I'm not in charge of scammer tags, I'm just saying making up hypothetical situations and expecting a serious answer is kinda dumb.

I'm simply asking for bitcointalk.org's definition of a scammer.  It's a legitimate question.  If that doesn't exist that's fine.  Maybe we should wait for Theymos to weight in, if he chooses to do so.

Thx.

Matthew didn't take any money, but I believe others have received scammer tags preemptively. so SCAMMER sometimes means ALMOST SCAMMER.

One problem with the bet scenario is that nobody would have really known what to do were Matthew to win the bet. Matthew wouldn't have gotten the scammer tag, but he would have been just as guilty.

I agree with this... People are going overboard... I sorta knew it was a joke from the start.....

Sorry but no they are not over-reacting.  I was ready to pay out if I lost.  And yes, he would have took my BTC.  I also bought pirate debt because of this bet, debt I wouldn't have bought if this bet didn't exist.  I fully expected Matthew to pay.  I am out BTC because of his actions.  Also, people didn't sell their pirate debt because of this bet.  People have lost money here because of Matthew.  They have every right to be as pissed as they are.

He's a scamming fuck.

I don't care if he gets a scammer tag or not. I think we need a gullible and/or complicit in crime tag for the ppt folks who assisted in the theft. And a clever crook tag for those who actually made money on the pirate fiasco (for the record, I made a little over BTC2...which I'm willing to return).

How can it be argued that taking almost 1 million $ in bets without any initial intention to pay in case of a loss is not scamming ?

Sorry but all those people, matthew, amir, patrick, donald, pirate etc. are giving an awful image of bitcoin and the facts that these behavior are semi tolerated is awful as well.

Bitcoin needs one things it is trust and some form of regulation.

So the scammer tag is speculative, not clearly defined and assigned on a case by case basis.

Right.

Thank you.

scam (plural scams)
Fraudulent deal.
That marketing scheme looks like a scam to me.

fraudulent (comparative more fraudulent, superlative most fraudulent)
dishonest; based on fraud or deception
false; phony
He tried to pass a fraudulent check.

Can anyone here argue that matthew did not try to be deceptive ? (and thats the best possible case)

Good point DarkEmi

Do those users you mention have scammer tags?  I guess they didn't ask for one.

Ok,

So he was labeled a scammer not because he didn't pay his, but because he asked to be labeled a scammer.

So if someone makes a bet, then doesn't pay, but DOES NOT ask to be labeled a scammer, will that person also get a scammer tag?

It is a question that has not been answered in spite of all the responses inciting FUD.

You're not gonna get answers based on hypothetical situations with no information provided, sorry.

Thanks BadBear

Theymos,

Can we get a clarification on the Scammer tag. Mathew N Wright may have welched on his bet but did he actually scam any one.  Is Mathew N Wright actually in possession of any of the funds from the bets?   If not I would think he can be labeled a welcher, but not a scammer.    A little clarification would be appreciated.

Thanks.

it was one of the conditions of his bet:

Anyone (including myself) who renigs on their bets will be labeled a scammer on the forums. Theymos will retain the IP addresses of everyone who has committed here and as you are marked a scammer for not paying, you will also be reported to the bitcoin police and tracked

So he's getting reported to the bitcoin police then?

Probably.

I think that means he is going to bitcoin jail...which is just like real jail, except its filled with pasty, white, libertarian nerds slapfighting over pictures of Ayn Rand.
