Well I added about a 10 hour rental at 200 TH to try and bust up this block. Alas, no luck - it just finished and we're still in the block doldrums. Oh well, the hangover was worth it!

BTW, I can't help but notice that this whole "home/hobby miner" and the "small business miner" industry reminds of of the earlier days of Internet providers. Back in 1999 I became interested in Bulletin Board Systems (AOL being the largest commercial one at the time) and there were lots a small BBS systems that guys were running out of their homes and making a few bucks. So I bought some equipment and software and started my own local BBS with local content, etc. it quickly became clear that I had to offer Internet access too. So I brought in a fractional T1 from a whole Internet provider and a fiber optic line from Verizon, started selling unlimited internet for $14.95 month. This was before cable modems, satellite, etc. I was using 28.8 modems and the new "fast" 56kb modems cam out, so I upgraded my equipment and kept going. I built the business to about 200 customers and was starting to turn a small monthly profit, but illness in the family forced me to shut everything down (sent my customers to another local provider - didn't even have time to sell). well in retrospect, there is no way I could stayed in business anyway, because once cable and other high speed internet came along, all the small guys went out of business - they just couldn't compete with the big guys.

This is what I'm seeing in btc mining. Big guys with millions of $$ are squeezing out the small guys. Who can compete with the likes of a BitFury data center? I hope I'm wrong, because the small guys are what keep the network healthy and widely distributed.

I apolgize if this is off topic or wrong forum for this discussion, but I just wanted to share that experience with the group.

Ok, back to cracking that stubborn block!

This is not a long term game as all the vendors selling you stuff are also mining which means they're also your biggest competitors.  Do you really think they will give you the best stuff right away if they can also make money mining at lower difficulties first?
It's like the GOLD rush, hit it fast but don't expect it to last forever.  Whether you're doing this as a hobby or for fun, invest only what you can afford to lose.

So, I mentioned last week I was gonna sell my S7 on eBay bc my elec costs are too high (still making couple bucks/day but worried about the upcoming having). I was hoping to get $700 (less the eBay & PayPal fees), so I'm happy it sold yesterday for $825. (Waiting for payment, so jury is still out on how this is gonna end - it's a longtime buyer with good reviews, so I'm hopeful).

I'm still mining here (my miner is johnboy21) until I get paid, so here's hoping we can break this logjam before I disconnect. Gonna go make a chicken omelate for breakfast  Wink

That is good news with new S7s selling at $665!  Even after fees and shipping you should be where you were hoping to be.
Yes, I'm pleased with the result. I received the miner on Jan 22 and started mining that evening. I paid $1100 at the time, but Bitmain keeps dropping their price with every batch, so I'm wondering if they are just trying to get rid of inventory as they get ready to release a new version? Anyway, I earned about .8 btc with it, so didn't quite break even after subtracting elec cost, but I've had fun and I've certainly spent more on other entertainment (heck, a nice dinner out cost me more and only lasts a couple hours).

I'm hoping to get back into mining after the halving if the numbers work and if I do I'll look into some of the hosting solutions that others here have mentioned. This is a great pool and great bunch of guys!

I wonder if we are under a block withholding attack from rentals
That would really suck
I have had 200th rented for a month 24/7 with no block
140th of iron has had two blocks in the same period.
On 2/6 slush says they "detected" a block withholding from ONE miner and had the miner fix it.
Really? One miner?
How do you detect other than statistically?

BTCC six out of eight. And the last six in 27 minutes. Come one now. Get us back in the game.

75% of all hashing power over last 24 hours coming out of china big three. How do we compete. Did anyone notice the jump in BTCCs hashrate

Having some more linode network problems - yeah that's nothing new Tongue
People mining to DE will have seen 2 failovers, but reconnected straight away on the next attempt, at 9:42 UTC and 10:07 UTC
Each time the connection has come back within a minute, so after a failover you will have reconnected on the next try.
