risk

I think you should diversify your portfolio better, you can invest a bit in BTC, a little on ETH, and NEO. That's the way to reduce your risk. Although the price of other atlcoins depends on the price of the BTC, the rate of increase and decrease of each altcoin is different, so holding more coins will reduce the serious downturn of the BTC.
This is an old topic and I wonder what could be your decision by that time its almost a year now, anyway I would like to give my stance regarding your questions.
If I were you I wont only focus in bitcoin, I have to consider altcoins because there are many coins that has potential not only btc, there are also eth, ltc, neo etc. Its better to diversify your investment since you are planning to invest $3k its a good capital actually to start with. Goodluck.

A question of a beginner, I read several articles that say better invest in bitcoin only (most of articles are from 2015-2016), but as bitcoin exceeds now $2500, I do not know if this rule still holds.
I want to invest a lot of money (let's say $3000), but I do not know if I have to invest only in bitcoin or other alcoins? What do you recommend?

It depends about your needs. If you can invest in long term coins bitcoin will give you the biggest profit, you can try with ethereum too.
If you want day trading the best option will be watching market as often as you can for choose the best option for you
Also depends on amount of money you have.If there is not a lot,you can get some alts that already did quite well before and solid project,but they dipped a lot cuzz of btc dancing so you can end up with some good profit.

don't just rely on bitcoin . try to be flexible and try to invest on some other altcoin it might help you in future . But i also prefer to ethereum, which is my second choice when it comes in investing to cryptocurrency. And for the OP, i would suggest you to divide of your money into two and just invest to bitcoin and etheruem, since this two is the only crypto which the most reliable and profitable that i trust.
Well, we can invest to any coins as long as it was belong to the top and reliable coins. It just happen that Bitcoin is the best and most trusted coin in the market that is why if we want a sure earnings then better to choose Bitcoin only but the price become more expensive that is why we could choose the Altcoins as it was cheaper than Bitcoin for an investments. I also investing in Ethereum because even is Bitcoin is that reliable still it is not good to put all of your eggs in just one basket because Bitcoin is not 100% that will guarantee earnings.
I usually spend 30% of the money invested in cryptocurrency to keep Bitcoin, the remaining 40% I use to invest ICO and the rest to invest in altcoin. For me Bitcoin is stable but the profit from bitcoin investment in this time is not high so I usually keep bitcoin as a form of saving instead of depositing into the bank.

nonsense. You buy only bitcoin since you don’t get to know another coins. At least get to know there is one more competitive coin called as Ethereum. Recently the founder of ETH on meeting pointed out the weak side of BTC. http://www.businessinsider.com/ethereum-founder-vital.. ETH is quite competitive, it’s wise to hold two or more coins at least to avoid risk.
It is weird when this topic was created almost a year ago and the OP who opened up this topic is still a newbie but anyways I will answer your question or topic based on my opinion. It would be best if you have some money to invest in to diversify your investment. Buy at least 3-5 coins including bitcoin, at least your investment does not only rely on one certain coin and would not drop down that much if you divided your money in many cryptocurrencies.
I always want to invest BTC but then the subcoins are more attractive. We always need to keep at 50% BTC our investment.
