Real Madrid are sluggish in their pursuit to get closer to the top of the table. Since the start of the season they haven't sat at the top for a full week and it is limiting their chance of claiming back the top. As for Betis they were more determined to defend against Madrid than to win. 1 point was enough for Betis in that game against Madrid. I am thinking Anceloti is more concerned about the CL, maybe he might have seen that Xavi will be a big hinderance to him in all competitions in the Spanish league.

To strengthen Real Madrid position in current standings they must to get three points in that match, considering that their position is also not very good at the moment they are losing points to be closer with Barcelona there. I highly doubt that, I mean if we are talking about mathematical possibility then I agree that there is a "chance" of that happening, there is no denying that it is still mathematically possible. However lets be honest and say that Real is not winning this year, they have already taken the point difference high enough that it looks as unlikely as it gets.

Barcelona would need to go on a losing streak for something like this to happen, is it possible for Barcelona to lose 2 games in a row while Real winning them to make it closer and more believable? Sure, it is possible and has happened before but I do not see that happening this season, not when Barcelona has nothing else left.

Now this is indeed very difficult because after all 9 points are definitely difficult to catch as long as Barcelona's performance is still in a positive trend.
One of Madrid's available hopes is to watch Barcelona drop points over the course of a few games but given the conditions it's clear it won't be easy to see that especially Xavi is clearly going to be even more focused now that they have lost a place in the Europa League.
