altcoins with big market capital usually tends to be safer for investments than the ones with smaller market capital, even though some of them still have the chance of collapsing but I think ethereum is definitely safer than the other then it got followed by other coins like matic, meanwhile coins like BNB which is owned by company and have utility could actually repeats the same fate that ftt has caused, since decision of the company could affect the coin as a whole, so if you're asking whether investing in ethereum is safe, it's definitely safer for investments than the other coins.
Ethereum for many years stay second to bitcoin as the most valuable cryptocurrency so I feel safe holding and accumulating it as well. Since I started investing in crypto, there is no other coin that performed solidly in the top ranking. There was a time when Ripple and Ethereum were racing for second place. Now Ripple is only valued at 10% of Ethereum's worth. I always look at Ethereum and BNB as the second and third safest coins in crypto although far from bitcoin. And we might need to observe from here how Ethereum's POS shapes its future because that is the only thing that I felt doubtful about.
Ethereum is the second largest cryptocurrency by its market cap which makes it a really volatile investment. You can go for it if you're financially able and have a high risk tolerance otherwise you can consider other altcoins as it isn't such a good thing to limit yourself to only one particular altcoins whereas there are many others you can explore and invest in. I'd suggest CORE which essentially is the native token of core DAO; an L1 EVM compatible blockchain which ensures scalability, decentralization and security but nobody knows its exact price value at the moment. Miners of CORE like myself are banking on the hopes that it'll be talked about during the AMA between MEXCGlobal and CoreDAO on Feb 3 at 2:00 UTC. But the features of CORE makes it a good alt to look at.

even though I do agree that ethereum have smaller chance of ever overtaking bitcoin throne but if it's ranked based by capitalization then it could be said that ethereum and bitcoin could become a competition.the thing is that, they are indeed in different niche but we are comparing the market valuation of each these coins, so it's still apple to an apple comparation.
the opportunity to overtake Bitcoin I think will always be Ethereum but again it's not easy and if it does it doesn't look like it will be anytime soon,

Number 1 because of the price or its features? imo it lacks the features needed to be a main stay in cryptocurrencies. Btc has the best features and Monero probably has the next best because their features are for a different type of person that btc cannot offer. Everything that eth offers can be achieved with btc and will probably be in its shadow forever. Of course eth has unique features but I do not think they are a big enough difference to benefit people enough to keep it alive. Important features that offer value are much better then having something that has features just to be different. we don't know about the future, all we can do is speculate, and as for Ethereum, I think it will still be a good investment considering Ethereum has always been and is currently the number 1 altcoin. investing in ethereum is definitely safer than the other coin mainly because it's labeled as number 1 coin not for nothing, it's because it has the liquidity that you won't worry about withdrawing your investments, moreover it's safer than the other alts in general but of course this comes with disadvantage that is ethereum is already quite expensive enough that with smaller capital you would hardly score any meaningful increase in value.

But there is one thing that affects the demand for this project, this is because of the huge transaction fees that most traders and investors don't like it. However, despite the huge fee, I'd still see that ETH remains on top among other altcoins, and that is probably because the trust has built strong already. Ethereum has been known for its profitability and that it keeps the faith of investors, short-term or long-term.
I know that it is going to be what we deal with, but at the same time we are going to end up with lower gas fee that will cause less people to buy eth, or at least not buy as much eth. Back in the day high tx fee meant buying a lot of eth to pay for the gas, now not so much.
