I asked my girlfriend and she said: 'yes, status really is that hard'. But I say who cares, he's a noob.

It seems to be considered reasonable and proper...

Hmmpf.
I've done my 5 posts, and over 4.5 hours logged in.
Still do not seem to have moved out of newbie status...

The 4 hour requirement makes sense though. Should fly by for anyone truly interested in bitcoin.

I hate these damn post requirements. Also there's nothing interesting in the newbie section damnit.

No, but I find it irritating because the newbie threads aren't really what interest me. Of course noobs can always read the other threads, we just cannot make any comments. Getting the 10 posts is easy, but it is taking some time to get up to 4 hours. I'll admit I tried leaving the browser open and hoping the clock wouldn't stop, but it does stop rather quickly. I suppose it does have a purpose though, sort of like the speed limit and I don't like that much either.

I think it's a good way to keep spam low, especially on the non-newbie boards. Personally it doesn't bother me much, the logged in time is long past, just been lurking most of the time. Smiley

I could not figure out why I could not post after a registered a couple of weeks ago it was driving me crazy. So I went to re-register and read the info that I apparently ignored the first time. O well live and let learn

It's a minor annoyance, really.  But I've been reading the forums for years, it's too bad that time isn't useful somehow.  Wink

It

Edit
I was going to say: it causes pointless posts. I was going to use one post per word but it looks like I need to wait 5 minutes between posts. I was goint to do this to reach my 5 post threshold. I get that spam may be a problem, but this is a pain for new users. I'm not even that new, I've been lurking for a while, but it is my belief that if I have nothing useful to say then it's useful to say nothing. My first post here was about a technical question to do with the mtGox websocket API, but I got no replies, most likely because I wasn't posting somewhere people interested in that stuff read. I really don't want to have to make a bunch of meaningless posts, "Hey, BTC is teh bomb!" or somesuch. It's a waste of time for me, anyone who reads such pointless posts, and of the site's bandwidth. Perhaps I'll finally grow past my newbie status in another few months, but I refuse to jump through hoops for anyone, even you guys.

Grrrrrr!

Smiley

Lol:). It does cause some pointless posts, however when you look at it the other way you will have a maximum of five useless posts for each user and then you won't really have them as much anymore because there is really no advantage to people posting anymore. Five useless posts per user seems a lot better to me than people bot spamming posts by the dozens or more:)

Aye, waiting around for 4 hours is painful

Its interesting I've heard some people saying the waiting is the hard part and others saying that the five posts are the hard part. I would recommend just browsing and trying to learn more about bitcoins while being logged in in order to solve your waiting problem if the posts are easy for you.

For me it shows:
Total Time Spent Online:  40 minutes.

...and this is my very first post.
So you shouldn't have to have posted before it counts your online minutes.

HTH.

I just wanted to back this up, the exact same thing happened for me. I started posting rather quickly but this is true, if you lurk, you can make an account which are logged into and it is quite easy to just browse and have the time pass.

Personally "newbie status" prevented me from making several helpful posts in the past.  The threads weren't in the "newbie" section, and thus I wasn't allowed to post.  The problem with "newbie status" is that it relegates honest users to the kiddie pool.  It certainly has value in stopping spam posts, but I'm sure there are other ways to go about doing it.

Plus, if someone wanted to spam, they would have no trouble creating an account, waiting 4 hours, making 5 spam posts, and then proceeding on to spam the rest of the site.

Avatars aren't available if you've got newbie status?
I have this account for quite a while now, but I'm rather a long time lurker than a poster  Grin

I have to agree why rush getting out of newbie status , it just means you not looking to stick around long IMO.
and to just post 5 random posts is also a bit meaningless don't you think. I 'd much rather browse the site (not for 4 full hours straight though) and try and actually add some value
after all isn't that what community is about ?
