I just got beat up bad by my electric company!

I was running 300A with 125TH mining power on my 400A service at home.

The electric company called me in and want to put me on commercial rate which works out to be about $.13/KWh.

I shut 40 S5's down and the draw went to roughly 200A to eliminate any "equipment safety concerns".  I need to get rid of them.
I have to get rid of the rest of my s5's, another 40 of them in May.

That leaves me with a dozen s7's which I have to sell or get hosted elsewhere in July.

They are watching to see if I use more than the "average" customer in my area with my size home.  They said that should
be no more than 6679 KWh/month which I figure to be about a 9.27 amp continuous draw.

Basically, I am screwed.  At least I bought some time till the halving.  I never did tell them what I was doing, just lots of ''math'.

I hope none of you find yourself in the same situation.

Anyone want some S5's in the United States, make me an offer.  I also have the PSU's and power cables that went with them.

Seriously, you are a candidate for hosting your iron at a data center!  You may even find one that can beat your electrical rates!

Time to clean my glasses!  I went to look at the top of the page thinking that the block time might still say 13h.  I look here and see block found.  I go back and it really says 13m.  Pleasant surprise.

Thanks for pulling us out of that one Jays86.

any reason why not the s7?

it would be very hard for him to do to the s5/s7 that he did for s3 because the s5/s7 use a read only file system. so once you reboot it, it will get set back to stock Sad

Is this why I can't change the root ssh password? Chinese need their backdoors.

It wont be a backdoor unless you leave your router wide open as well. Still, passwd doesnt work?

Password works but only default. If you change the ssh password (which is a pre-req in my book) it just reverts back to "admin"

Yes - I am a networking/security professional so I build my own firewall, virtual servers... all open source.

Not Password to login. passwd, to change the password, worked for me. You probably know already, since you're a networking/security professional, but this is how to use passwd;

passwd root
newpass
newpassagain
http://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/changing-password-of-specific-account-in-linux-commandline/

This revert the password to admin?

yes it does.

What state do you live in?  Can't you just switch providers?  It doesn't make sense, if they allowed 400A connection to your house, you're allowed to use all of it.  Otherwise they will reject the connection to the transformer.  Most residential transformer doesn't even allow connecting 400AMP from 1 house as typically you will need 500MCM cable which is too big for their connector Bus Bar.  The work around is 6 smaller parallel cables.  That was the issue at my house.  Fortunately that transformer was overloaded and overdue to be upgraded so I got lucky and was able to hook up the 500MCM which is a FAT heavy Copper cable to the new transformer.  I had no issues driving most of the 400AMP at 80% which is 320AMP.    DMwardjr have similar configuration and was actually trying to go to 800AMP to 1000AMP for his house.  Just tell them you're running a lot of servers at your house.  Sounds like they're just trying to make more money from you.

I am in Indiana, and no, we do not have our pick of power companies like other areas do.

400A service minus 20% safety means 320A useable.  I was just under at 300A.
The meter is rated as 320 amp continuous load.

With the supply cables, I was running safely at 300 amp.

I actually had a 2nd similar meter installed on my property that I wanted to expand into.  It by my driveway.  It is live but not being used.

They put in a new transformer on my property that has plenty of capacity.

They put in newer smart meters but I don't think they are communicating because I am out in the country.

Because they can.  They called me into a meeting at their location.  I brought my electrician along.
You are a paying customer, you have a service with them, you are entitled to use that service as long as you pay for it.  You should have brought a lawyer, not an electrician.  They don't get to tell you what you can or can't do on your property, nor can they limit you to an arbitrary average value of those residents around you.  They are stupid to drive away a well paying customer.

we need to stop buying Bitmain gear. Vote with our dollars and force these bad actors to conform to what is right or we make them irrelevant.
I wish I did more research before buying my S7 - I didn't realize what a greedy company they were, mining empty blocks and all. Now I wish I had an Avalon 6 instead. Well, it least I won't mine there.
The reality is complete separation from antpool/bitmaintech is hard to do.
My next miner will be an Avalon mostly because they supported this pool with the contest plus everyone talks highly of the quality
These are exactly the reasons I just bought an Avalon 6 and not an S7, despite the S7 being just slightly more efficient.  I told myself I would never buy new asic gear, I started with a $20 S1, then graduated to a $100 S3+, both before I even really knew who Bitmain was.  I recently picked up an S5 for <$180, another good deal for the hardware, but buying used I didn't feel like I was directly supporting Bitmain.  I will run the S5 for a while still, I may bring the S3+ back but yea, it is tough to completely separate from Bitmain since they are so pervasive.  Once I saw how Avalon supports cgminer I made up my mind that they would get my money if/when I decided to buy a new, current generation miner, and they did.

Running it as a business, you simply can't beat the S7 as it's  priced to kill off the competitions.
It's unfortunate that the bottom line has to drive business decisions many times.  Even though the Avalon 6 is not as cost efficient as the S7 if it were my business I would do everything I could to put my money with Avalon; sometimes making the "right" decision is better than making the cheaper decision if your business model can support it.

Now the money is free, and so the people will be
Wow I've been away for a little while, and come back and check the forum....Damn all this Drama.  Seems Kano needs to go all out CSI on these rogue miners.  Although statistically he could ban me because my lone s7 has never found a block LOL

you would think 400A service you can use 400A.

if it were me i would keep them all running until they can provide documentation that proves you cant.

They did not want to give a straight answer to my most basic questions.

How much power am I allowed to use with my 400A service? and Where is this information published?

if possible strong arm them into letting you run all your machines and not increasing your rates. it they dont want to play ball switch power companies.  ive been looking around lately cus AEP basicly doubles my bill with their fees and "transmission" charges. im waiting for the day when they show up to try and increase my rates or call the cops thinking im growing.

I am curious...is the basic root cause of the problem simply bad hardware/firmware or is it something that could be seen as intentional?
There's 2 issues.
1) I can't tell what the hardware is, they use a proxy
2) It's almost certainly intentional since they've changed things around since I commented about it and they 'tried' to avoid being found.
Most of the accounts where created in Jan, then no changes for 1.5 months, then 11 switched to address accounts over the last 3 days.

how much hash power are we talking?

thats a great question considering how much ~25% is gone from this past weekend when we were peaking right before the long drought.

They had commercial meter people there ready to sign me up.  I basically said I had options and those
options would result loosing the sale of a lot electricity to me.  No way is it even feasible to go commercial rate
so I had nothing to loose.

how can they justify putting you on the higher rate if you arent running a business.

depending where you live tell them you are growing weed or have multiple tanning beds.

'The right to privacy matters'
the suspects must at least be readers of the thread since they are trying to hide who they are. just give up hiding and leave, kano will find you.

i say out the thieves and give them the ban hammer.

Cant ban them,  they use a proxy and mining with a btc address both can be changed, it sucks and I don't know why the would hang out and waist electricity.

Their IP(s) could be banned, however Kano has done the best thing and is withholding payment (pending blocks) which means little/no downside for the pool. They either start finding blocks and get paid, or now waste their time and electric by worthless mining. Either of which is ok with me, although I would prefer them to find blocks.
As for why they do it is because, they (did) get rewarded for providing work (that is like all of us mining here), however withholding found blocks doesn't hurt them as they got paid for their work regardless (albeit with less block rewards) and only served to hurt the pool overall.

Again kano has done the sensible and best approach for the pool, with a bit of extra work for him regarding payments. If they change their ways and bring in the blocks then great, if not then kano can let them waste their hash or perm ban them.

I would love to know the hash power amount they have.
Here is why.

on jan 23 we were at 104.22%

today we are at 105.85%

so in two months with these punks cheating we still went up   1.63%

so if they had 3ph of shit  we really whaled  to go up the 1.63%
