I am not aware that what Matthew did was criminal. IANAL, but it seems it is the people that made bets with him that included consideration that may be breaking some gambling laws somewhere. Matthew did no such thing.

I have no problem with the Scammer - even though I don't really believe his failure to pay on a bet meets the definition of a "scam" - tag being applied to Matthew because he agreed to that in advance.  I have a huge problem with the fact that Matthew was given the tag within hours while the Bitcoinica guys still don't have scammer tags after many months.
Historically, I think the fastest way of getting a scammer tag was to admit that you were scamming someone. Matthew N Wright managed to do that in theatrical style with the attention of a large chunk of the forum upon him, and theymos himself was amongst those scammed. If anything it's surprising that it took that long.

its over man, MWN can't say or do anything anymore, no one will ever trust him.

People still trust Intersango in spite of Bitcoinica and they still trust GPUMax in spite of BS&T.  Matthew will suffer more only because he's not running another service which taps into people's greed.

I think this is different because he took much of the steam off of pirateat40 and exponentially put it on to himself in this matter.

Pirate and Matthew both aren't going to pay.

Has there been any word from him?  Anywhere? Or pirate? Is there a difference?

edit:

and why are people defending this guy?  At the moment I have no opion, just curious.
That is a good question. I am giving him the benefit of a doubt if he will stop trolling here. I think he is an over-privileged brat that bit off more than he can chew, but that doesn't make him a scoundrel.

remember this?

answered my own question, just click his name and see last posts

Quote from MNW:

Thanks to everyone who participated in this bet. It was a great social experiment for me to find out who my true friends were, and also to entertain the community (which is my true purpose on these forums and always will be). Unfortunately, it looks like I lost the bet. This means I'll need to pay out exactly as described in my original thread OP.

Many of the people betting were very careful to point out that others were ignorant and foolish to invest their money into Pirate without doing due diligence beforehand, so far as to call them shills, suckers, etc. This leads me to believe that the individuals betting in my bet are very wise with their money and would only bet if they carefully read and understood the rules of the bet. For this reason, I am confident that the very wise individuals betting in this thread will be satisfied with the very literal interpretation of my thread.

I will begin paying for my losses as outlined in the following rule:

Quote from: Matthew N. Wright on August 19, 2012, 03:49:20 PM

If I lose the bet, you get 20BTC sent to that address (13dSK4663Ts7j2PwHS1eUVjycKLBwx7PJM). If you lose, you'll need to send 20BTC to my address.

I'll begin processing the payouts for each of the 112 betters in this spreadsheet immediately: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0Ajtx05YrHtIydFVHcGxLOExTbnhqajJLZmlSZUNtM3c&pli=1#gid=0

Please make sure to following along for your own record keeping purposes. I will update this thread with each payment as well. Thanks again!

You can literally take away few million $ and stay good, in the same time you can promise to give away almost $900k and in the end not fulfil promise and get scammer tag within 10 minutes. Grin

No funds changed hands.
That is false. Lots of funds changed hands, just not with Matthew.

Say I promise to buy 1,000 pounds of shrimp from you on a particular date at $10/pound. You turn down other deals on that same day. You take out a loan to buy the shrimp. You buy the shrimp. You rent a truck to deliver the shrimp to me. Then when you get there, I say "Sorry, I don't want the shrimp." But you gave up other jobs, took out a loan, bought 1,000 pounds of shrimp and rented a truck. How can I say "No funds changed hands"?

yes i see your point, I guess the fact that no one will ever take any thing he says or does seriously is punishment enoght.

Its really to fucking bad. MWN is hard working and talented. its to bad trolling on a massive scale is his favorite pass time.

MATTHEW N. WRIGHT - The Best Bitcoin Troll Ever!

 Cheesy

yes, exactly.   Grin

no reasonable person would have any rational belief or expectation that his farcical bet was real.

hooray for our new, greatly expanded definition of scammer, which has been diluted sufficiently to include obvious trolls (especially  in cases of wildly successful trolling)!

now we are all safer from the dangers of obvious troll bets, thanks to words meaning whatever we want them to.

I guess all trolling is a kind of scam now, because it involves kidding, which is dishonest.   Roll Eyes

Talking about scammers... shouldn't pirateat40 have one of those SCAMMER tags already?

I confirm I didn't get paid nor had any kind of communication trying to make a deal about repayment coming from him for the last 3 weeks.

He already has the scammer tag. Didn't you notice?

Hadn't checked his profile, and given that he's not posting I hadn't noticed it.
Good, good. Thanks for doing the digging for me Tongue
