I think if we want an investment that is truly safe in the long run. That is the best choice. Because these two coins form the basis of the whole market. Both of these coins went up. So I believe in Bitcoin and Ethereum until now.

If you have more money and unused I suggest investing in bitcoin and ethereum alone because these two coins are going to keep the current crypto market lead is a great time to buy and save up to the price you want to take it off. My bet is Ubex. One of the best ICO in 2018 and definitley worth of long term holding

EOS is the top coin to hold for 2019! crypto prices currently have decreased, so many ideas for us can choose to invest in a long period of time, such as altcoin Ethereum NEO EOS and others, so maybe this is our chance to be able to save and buy as much as we can want.
now it is possible to buy many good coins at low price such as XEM, ETH, ONT, ADA and it is a lot of others. but nobody can promise that the price won't go even below

I think that Eth is suitable for short-term investments. If we talk about what to buy now and save a long time, I prefer bitcoin. It depends on how much you will invest, if you have more money then bitcoin, and if you have less money i prefer ethereum cause you will hodl it for long term, and there's a big chance for big profit if you invest close to the price today.
Major crypto project is the still most reliable for long-term investment. 0x, BTC, XMR, ETH, LTC, is what I am talking. But it actually depend on how long will you hols the coin. You might also want to consider some od the undervalued coin like ADA, NEO.
for long-term investing, you should invest in bitcoin yourself because I myself also believe that bitcoin will always increase in the next year but if you prefer to invest in altcoin, you have to look at coinmarketcap and choose the best coin in rank 10 and do the analysis first to make the coin you choose. Do not regret it in the end.
ICON Icx are the better option for long term
Surely Bitcoin and Ethereum is the right choice in my opinion, these two are both perfect for a long term investment and its been proven throughout the years of cryptocurrency, I'm pretty sure you won't regret investing in either of the two. Though like most of the comments here, you can venture in altcoins for a better profit, though the risk is much higher, just make sure that you'll do tons of research about the coin of your choice before buying in.

the right choice is right now if you want to invest in bitcoin or ethereum because the price is experiencing a considerable decline. we can see from its growth at the end of the year yesterday the market experienced a significant increase, most likely at the end of this year it will be repeated again. do not waste the opportunity now where the price of the two coins is still at a low level, the profit that I will get is quite large at the end of the year.
