I am not very much scared about taxing Cryptocurrencies, what I'm really scared is shutting them down as in China recently happened...
Dont be afraid when the government wants to turn off bitcoin as it happens in china. Actually, the government can never really close the bitcoin. Maybe to close some minning sites, the fauchet can. But can the government close the btc wallet account we have? Can't. As long as our btc wallet account is still active, we can still bitcoin transactions worldwide, because bitcoin transactions are not through the bank.

Does someone know if there is any regulation regarding ICOs?
I have the feeling it's like jungle for now.

Hello,

Remember what is considered a Security.

Now for legal reasons, don't consider this legal advise. Do get with an attorney.

These should be considered my opinions only because of ........

If the digital currency, token, or crypto or whatever you want to call it,

1) Is being backed by any commodity or asset.
2) If it is offering ownership in a company
3) If it represents a vote in the company
4) If the person or entity that acquires it is guaranteed a return on his or her investment.
5) If you use the word investment, that can upset regulators.
6) If you promise interest to the coinholders.

Good Luck

Well done Sir:

Also consider whether the purchaser is looking for passive income, which could just mean appreciation in value, or whether the purchaser is going to take an active role. If the purchaser is investing to obtain passive income it is more likely a security.

If it is a security then you have to be registered as such with the SEC and have their okay to go ahead. Not a small task.

There are exemptions to being a security. One of them is to have only accredited investors.

I am sure most of the token issued during ICOs are not registered wit the SEC or any other financial regulator, aren't they? So the protection for us willing to invest in such ICO is rather small.

Government will only accept the legitimacy of BTC if it can regulate at some level. But they have no clue how to do it now. Instead of waiting for some regulation coming out which may not make sense, crypto community is able to proactive shape the future regulation with government. Hong Kong and Taiwan government have create so called sandbox and let the startups experiment while government is watching. Those governments expect to learn from these experience and make some creative regulation.

I'm hoping for this thread to remain an index, mostly with just a brief summation and then links towards other threads and external sources -- rather than be where discussion for each index entry occurs.   Feel free to reply with a link to a relevant thread where further discussion occurs or to other related content

[Update Feb 19, 2014:

This thread is no longer being updated all that much. As Bitcoin further permeates the world, most every nation (or state, etc.) will have content specific to that jurisdiction's involvement with Bitcoin.   Feel free to continue posting as you wish, but this thread will no longer be even close to being a comprehensive list as it had been for a period of time.

This is similar to how the NEW Articles in the Press Forum thread serves as an index to media mentions.

They highlight the ways in which Bitcoin either defeats or bypasses methods of control that regulators enjoy through the banking-system. Shocked

Hi there, I am wondering if cryptocurrencies should be regulated, what's your opinion: yes or no? If so, should it be regulated as a security, a commodity or as something else?
