There's no need to create a new rank, higher than legendary. If someone has not ranked up yet from Hero to Legendary, there's a little chance (or no chance at all) that in e.g. 1 year time any Hero (starting with the 500 merits, not the 1000) will become a legendary. Collecting 500 merits is a really time consuming activity nowdays 
I know there are exceptions, who earns ~10 merits daily, but they are only exceptions
Anyway, if this slows down the new spam account registration, then it was a necessary step, and time will tell what the results will be on the long run
It's supposed to be a slow process, and I might add, if there were to be a rank above legendary, I'd be more than happy to wait to earn enough merits. Easy to say, yeah. But I don't find forum rank to consume much headspace. It never did, even though I joked about having to wait so long to become legendary. It's mostly people who view bitcointalk as their bread and butter who have a problem waiting and making meritorious posts, and those are usually the shitposting brigade--in other words, the idiots the merit system was designed to stop. All is good in my neighborhood.

It'd be so nice if Theymos made a rank higher than legendary. Given enough time, everyone is going to achieve that rank and it won't mean anything. Congrats to all you peeps who made it this week.

Don't be such a pessimist. If you are a Newbie you can still become a Junior Member without any merit, and then with only 10 merits you can become a Member - that's feasible. After that, be happy to remain a Member for a year or two. As for higher ranks, don't underestimate the power of miracles
My bet is Elon Musk will make it to Mars before some current hero members make it to legendary.

You're almost at 1000 already. I was just thinking I got lucky to be Legendary right before the Merit system was introduced!Unless people go through your old posts to give points, it'll take quite some time to go from 500 to 1000.
I think it can take many years to raise 500 points of Merit with the new rules. Full Members have only 5 sMerit they can send, lower ranks have almost nothing. Legendary members rejoyce, with just a few exceptions there won't be other Legendary members for a long long time.

To become legendary now it is so much harder, I hope they decrease merit requirements for those guys that are close.
