Yeah, how come?

Someone let the account out as soon as it was created. I have my suspicions, but as it was a joke, no need to be pointing fingers.

Would you take legal action if the result was you get 10-20 years in federal prison for money laundering ?

And then when you get out the IRS is going to want your ass for tax evasion.

Oh, not to worry, they'll just tack that on in the initial indictment.

I'm waiting for the Bitcoin venture which gets hit with RICO charges (I know money laundering is a predicate offence for RICO in the US).  I have no idea how big an operation needs to be before it attracts that kind of investigation, though.

If that is the case then let the life ruination begin. After all, there will be no justice served through the legal system right ?

Indeed. The idea is that with bitcoin, YOU control your money, not some government. So if shit goes wrong, it is YOUR fault. (not pirate's)

I don't mind gimmick accounts when they're amusing.

Agreed.

There are degrees to libertarianism, otherwise they'd just be anarchists. Using available legal means to enforce a contract is not contradictory.

True, but...
But it might not be enforceable, especially if the plaintiff has unclean hands (which people have asserted some of the PPT operators do).

How many people owed money by pirate are willing to risk legal action back-firing on them?

A contract is a contract, even if it does say 3300% interest.

And when it gets violated, suddenly all the regulators that you want nothing to do with bitcoin, should step in and help out? That is exactly the hypocrisy that I mean.
You want bitcoin to be anonymous, but not when you fall for some anonymous person's ponzi. You want bitcoin to be decentralized and unregulated, but not when you fall for an unregulated ponzi.

If you want authorities to help you: stay within their boundaries. In bitcoin, the idea is that you are able (but apparently you aren't) to handle your own shit. If you handle shit that you can't manage, then don't come drying when it hits the fan and disappears.

Goat,

You should setup a fund for legal action.

I imagine people on both sides of the fence ( clients and detractors of pirate ) would donate.
Justice in this case would  certainly deter people from doing this again in the future and help clean up the bitcoin world.

It's very interesting to what how all the so-called libertarians here usually shout the loudest about why bitcoin is so beautiful. It is not controlled by the big banks, by governments, it is total freedom, independent, etc etc.
But as soon as they get scammed due their own incredible stupidity, suddenly they talk about "official defaults", regulations to defaults, legal actions, etc. Face it. You joined a ponzi and lost a lot of money and there is NO regulation, law or government going to help you out. And that is how YOU wanted it YOURSELF, after all, that is what bitcoin is all about, right?

This whole debate about default, no default, and regulations is hypocrisy at its best. You gave your digital money to a digital guy and he digitally ran away with it. What the fuck else did you expect?

@ Pirateat40: If you ever read this, know that you have admirers. It's been a blast seeing so many people fall for it, and it is ever amazing to see how a community as a whole fails to learn from its mistakes over and over again.

Hmm. I self identify as "libertarian" (actually market anarchist, which is libertarianism taken to it's logical conclusion), and I was not taken in, nor do I expect Daddy Government to come save those who were.

If anyone wishes to seek dispute resolution outside of the court system, and you can get him to talk to you, my services are available. See my sig.

It may be 100% silly or ridiculous, but still has something.
VHS tapes got popular by porn.
CD got popular by porn.
Even internet became popular by porn.

But in Bitcoin, there is nothing to attract every one.
doing good thing wont get that much attraction.
Do bad or wrong or illegal things, then it will spread like a wild fire.
pirateat40 seems doing things in the way he want 100% perfectly.

This particular scam will attract many in the REAL world, not just this virtual world.
So if no news, then make news, get attraction & attention.
Bitcoin needs attention of everyone like torrents.
Common man needs to know what is Bitcoin, so that everyone use it.
