Due diligence is key. Make sure the developers are legit, search them on google and see what comes up.
Ask yourself, does this coin really have a purpose or could the system they propose work without the coin?

Indeed, there are just so many altcoin projects right now offering ICOs. Many of these might just be scams. The others may not be but they might just end up a legit project that lacks the passion to move forward after ICO. So, what to do? Try to analyze their vision and objectives. Go to their website and whitepaper and understand the main points. Do some background checking as well with the team members.
It is not easy to trust ICOs specially if you do not know the real identity/background of the dev. White papers are not so reliable in my opinion that is why you must only invest what you are willing to lose IF the ICO runs away.
However, these are high risk but high rewards coins if ever you would get some.

Research google about what you want to invest in coins, make sure that you invest is you can afford to lose it, we all do not want to lose money but this is risky so you have to gamble your money. so invest you can get lost. just in case the coin is not success.
Go into it with the mindset that 95% of ico's are scams, you can see clear warning signs on most of em.

I've invested in quite a lot of ICO's recently and until now I've had only 1 that turned out to be a scam. Don't jump on every hype-train and do your research. Join the slack, read their blogs and Whitepaper. If you've got questions, you ask them to the team.

It's not a good option to decide ico is a scam based on fast updates. Why? because every ico starter will update as fast as they can, they realize about this.
Maybe other option is look into their profile team, advisor, roadmap, are their project achievable or not, and what plan to achieve their goals

That's a really difficult question, no one can judge a project could be trusted or could be successful .As you know , too many kinds of scam icos.What I can tell you is how I choose a bounty to participate.
A good idea to solve real prolem, better has a alpha version.
A good developing team .

- first, if it looks too good to be true (gigantic return), then it's probably not true.
- i always check bitcointalk to see if other interested people can find any dirt in the sky.
- base control: does the team really exist (google/linkedin)? is there an escrow? do i understand the technique or the whitepaper of the project? if i have any doubts about one these three questions, it's a no go.
