It is really hard nowadays to distinguish whether an ICO is a scam or not. Yes, you can do your own research, check the dev team who's creating it and check their white paper but all of those can be faked especially now that we have the technology to do it. Investing in an ICO puts you in a huge risk and the thing that you can only do is just put your money that you are willing to lose. You can pray that the ICO that you will choose will not with your money but it is still 50/50. That's the nature of cryptocurrency. You just have to deal with it and be prepared for the worst.

There're more and more coins popping up, and before you start to invest certain coin, you should try to find their whitepaper, road map, dev team, and do they have some special or unique feature... try to invest those coins with hot community,big number of participants is a plus,and do they have a plan to exchange on a famous site?

First and foremost what you should see is their team. Look at the list of teams that will start a project, make sure they are really professionals in the field and not just "willing" people to be their team. And the second is to look at the purpose of the project, if the project is in sense of having an unreasonable purpose and has a suspicious fund allocation, it is a suspicious project and you should avoid it. Trust only those ICOs which are operating over the trusted exchange ( not link at trusted site and go at anothrr and buy there because recent example of the bitrex mailing server of fake announcement of ICO of coin which was not legit but link was redirecting at anither place , so make direct buy sell of tocket at the exchange only .

It's true that many ICO are heading up now a days and it becomes difficult to choose one which is most trustable and of course profitable as well. But there is good way to understand this with the help of ANN discussion. Read carefully what other forum users are saying about an ICO and you can also checkout their projects progress to understand how trustable they could be in the future. Still difficult but it will reduce most of the efforts.
