Well, we seem to be focusing a lot on the Top 10 coins in the market and perhaps forgetting the key factor of profitability.
- ETH is well deserved as the top long-term option, the most anticipated upgrade will be the end of the year or early 2021.
- Dot is maturing, the good news is that more and more new projects are found on the platform  of Dot.  As it becomes even more widespread, aggregate-enabled blockchain like complex would give a huge advantage in diversity to demand.
- In addition, Matic (Polygon) has increased by more than 240% since January.  Some of the big partners coming to Matic, it will continue to mature in value.
- A coin of considerable interest to me is Phore, a youthful, convenient blockchain that meets current needs, its upgrade has  come very close.  It shows a team that has an investment and will expand,  upgrade , the BSC on the 14th march. The $ 9 ATH price that Phore generates is no coincidence.  Good time to sprout it and wait for a big harvest in the new ATH.

If you ask what coins are good to invest in you will get a lot of input from many people, because everyone has different views in choosing investments, I personally prefer to invest in current defi products and are on the Binance network, such as uni, sfi and still many more, I do not have many of these assets, but I am sure these coins can go up to 50% from the current price

You gave him a great suggestion by saying Top 10 coins with billion dollars of marketcap. Smiley
As you can see he's looking for hidden gems, projects that have less than 500 million USD marketcap. Instead of that, you are suggesting these:

Binance Coin: 38.5 billion USD
Cardano: 41.4 billion USD
Chainlink: 11 billion USD
Polkadot: 31.7 billion USD

Among all the coins discussed here so far, I think DOT and BNB are the ones who have a strong market cap which shows that these projects are not just solid but also very popular among investors and traders alike which is important because a lot of good projects die in the long term as they suffocate in this crowded altcoin market and fail to make their space and find their identity.
It is highly likely people like to invest in coins that are popular and if that is not the situation BNB will not rally like it did and the reason everyone was citing was projects migrating to BSC and for that to happen when there are other platforms majority choose BNB because of the popularity of the coin because it is from a popular team.

I am not too sure but even TRX looks like a good option although I haven't seen much growth in the coin's price which again makes me wonder if it is worth holding and investing into it.
There are several coins that were well below a dollar and there was a huge rally in all of the small valuation coin and if there is a decent project with small valuation then i will invest again in the future hoping we will see those rallies.

Since you wanted a long-term investment, much better to choose the old one even the price is expensive as it was been proven and tested to have a sustainable market demand. Looking for new projects, that will be of higher risk ever. You can't get assurance from them and you are not sure that the developers will be taking care of it years from now. Many new projects turn dead and that seems possible.

If I were you, I still choose ETH, BNB, and of course Bitcoin.

Its talk about to speculation within the showcase for a long-run hold, my best approach is staying to the more well known cryptocurrency. Its true that much more can be made with altcoin whose group are exceptionally persevering and seem develop significantly within the close future, but I do have a moo chance appetite and lean toward venture in venture that have a trace measure of victory and has been within the advertise for a whereas.

ETH is the subsequent significant coin and a great many people incline toward putting resources into this coin. ETH cost is right now 1.5k, if BTC keeps cost expanding, ETH won't stop. As you most likely are aware ETH is affected by the BTC development. On the off chance that you are searching for a drawn out speculation project, ETH is the most ideal decision, l concur with that. Top altcoins have consistently been generally mainstream about long haul venture. In fact there are different ventures which can be effective later on.
It is not only ETH that's affected by bitcoin but every altcoin in the market is. And even if you suggest to OP that he should be holding ETH, that wouldn't be acceptable to him.
He's looking for projects or coins that have a lesser market cap as it's said on his title. Most of the top altcoins are more than $500M in market cap and they're billions in MC.

A good project that's for long-term investment will usually have tons of investors making their marketcap billions. A hundred list down in CMC seems to have these qualities without Bullrun though they are still going to be considered garbage. See them crumbles when the bear market starts and then lost in the ranks but the top altcoins no matter the kind of market stays on top.

Indeed new altcoins are not the best variant for long-term investment, if we are looking for projects for the long term, we should focus on top altcoins. l think they have more potential than others. As you above mentioned BTC and ETH are really the best options. ETH price is still high, but l think it will not stay at 1.5k. ETH will start price increasing in the future. We can make good money from ETH investment. l think l don't need to talk about BTC because BTC is the best.
There are pros and cons sometimes in even choosing altcoins in the top.
It's all about missing the opportunity and possible potential, but from how the top coins just stood their ground almost for many years, I don't think there's still a reason to invest to lower ranking coins anyway.
Anyways, still ETH for me in the end.

If it's new altcoins you talking about sorry I'm not ready to recommend them to any newbie because they have uncertain future, it's better to prepare for short term holding only, for long term holding bitcoin and ethereum and few other old altcoins are the best option

There are too many projects that will increase their value long time but since you want coins that have marketcap under 500 million dollar I would suggest some of these gems:

KCS: Kucoin Shares is in Kucoin exchange platform just like BNB to Binance exchange. It offers reducing trading fees and such. It has too much potential, it's only 405 million dollar marketcap and price is $4.70 for now.

DAO: Daomaker project's token, currently have 64 million dollar marketcap and price is $3.80. You have to hold coins to participate projects on Daomaker.

JULD: Julswap project is another platform in Binance Smart Chain. Similar platforms have taken off already such as Pancakeswap. Julswap have only 62 million dollar marketcap and price is $0.30 now.

It has become their respective thoughts and maybe some people will try to invest in altcoins that have a good view for the long term and also many factors that can be taken from it such as altcoins that are popular and have been around for quite a long time believe that these coins will continue to exist with btc for the foreseeable future even in the long term.
It is quite easy to find altcoins that would make a profit but it is a very difficult thing to handle when we are in a situation where we are after super high numbers, we would like to make a profit in a situation where people chase 10x and that is the reason why we should be scared because when we chase 10x we may get scammed while others go buy BNB or something and make 2x profit. I personally like to invest into things like BTC, ETH, BNB, ADA, DOT, LTC and so forth because that is what makes me feel better and that is what I feel comfortable with.

Otherwise I feel like I am investing into something very dangerous and that is why I always keep looking at the price of it constantly without a break, I remember days when I checked the price like every 5 minutes and made my wife crazy about it, hence why I think it is going to be quite easy choice to put all my coins into trustworthy ones.

for older projects of course there are good options on the market and you can choose your own.
but for new projects with good development, you can see AME, CATT, ARCS, FRM, and CTSI. I like this project. but if you are interested I hope you understand how the risk of investing in a new project.
I heard about AME and CTSI project and it's looks promising I don't know yet the rest of them. Yes, you're right it's very risky to invest with the new project but these projects have been launch in the market but I don't think how long will they survive in the crypto world. Everyday new projects are being build and develop to compete to the current projects and as you can see they improve some of the other aspects of the projects so they are the one who can attract new investors. I suggest go for long term like ADA and THETA.

I agree with you. since not so much growth is happening there is the potential for TRX to have a much bigger pump in the long run.
for the long term, I have also tried to see very cheap assets on the market and there was a pump on the stock exchange, namely AOA. Current market movements look bad, even like Dogecoin before the pump happened. but I saw how the pump ever happened to this asset.

still on top coinmarketcap like btc, eth, bnb, dot, there (based on current ranking)
maybe it will change in the future but they will not be too far behind if indeed one of the coins has a high increase.
